  • Good find.
    Was $199
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://…

Though a bit out-dated display, looks like it was released Jan 2014, but with all day battery.

    • Not sure what you mean about the display this is the 64GB SSD version http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NT.L31AA.011
Almost all reviewers complimented the IPS diisplay, battery life and quality, bagged the speakers, bloatware and limited storgae (although I believe there's a microSD slot)

      • MSY are selling the 32GB version actually (confirmed by way of purchase). Everything else is correct however.

  • +1

    1,280 x 800 IPS

    ok memory and nvram

not the most horrible thing out there and passable especially for an acer

  • +3

Good price. Would buy this if it was a 10 incher.

    • thats what my old lady said

      bazinga

it has a single micro usb… i suppose with a kbd and mouse it could be a passable mini laptop thingo

windows 8.1 is dreadful as a touch device

      • It also charges micro USB. I recalled somebody posting some kind of accessory that allowed one to both charge the device and use USB at the same time. Not sure where it's called now..

      • Free update to Win 10…

        • -5

it is OEM key, can't upgrade.

        • @someonefromwww: All Windows 8 devices (that meets the spec requirements) are eligible for upgrade (albeit to different edition). Since I've seen something like Vivotab Note 8 being eligible, I think this one is more than likely be eligible.

        • @AznMitch: asking my best mate "google" now. thanks

        • @someonefromwww: My best mates HP Stream 8, and Surface Pro 2 current both running Win10 says it was a free update ;)

        • @wasabinator: My mate Gatesy says this is definitely eligible, look for the 'Get Windows 10' icon on your task bar.

        • Not sure if we need to wait for the icon to appear. I have updated my old W3-810 yesterday by download the app from MS (32 bit) and install using "upgrade this PC" and remove everything including setting option during the process. The MS link is here:
          https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The old W3-810 took about an hour to download and upgrade the OS from W8.1 to W10 Home. Remember to backup everything from your tablet and plug in AC adaptor before you upgrade.

Windows 10 seems a very forgiving OS. It can run very well with old hardware like W3. After upgrade I have around 7G left in the internal drive.

      • I have done exactly what you said with my dell venue pro 8 inch.

Otg cable and wireless mouse and BT keyboard.
It's a nice small form factor which is easily transportable.

      • "thats what my old lady said"

Was that an incest joke? :D

Specs for 64GB version. Otherwise pretty much the same?. Looks like close to 5000mah battery.

Value? Depends if you prefer this over Chiwu HI8,Vi8 & Cube chinese tablets for around same price from Gearbest/Geekbuy etc….

    • +3

Acer….at least there's Oz warranty with no expensive offshore postage.
A quick check of Acer support and most files are mid-late 2014, so suspect it was released in Oz that timeframe.
Also noted they have a new BIOS avail.. for Win10
Manual confirms config. includes 2Mp front & 5Mp rear cameras, light sensor, microHDMI, microSD and what a surprise (at least to some IT journos) no GPS. I'[m yet to find a 7"/8" Windows 8/8.1 tablet with a GPS.

      • yeah GPS seems to be std. on android ones but it seems windows users dont need maps?

        • You're right of course, that's why we had an Android tablet while we travelled through the UK and France!
Even now I find myself looking at the ever more affordable (decent?0 Win 8/8.1 tablets and thinh 'can I really get gy without a gps?'
The naswer of course is, it depends on who's going to use it…I'd need a GPS as I tend to do the serious driving stints.
My wife uses a tablet for media consumption, email on trips, take to work for reference.

      • -1

        My Toshiba Encore has GPS.

        • Yes, we know they exist. However the vast majority and certainly the more affordable ones don't.
When I buy a tablet for use in the car while travelling it has to be sub-$100 so that should something happen to it, it won't be a real pain in the arse.

  • I believe that it even comes with the office 365 for a year.
Are they any good? Only need it to read PDF's

    • have read its a bit heavy.

  • i'd go a dual boot Chuwi Vi8 with hdmi and better cpu, or a Hi8 with a 1080p res over this. good value Australian non chinese tablet though!

    • +1

acer has hdmi i think. will also run full minecraft.

      • +3

Does it have minecraft screen resolution?

      • not sure what minecraft has anything to do with it, the chuwi's will run full minecraft too

      • Chuwi Vi8 has a hdmi port too. It is significantly lighter as well(250g vs 450g), but I guess this is because of the battery. Chuwi only holds about 4~5 hours, but it seems Acer can hold upto 10 hours.

    • The question is how does the battery perform on those Chinese tablets?

Edit: I just read the review, it's quite good. Battery on the Chuwi is 5-6h normal web browsing.

  • How is this compare to Acer W3-810?

    • That tablet is a year older than this, released in 2013 and was Acer's first crack at an 8" Windows tablet. Suffice to say, it is under-powered and not very good value. Screen was very grainy too.

It was on a BOGOF special last year. And according to Tonyzx it was a steaming pile of…

      • +1

        typical of how acer works

release a tablet at $249 every year, no one buys it

ends up being $99 at msy… still people are undecided

kind of unlike my experience with the nexus 7 2… bought one, would buy another if i could but cant

        • that mean it did not fit the market well, or the marketing department not working on the right track.

  • -8

It's a good price, tempting, but that CPU is terrible. Can it even run a 1080p video without lagging? I'm not even sure. I'll probably wait a few years for some more decent Windows tablets to hit dirt cheap price

    • +1

I have no idea if the CPU can do it alone, but it handles 1080p easily as any good video player these days are hardware accelerated.

    • +3

"Baytrail Atom can do 1080p H.265 in software at 35% load."

      • For real? That's pretty cool if true.

And 2 gig of ram, thing sounds plenty good for a magnitude of tasks. Has hdmi out and Bluetooth I assume?

      • Good to hear! I have been burnt by Atom before. Maybe wait for Cherry Trails to get cheap though.

        • What about Proton Trails? Cheaper again….if that follows then Neutron Trail should be free

        • +2

I doubt you will find anything cheaper anytime soon (Intel did pour money onto Baytrail tablets for them to be used by more manufacturers). Intel already has lost tonnes of money on the mobile market because of the subsidies and I think Intel started to reduce the subsidies on Atom…

Baytrail is not that far off from Cherry trail I think. I've looked at the benchmark comparisons between those two and while GPU have improved heaps, CPU have not improved that much. I persaonlly don't think the difference warrants the price tag Cherry trail's at, though that's my opinion.

      • Except that this tablet is 1,280 x 800 IPS

  • Is this a good buy? Im looking for a tablet for my kids to play with.

    • +6

Windows is not a good OS for kids to play with. Is good for professionals.

      • Lol "professionals".

    • +5

      Completely agree with PainToad,
For Kids - iPad, that's what it is made for.

    • -1

Think of it this way. Think of a laptop, take the keyboard off, and add touchscreen. Would your kids be able to use something like that easily?
The app market is fairly empty, so you'd end up sticking to desktop programs as well.

    • +4

Depends on your kid. My 5 year old is fluent with Windows 8.1 tablet and use Word and PowerPoint for his Kindy school work. I know some kids in the same class can't do the same. But it's all about training, they can learn if you are willing to spend some time to teach.

      • +1

goraygo, do you mind telling which school it is. My 5 year old has nothing to do with Word and PowerPoint in kindy in the primary school.

        • I am in NSW, kid is in one of the top 4 public school by result. It's purely luck as when we move here, we didn't know anything about schools (we were single back then) and the school turned out to be a good school.

They are also using iPad at school to do book creator thing but in Kindy, they don't write heaps.

        • +1

@goraygo: thanks gorayho, my kids are in ACT public school and they only do play learning. No use of word or pp or iPads other than Mathelatics and Reading eggs apps.

        • @akd: you can teach the kids. :) I am a self renounced geek. So my kids are to live up that expectation. Lol. Only when they are interested of course.

      • +1

Geez PPT at 5yo? What presentations do they do?

        • Just simple stuffs like taking a photo and describe what it is according to the topic at hand. Very simple ppt.

    • Depends on the kid. At four I'd load LSL on my uncle's PC then bug family about pop culture to pass the age filter…

  • can these be used decently with a stylus? Seems like something I could use to take notes at uni.

    • +7

Just use a pencil and paper and save $100..

      • +5

Just quit uni. You'll save heaps by not having to buy books. This logic is pozu approved.

      • It does have benefits, though whether you want to spend that much is up to you.

i.e. eBooks can be annotated without printing (if you have a lot of courses with textbooks, the weight of the textbooks alone can be overwhelming), PDF annotation means that you can use your lecture notes with annotations in any of the smart devices you own, given that you use dropbox or something similar. Since it's saved in PDF, you can reproduce the notes and share it with others without photocopying.

If you use a Windows tablet, it doubles as a laptop as well.

Of course, you could print, but printed notes do take up space as well (whereas tablets, every notes you've produced are contained rather nicely). I am not going to go into saving environment with less papers blah argument though, because I feel like that's making excuses for buying the tablet.

      • I'm sure there's a break even point somewhere after you go through many reams of paper…

        • The tablet will more than likely die before that though. Wacom pens do require replacing the tip once in awhile (I've heard that's the case for n-trig pens as well).

    • +6

Grab something that has an active stylus support (i.e. Galaxy note tablet, Asus Vivotab Note 8, Surface 3 etc etc). Palm rejection and pressure sensitivity means a lot for note taking. I'd personally recommend something that has larger screen though.

  • +1

Can this be updated to Windows 10?

    • If assume so but good question anyone confirm?

      • +3

Yep, I've got an Asus VivoTab note 8 with identical specifications and it got the Windows 10 update. Runs flawlessly. Had to install graphics drivers though but that's simple.

    • +4

Yes. I'm running Windows 10 on mine right now.

      • how do you upgrade. it comes with OEM key and telling me that I can't upgrade.

        • I didn't upgrade actually; I did a fresh install using a [32bit — didn't want any possible Acer driver issues] ISO that was initiated from within Windows itself. I did it earlier this month while Windows 10 was still in its technical preview phase. As of now I am running the official build (as a consequence of incoming updates of course), properly activated, and have opted out of insider builds.

If you're going about it in a different way I'm probably not the best person to ask for help. Sorry.

Apparently, it can handle 1080p hi10p video. Tempted to buy one and use it as a media player since it's cheap and it'll use very little power.

  • +1

    Rt or full windows?

    • +3

Full Windows 8.1 with upgrade to 10.

  • -6

    Can this run OSX?

    • +5

      Or MS-DOS 6.22?

      • how about CPM?

        • Surprised no one's asked about Linux.

        • +1

@gokhanh: I guess I need to explain for the younguns. Waaaay back before Linux, IOS, Windows, OS/2, DOS with windows overlay even before DOS, there was an OS called CP/M.
It's what the original DOS that Billy sold IBM was taken from

        • @rayski57: Oh no I'm aware of that, just following the trail of OS requests haha. Looks like no love for OS/2 though :)

        • +1

@gokhanh: Fixed, thanks for reminding me. I used to work for IBM at that time, but it's a long forgotten memory of a superior product yet again outdone by slick marketing

  • Can anyone know this tablet comes with MS office (365 or Home & Student)? Any expiry date for registration?

    • yes it does come with MS Office.

redeem product key by Dec 31 2016

  • Seems to be only 1 in stock for WA Online… either that or there's a limit of 1 per customer?

EDIT: Yeah just the 1 left in stock for someone on WA Online. No stock in Balcatta or Cannington.
I ended up ordering off "MSY Online" so not sure where that'll even come from.

Good deal though - bought two to replace my 1st gen Nexus 7's.
I'll keep an eye out for those BT keyboards as well!

  • +1

MSY also had the official Acer W4 bluetooth keyboard case on special for $29 recently, but it's back up to $65 now.

I'd be keeping an eye on it though since if they're clearing out the tablets there's a good chance there might be another clearance on the case as well sometime soon.

    • I don't suppose someone bought one of the cases and isn't going to use it? If so I'd like to buy it from you.

      • MSY have no W4 tablets left for sale now, but lots of W4 keyboard cases. They are probably hoping to sell at least a few at full price to all the new tablet owners. But I don't think that there will be too many people who are willing to spend $65 on an accessory for a $99 clearance item. So it's just a waiting game I think.

My bet is still that they'll go on special again soon.

(the only potential spanner in the works would be a possible new tablet release from Acer that follows the exact same form factor)

        • Yes, noted. I expect at some stage they will do that. In the meantime I have a bunch of tablets, wireless k/b & mouse combos, BT k/b and loose cases fopr various tablets….I don't wanna wait

        • Checking MSY availability it seems they are starting to sell out of these cases, almost none in WA. Presumably that means the people who picked up the bargain tablet see the value in having the folio case even at $65 - not me. I'll sit and hope it stays in stock until i comes down to a realistic price.

        • @rayski57:

WA_Cannington was out already out of stock a couple of weeks ago when I picked up the keyboard myself on special. Since then the only apparent change to the stock levels has been WA_Balcatta, and sometimes it only takes just a few units to trigger the Low Stock status.

Just trying to be optimistic for you ;)

        • @cainn: Ah no matter, I'll stick it out and see if Varsity end up with a few when they drop the price. thanks for the clarification, WA not too much of a concern unless it's a trend…..

        • @rayski57:

Just in case you (or anyone else who might wander in here) haven't seen this yet, which you probably have: http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/peripherals/13843-acer-npkbd…

          25 bucks ;)

        • @cainn: hmm, tempting, but if it's the one in the pic. it's really meant for 10" tablets so would be next to useless with the 8" one.
It would slip around inside scratching/getting scratched and potentially fall out the end when being carried. I'll call and see which it is, then let you all know what I find out.
Well of course that bwould never happen, yet again their ridiculous phone system intervenes….apparently 10:05 is too early for their system to switch over to bus. hours function i.e. redirect calls to where they need to go rather than giving the closed, please piss off until later message.
          MSY, you are my heroes.

        • @cainn: Thanks, that is re-assuring, now if only I could get thru to them and get 2 put on hold (& confirm they have the right one in this store).

  • +2

Tempting to buy… although do not have much use for it. Sigh!

    • I was the same, figured screw it I'll get one :)

Our old HP Touchpad with Android is starting to have issues anyway.

  • Battery life supposedly around 8 hour mark judging from reviews. Looks ok.
Werent the Unisurf ones a tad cheaper a few weeks back from HN ?
Windows tablet really is for work purposes?

    • Strictly suited to work? I think that it makes using serious mobile applications possible, so no not just for work.
I think the really key moment will be when Windows 10 is on each device you use so that it will parallel what has been available in the IOS world for many years. Speaking as a technology and IT veteran, that's the only serious advantage of Apple products. that day draws near.
Android's fine for cheap devices, but there are too many potential security issues for my liking. Hence I'd take a Windows tablet over an Android one, just like I use a Windows notebook rather than a Chromebook. If you wany to do more than consume media and navigate, then the choice is pretty clear I'd say.
The Unisurf tablets lack the same quality and no doubt will never see maker supplied Windows upgrades like the Acer tablets do. Price is important, but equally important (I'd say more so) is value for money and that's where this tablet stands out from the cheap Chinese stuff.

  • +3

Damn u ozbargain…. another $110 gone from my wallet for no real reason!

  • -3

Now if only it had Z3795 CPU, 4GB RAM and a GPS, I'd be over the moon. Alas it aint so.
I guess we'll just use this as holding pattern in the voyage from Android tablet/Android phone/Win PC to a wholly Windows world. That would appease the gods, well at least my wife the technophobe who works with expensive tech everyday!
Anyone know what I can get for a used Nexus 7 Gen1 in excellent condition?
