Acer Iconia W4 Bluetooth Keyboard (NP.kbd1a.009) $25 @ MSY

180

Bluetooth Folio keyboard for the Acer W4 that was on sale recently at MSY. It should also work with most other tablets with bluetooth.

Was waiting for this to come down in price. Down from $65 not the lowest it has been, but a great deal for those who have purchased the tablet.

It will technically "work" with other tablets but it has plastic retention clips that are an exact fit for the W4-series tablets and probably wont be very suitable (if at all) for use with anything else.

    • I was under the impression that this is the "Crunch" keyboard and don't believe there are any retention clips. I could be wrong.

You can be forgiven for thinking that because that's what the image on the MSY website would seem to indicate ;) But I actually have one here, purchased from MSY, using that link, and it's not the crunch version; it's the smaller case customized for the W4 specifically (Model#: KBBT81811, P/N: NP.KBD1A.009 — on the case and the box itself, which matches up with the data in the MSY listing).

A more accurate picture can be found here: http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/390734/TABLETPC_TABLET_PC_ACCESS…

A bit of video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=l4…

I guess it's not impossible that MSY are carrying both and have neglected to separate the listings but this is indeed what I received from them myself.

EDIT: this is probably a better look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIYrp_8tKv8

        • Thank you for clearing this up!

        • Just got one. I confirm it is indeed the folio keyboard case and not the crunch one. The pic on their website is misleading.

        • @sebby123: Same, it's the custom fitted one. Plenty of stock at Varsity Lakes

  • Interesting. Been looking for a cover like this for my Toshiba Encore 8. I think its doable with the clips given the dimensions measured in Phonearena:

    http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Toshiba-Encore_id8145
    http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Acer-Iconia-W4_id8184

The Iconia is slightly longer (5mm) but can probably find some padding on the side clips to fill 2.5mm each side. The top/bottom clips should be perfect with less than 1mm difference to make up for a 0.68mm extra depth.

  • Ordered for click and collect as $11 shipping fee is too much for a keyboard. Now wait for out of stock email.

    • As expected, received out of stock email LOL.

  • still pissed with the tablet deal from MSY

    • why?

      • Check the comments in the other deal. I am glad I didn't get one lol going to get one of those new Cherry Trail China tablets. 4GB RAM. Should be the same build quality based on the comments.

        • And the same price? Sounds like a good deal if it is.

        • @wtfnodeal: Nopes not same price based on what I have been told it will be around $225USD. But when compared it does dwarf the Acer in specs and comes with a Retina screen as well.

Check it out Teclast X98 Pro. Also has an aluminium shell as well.

May need Google Translate for some pages.

        • @jlogic: well then I am glad I did not miss the Acer deal because I am not paying A $300 for an 8" windows tablet.

        • @wtfnodeal: The Acer one was $99.

Anyone get "No payment modules have been installed" on the shipping section of checkout?

    • yep got that too, ordered in store instead

  • Will the Iconia W3 fit on with this?

Edit: According to Phonearena the dimensions are the same

  • Thanks Coolie, bought. I also was checking the price each day to see if MSY discounted it.

  • Bought it , thanks OP, a bit bulky otherwise really nice case…

  • Just bought one. Thanks OP !

    • What is with your phone system I've been trying to get thru to any of your Qld branches since 10am with no success - firstly wasn't off night switch for ages after 10am and gave the inane message 'we're closed blah blah….' and stated your hours. Then finally get thru only to be directed to the store whereupon you get the nessage that the user doesn't have a voicemail account, then it's their VM is full. and on it goes.

All I want to do is confirm that A. they have the correct case (not as pic on MSY website) B. they have 3 C. I'm not going to waste 1hr driving there waiting in line and finding out it was yet another exercise in frustration.
How do we get thru this to find the info and perhaps after the effort to achieve that ensure that 3 are kept for me so I still don't waste the trip?

      • Hi rayski57,

A.What case are you after ? I can double check again the specs for you
B.Which QLD branch you would like to pick up the cases from ?

        Thank you

        • NVM, been there confirmed for myself it was the custom fitted one for the W4-820 and they had plenty of stock.
Seems their eftpos terminal has been dead all day so I could only buy 2 (brother misses out) as I don't carry lots of cash - credit cards, debit cards, bank atm cards yes, but not cash. No alt. method of taking the $$$ so not a good look MSY.

  • ohhh sheep.. I bought it for $65 last week… patience is truly a virtue

    • +1

Don't feel too bad. I bought the tablet itself for $199 about 2 weeks before it dropped to $99. That's life!

I was lucky enough to get the keyboard case for $29 a few days later, but you're still out in front ;)

  • Thanks OP ordered one.

Now for a bluetooth mouse?? Any on special?

    • Yes, thanks OP.
Wife will be very happy she doesn't need to lug her notebook around to do email/work related docs etc. and doesn't need to know how to navigate 3 different OS's.
I'm happy as I have a good case/keyboard combo that fits well.
Now we just need a decent, relatively cheap & preferably smallish BT mouse. Anyone have ideas?

  • Thanks op, was looking for a nice case to go with the tablet.

  • You're very welcome everyone. On a side note. I may be selling the one I have ordered if anyone misses out. The W4 I ordered seems to be lost in the mail and Auspost can't seem to do very much. I have contacted MSY so lets see where that goes.. (Victoria BTW).

(Assuming this doesn't go missing too haha)

    • That sucks. I'm typing this from my W4. Almost killed it within the first day and it won't install updates. Installed Win10 on it and it works like a charm. Except the glass, which picks up fingerprints like it has a magnet for doing so. Good for $100, but wouldn't pay much more.

      • Yeah, I'm really enjoying windows 10 on my desktop. This would have been my first windows 8/10 tablet. I was curious to see how usable it was on a small touch screen/keyboard. Ah well, maybe it'll turn up.

        • It's good, but most applications are built for keyboard and mouse. Especially Chrome, where it's really, really hard to hit some things on the screen. Edge is alright though. Needs better extensions, however.

  • Does anyone know how to access to F1 to F12 keys? I didn't look too closely but I think the keyboard doesn't have these keys. Is there a workaround to perform the same actions but pressing a combination of keys?

    • No function keys, and no key modifier combination that can emulate them unfortunately (I've tried just about every combination imaginable in search of undocumented functionality to no avail). Your only option would be to use a key remapping utility (you could, for example, remap fn + 5 to F5 or whatever). It might get a bit fiddly due to the already customized layout depending on the specific tool you use (or however else you go about it) but it should be possible.

      • Probably best to use AutoHotKey

  • Overall happy with the KB case. Bit on the smallish side but will do.
However, there is no mechanism to securely hold the front cover closed and as a result this constantly makes the cover flap inside my bag so the tablet screen powers on and off because of the sleep-awake magnet feature. Is there a away to turn this off??

    • Use plastic band to hold it
