BBQ - Are You a Gas or a Charcoal Person?

Apart from the obvious heath issue with charcoal, when it comes to BBQ, do you prefer Gas or Charcoal?

I find myself burning charcoal for any type of BBQ now as I love the flavor that it gives. (+ cancer)

How about you ?

    Gas for me.

Gas as it's simple and quick.

I find my old gas BBQ with a layer of volcanic rock that has had the drippings from a million sausages fall on it gives a pretty good flavour. Keeping a gas grill cased in a layer of "flavour" is important, and I think many people clean their BBQ too thoroughly. There is no avenue for bacteria to grow on a high temperature steel grill, leave the charred, greasy mess for next time!
I scrape the hot plate and grill down prior to each session, but never use any chemicals or brushes etc.

If you leave it dirty after cooking you will get cockroaches all over the grill. I know high temperature sterilises it, but as a friend of mine once told me "sterilized shit is still shit". I like to leave my bbq clean!

I leave mine dirty and rarely ever see a cockroach at my place and I dont do any pest treatments.
I do have a lot of geckos.

      • we leave ours "dirty" after cooking as well, i do clean it with those BBQ wipes from bunnings/bigw/woolies before i use it (with the heat on) i hope that with heat and wipes its clean enough to use :P

    • Except rats love to lick that stuff up. And somehow they get under the cover and leave their droppings all over the place.

No matter how much scrubbing, soaking, heating, burning you do the smell/taste of rat piss doesn't go away.

Both. I prefer the charcoal, but do whip out the gas at times.

  • Where do you get charcoal at an affordable price in Australia?
    Real charcoal, not heat beads.

    • Oakleigh in Melbourne

They sell 20kg Charcoal for $30.

It's more expensive than heat beads but way better.
I use heat beads as a last resort.

I get 20kg bags from my local charcoal chicken for $32.

  • I have neither at the moment, but given the option I definitely prefer the taste of a charcoal BBQ

  • Both.

    Charcoal for Weber & Spit
    Gas for Barbeque

    • And where do you get the affordable charcoal in Australia?

  • Charcoal doesn't give you cancer, it's the burnt fat that does it. From what I've seen, most gas users will burn their meat under the pretence of giving it that BBQ flavour. Doh!

Low and slow on charcoal is the way to go and with a Looftlighter, it's just as quick and convenient as a gasser.

Cooking with gas, is like cooking with farts. :-)
