$100 Windows 8 tablet is very tempting but I've read that the Clover Trail processor is far worse than the current generation.

    • +8

      Pros:
Proper version of Windows 8 in a small size

      Cons:
Low grade screen; Display feels pixelated and hard to look at; Out of the 32GB storage, you only get 9GB once Windows is installed; No keyboard dock included in the package; Doesn't use microUSB to charge from

This tablet is a steaming pile of 1st gen trash, ie. typical Acer

      • Looks like they're just trying to clear out stock.

Windows 8 tablets in an 8" form factor suck most of the time. 8" is fine on Android because that is a phone OS that is scaled up (i.e., made bigger).

Besides the screen, which is incredibly small for an OS designed for the desktop (mostly), there often isn't enough storage.

Another problem is that they charge over USB, so you have often choose between charging or using your peripherals. Many don't have a HDMI out either, so no external display besides Miracast (if it supports it) or a USB display link.

You really want a 10" at a minimum, and 12" for the best usage. With 8" you choose between having text that is way too small, or having UI elements that are big enough, but barely offer any usable space.

        • +7

This one doesn't charge over USB has a separate charging port and has microHDMI out.

        • +1

Hmmm, I sorta agree with you with the desktop mode being really bad with small screen. Even with 10 inch screen, if the screen resolution is high, sometimes it can be pain in the eyes to actually use it, especially when high DPI mode doesn't work with the program you want to use. That being said, the metro mode is alright for tablets (barring the lack of apps).

Though, if anyone is going to get a Windows tablet, I really think they shouldn't bring in expectations from Android tablets or iPads. Windows 8 barely started the whole idea of Windows tablet that is close to Android/iOS experience imo. I am not saying that Windows tablets are bad, being able to run x86/x64 programs is enough for some people for it to tip over the balance. I am simply saying that I see a lot of rooms for improvement for tablet experiences.

        • +1

@AznMitch: Basically the problem is that desktop apps do not translate well to a touchscreen in the first place.

        • @Diji1: Pretty much. I think time will solve the problem. I think with a stylus, it's better than just having touch as your main input. It's a pity that not many producers produce the tablets with a stylus.

        "1st gen trash"

Acer's w500 has this beat by a few years. Mine still runs fine and even holds a charge. I can't say that for most other laptops.

        "32GB storage"

Delete recovery partition and pre-installed software to get closer to 17GB.

"Doesn't use microUSB to charge from"

This has an 18W power supply. USB generally tops out at 10W. Using a wall wart allows it to charge close to twice as fast.

Yes it has flaws, but it is $100.

    • Could sell it or use for yourself

      • +4

@leekatdel I think that is what cuek was implying, if anyone was interested in buying the other on off him.

  • +2

This tablet is really slow compare to the HP Stream 7. It lags like hell

  • +1

See I'd almost buy the tablet if it was 1 for $100, but 2 for $200 is silly. I don't need the second.

    • Here's a good idea: when you buy one, the other one might be listed as $0.

So try and buy one and return the one that costs $200.

Then you get one for free.

      • Very hard to do a return now from DSE.

        • Yep. So you need to try and find an employee who's about to quit or just doesn't care.

        • +1

Sorry, I have not returned an item to DSE in a while. Could you please tell what has changed with their returns policy? Are they always trying to send to manufacturer for repair in most cases these days? I will appreciate if you could throw some light on your experience please. Thank you.

Intel Atom Z2760 processor (1.8GHz), Windows 8, 1GB memory, 32GB storage, HDMI, Bluetooth, up to 8 hours video playback. TA8078P2. 8.1"

Is it 1gb of ram or 2gb?

    • +1

      2GB

  • not touching it, the Z2760 is such a far cry from the z37xx, it lagged even running android

for abit more than $100 you can spend on chinese windows tabs with the Z3735f chips and dual boot OS

    • +1

My phone runs a Z2580 and it doesn't lag at all. Some apps crash due to, I'm guessing, a poorly compiled kernal - but it runs fast enough.

      • +1

but that Acer tablet is trying to run full version windows 8 with that awful Atom. so think 2010 netbooks basically.

      • +3

the Z2580 is infact newer than Z2760 so might be some arch improvements but id imagine little

        • yup, faster memory speeds, 10% higher clock speed, better GPU, better baseband chip and better thermal controls. Aimed at actually being a phone processor, unlike the Z2760.

      • the cpu is bad enough on it's own but with just 1GB ram it's a double whammy lagfest!

the Acer tab might be trash if you're expecting $500+ tablet performance.. But as a $100 media player and internet device it can't be all that bad.

wouldnt this make a good Pipo type replacement

doesnt charge over usb? that means the usb is free for peripherals

screen bad? who cares, it has hdmi out

not enough nvram? who cares, use a sd card

think of the screen as a backup, just duct tape the thing to the back of a monitor

    • Think same. A torrent download machine. If its good enough to play dota, it will be perfect

  • The screen is really terrible. So bad that my two eyes saw the colour differently thanks to the tn panel.
    It was really flexy too.
    Its cheap, but its CHEAP

  • When can DSE have a 10% off Apple sale again? So I can actually use these DSE gift cards from coles.

    • If you wanted to buy apple, it would have been a good idea to buy before they hiked prices by 15%. Now with a 10% saving, you would still be paying 3.5% more than the standard RRP. Not quite sure the actual price hike in % but, yeah still paying higher with the weak AUD.

  • on the DS website it states Acer W3-810 32GB 1GB RAM, pls update the title/post

  • Despite saying 1GB of ram on dicksmith website, this tablet is stated to have 2GB of ram on Acer's website directly and everywhere else I could find that sells or has reviews on this product.

Could be 1GB, though chances are it's 2.

  • im still holding onto $600 worth of DSE cards that I bought using $600 worth of Giftecards which I bought from that eBay sale when people didn't know what to buy so they bought giftcards.

  • From trusted review

"The Acer Iconia W3 has an 8.1-inch Active Matrix TFT Color LCD, which sports a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. We have to say that the tablet sports one of the worst screens we've seen, and that affects the experience of using the tablet adversely." Aug 13, 2013

        • Called dick smith they have a website issue and will look into.

Started to call around VIC CBD stores, they wouldn't hold.

Bourke St mall CBD store had 3 packs (3 x 2 packs), went down and got one.. still 2 packs left FYI!

Mind you its mysteriously disappeared off the front of DSE's website!

        • @ezza:
          Hi
Can you please make a quick review about tablet?

          Thanks a lot

        • @arrogant84:

hey matey i prob wont open it until i can find a case and screen protector, however theres loads of reviews online about it

        • @arrogant84: Based on geekbench 3 scores, the CPU is faster than iPhone 4S, but slower than iPhone 5. Screen is known to be a TN screen (bad viewing angle, big colour shift when moving away from centre). It is quite bulky (like the first gen 7 inch Android tablet). Main selling points are: price (per tablet), Windows 8/8.1, Office 2013 Home and Student edition (to be confirmed).

        • Looks like a newer batch. Windows 8.1 with Bing. No Office 2013 home & student edition voucher.

  • +2

Was at the door at 8:45 am. The only person waiting for the tablets.
Was able to get my hands on two easily.

    Tablet size is OK.
Having it running windows 8 and surfing the web is also OK.
Did a live stream test of a HD video, that wasn't good, Had a lot of stuttering picture flow.
As people suspected it, the viewing of the screen isn't great. How ever I can deal with it because of the price.

Unit Comes with Ac adapter and manuals in the box only.

Unit does come out with 2GB of ram, with Windows installed it has 14.2gb left remaining.

I do see a space for a micro SD card slot, so presumably can expand storage.

You will need to get USB ON THE GO CABLE and MINI HDMI out. If you require them.

But Heck for 99.50 each,,, I CANNOT COMPLAIN =)

    All best to you all

    • Does it come with a Office 2013 Home and Student edition voucher?

      • No, only the try version installed I think.

      • deleted.

      • not in voucher form preinstalled activation for Office 365 One Year Subscription
for one computer/mac and one tablet

  • Don't forget guys if you buy one please come back and let us all know how it performs for future buyers. Cheers :)

    Quick Review

The tablet runs Windows 8.1 Bing Edition. That's why the tablet costs less now. Gone is the Office 2013 Home and Student Edition. Replaced with Office 365 One Year Subscription. Also, no microUSB cable (unlike the earlier batch).

Screen: It is TN screen and the screen mask made it worse. Unlike HP Stream 7, which defaults to 125% display zoom. Acer left it as is (100%), but with the low res, it makes screen looks every worse. Go to display and set it to 125% and it will be more usable. The viewing angle is bad - as expected, since it is TN.

Wifi: It is weaker than other tablets. Didn't find my 5GHz wifi network. However, HP Stream 7 did not find it either.

Bloatware: Lots. Acer ones + McAfee.

Stability: The tablet has crashed once already (had to force a reboot). The intel display driver installed has an issue. It causes "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in desktop mode. That means if you leave the tablet in desktop mode, it is highly likely it will crash and recover (which will take time for the tablet to display the screen). Hoping Windows Update (which includes a display driver update will fix it).

Bottom line: If you have not used a Windows 8 tablet before, the underwhelmed hardware, and the poorly prepared software by Acer will frustrate you. Frankly, this tablet is bad for both Windows 8 and Acer. HP Stream 7 or HP Stream 8 are better cheap / low cost alternative - much better screen and at least HP knows what they are doing.

You get what you paid for. Even at $99 (for 1), this tablet will take more time to get ready than your typical Android tablet. It is smart for DSE to sell them in a pair. Unless you really have needs to use a low end, sub-par Windows 8.1 tablet(s), you are better off spending your money elsewhere.

    • Does the tablet even have 5GHz WiFi support?

A lot of the cheaper devices don't have dual band support to save costs - even the Celeron NUC (Bay Trail) doesn't ship with a dual-band card, only 2.4GHz.

      • Good point, only wireless N - so no 5Ghz.

        • Wireless N can be either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

Usually, the way to differentiate whether a card can support 802.11n on 5GHz frequency is to see if it supports 802.11a (which is also 5GHz). If it's only "b/g/n" then it'll most probably be 2.4GHz-only.

        • +1

@happychappy1: Okay, the box says Wireless b/g/n - given wireless a is missing, the wireless n is 2.4 GHz only.

More Info - After Windows Update is done

Display Driver Issue: The update appears to fix the display driver problem. So turning off the tablet while in desktop mode is working now.

USB OTG: Works for both flash drive and logitech receiver (for keyboard+mouse combo). I tried the Unified Receiver one.

HDMI: Works, 1080p works. If you use the 1080p mode (which means the tablet LCD screen is off), without keyboard and mouse connected to USB port (or bluetooth), it is going to be hard to use.

1080p mkv streaming via LAN/NAS: Works okay.

Therefore, if you want to use this tablet, Windows Update is a must.

Some comments on unit based on purchase today.

    • Office 365 personal - must be activated by sept 2015.

    • File explorer reports 15.2GB remaining out of 20GB (status out of box).

    • Disk Management reports 20.9GB normal partition, 8GB recovery partition. Therefore ~5GB used by OS

    • Experienced no crashes, admittedly first thing after initial setup / power on was disabling McAfee and running windows update. (update size approx. 315mb)

    • The left hand side of the unit gets very warm, sometimes hot to the touch if cpu utilisation is kept at 100% for extended periods

    • Youtube at 720p / 1080p 'setting' played fine on IE, stuttered on chrome.

    • for pseudo 'docking station' mode with USB keyboard/mouse/hdmi, it is one of the rare few 8" windows tablet in recent times to offer a separate A/C charging port.

For the price of a discounted Lumia 530 (e.g. $30~$40 after taking into account the price of office 365 personal), the device is quite acceptable.

    • Office 365… All tablets with Windows 8.1 Bing edition come with Office 365 personal. Office 2013 home and student edition, on the other hand, is better value as it does not expire.

Compared to HP Stream 7, the screen on the Acer is bad and to be honest, completely negates the 8 inch advantage. HP Stream 7 is sharper. Besides, the HP Stream 7 deal from Amazon was cheaper. Stream 7's CPU is also better.

The fact that you must buy 2 is also a negative. The problem I am facing is that I don't want to sell my other one because I fear the buyer will complain.

  • Appreciate the feedback everyone :)

  • The Clover Trail processor on that tablet isnt great like people are saying, Bay Trail is current gen and we will be seeing Cherry Trail appearing on tablets within next few months. I got an 8inch Bay Trail tablet from china for about $150AUD and its blazing fast, can even play some older 3D windows games like Killing Floor and Counter Strike Source.

  • Buy one turd, get one free

  • So I noticed that mine is reporting 4xcpu. Quad core rather than dual?
