Civil Engineering - QUT or UQ?

IAmA high school student from a relatively well-off public school in Queensland. I do the fatal five(MathsB,C,Eng,Phys,Chem)+ a bludge subject(IT). I wish to do some kind of engineering course (I think both unis offer flexible first years), but for those who want the specifics, most likely civil.

The question is, QUT or UQ?

Any insight is much appreciated.

If I had my time again, I'd aim to go overseas to the most prestigious Uni possible. Cambridge, MIT , Stanford, etc.

Local uni's are ho hum, unless you are literally the best 1 or 2 in your year, the end result will all be about the same.

Those big international uni's will make you stand out come job time. IMO.

    • Hey Son,

Do you have any experience concerning these prestigious overseas unis?

I have always assumed that i am not smart enough nor financially able to attend. What percentile should you be in and how much money should you be looking at paying for a Bachelors in Engineering overseas say MIT?

It really doesn't matter. What matters is how well you do and how qualified you are. I'd rather go to whichever uni is closer or easier to get to so I'm spending more time studying and having fun rather than sitting in traffic.

To be honest, if you want to bolster your job prospects, look at doing a Master's course or internships as you're studying.

The answer is "I am a".

It will matter very little if it is QUT or UQ on your resume. UQ will involve more theoretical study in your degree than QUT. If you just want the degree and to get out of study, do QUT. If you're really into learning it in detail and probably wanting to do a masters degree for your own interests, go to UQ. I'd say UQ has slight advantages like more industry links, university links, a nice big campus but for me it isn't worth the unnecessary extra load as I just want to GTFO of uni. An engineer's hardest-working stage of their careers will be in university.

Internships while you study are absolutely golden, definitely get them if you can. They will look great for recruiters for graduate programs (internship in summer break of 3rd year leading to graduate employment after the next summer break.

Source: I'm an undergrad engineering student @ QUT doing mechanical. I have been to Griffith as well and have a good friend doing engineering at UQ.

Come to USYD. We're the best for civil! :D

Civil is pretty bland, but a lot of guys love it! Prepare to be doing subjects like Soil Mechanics, Steel structures, Materials science for civil 1, 2, and probably 3, engineering management. In your second year start looking for an internship.

    Can't really argue with that.

  • If you choose QUT and end up doing some intern work/ part time work in a consultancy firm in the CBD then travel to/from classes will be a breeze. Also guest lecturers at QUT come from real private firms giving you great meaningful lectures. I have around 12 years study at QUT and highly recommend it.

  • I don't know the two universities but I would pick the one with better industry links. If you know anyone involved in the civil engineering profession give them a call and ask which they prefer.
Also consider how far it is to travel to the campus

  • No one really cares which uni you come from. Things that stand out do matter, and international experience tends to make an applicant stand out quite a lot. Which local uni you went to, doesn't stand out at all.

Now, I'd do research on career prospects. Civil engineering churns out heaps of graduates. When I graduated, about 3 quarters of the cohort were civil engineers, the rest being everything else; mechanical, mechatronics, electrical, ICT, etc… Even the mechanical engineers I spoke to are working in the building industry.

However, with that said, if you don't stand out, it's hard to get anywhere.
