Where to Buy Large Amount of Bubble Wrap to Wrap Surfboards

Hello, My son is going overseas and needs to wrap his surfboards to ensure they do not get damaged in transit. He was thinking of bubble wrap. Does anyone know where this can be purchased. If anyone has any better ideas to protect the surfboards, please let me know. Thank you.

    Officeworks sells rolls of it.

    • Thanks.

  • plenty on eBay or office work on eBay

    • Thank you. Looks like Officeworks it is. No time for ebay. Flying out on Wednesday.

    • Oops. Duplicate comment.

  • Jetski and towrope - youll also save on airfares

    • LOL. Yes, this is a much cheaper option.

  • Maybe a surfboard bag is a better idea? It will be a lot easier to transport to his hotel and and then on his flight home he doesn't need to worry about getting more bubble wrap. This however is NOT the cheapest option. Infact a bag will set him back probably $150.

He needs to make sure he gets a bunch of fragile tape put on if he uses bubble wrap. I've seen how baggage handlers handle luggage and I know how expensive surf boards can be. I'm concerned about it being under a bunch of bags.

I have no idea where to get one in Melbourne, theres a few surf shops in the CBD that you could try.

Something like this might work http://shop.triggerbrothers.com.au/cover-fcs-6ft-dayrunner-h…

    Where is he going?

    • Hi knick007. He has a bag like that. He is bringing multiple boards so, I think he wants to keep them from damaging each other.

He is going to Bali with a friend that he surfs with.

  • Make sure you cling wrap and padlock any surfboard bag you bring to Bali…

    • I didn't think of that. Do they still do that at the airport?

I must get him to put a padlock on it too.

lock is irrelevant (and easily bypassed).

        Just don't import drugs.

        • You are right. I am more worried if someone puts something into the board covers.

        • @what: very unlikely. I dont bother locking any of my bags anymore. People who want in will get in irrespective of the lock/ties/security you have on the bag.

Plus i can't think of any cases of people having drugs put into their bags at the airport. AFAIK the cartels say you've won a competition and provide luggage.

        • @Davo1111: Thanks. I will try not to worry too much then. The boys should be OK.

  • You can get bubble wrap from the reject shop too. Saw it in there on the weekend.

If it were me, i'd get a fridge box and cut it to size. I'm sure you could put something together with towels, bubble wrap, and glad wrap.

    • Davo111 - Got it today. Very reasonably priced.

      • excellent to hear.

  • I found some at Bunnings when I was moving, I can't remember if I ended up buying it from bunnings or officeworks.

Thank you for your response. I ended up getting it at Reject Shop.

  • A good solution is to get the bicycle boxes that the bicycle shops leave out for rubbish removal - they are deadly strong and the right length and easy to cut down to size. You just need a Stanley knife and a roll of tape. When he gets to Bali he can flatten it out and then easily put it together when he returns. I have just used 15 of these to look after artwork when moving house AND now they're safely in storage. Enjoy the surf.

    • deadly strong?

      I wouldn't risk it.

    • Thank you olympic2000. Ended up getting bubble wrap at Reject Shop because I was already going shopping at Knox today. No time to go find any cardboard but it is a good idea for next time. Will have to get my son to organise himself earlier than 2 days before flying out.

Scrape all the wax off before packing. He will need tropical wax when he gets there anyway.

Then use a towel and the clothes that you'll be bringing anyway, don't bother with the bubblewrap. Bunnings sells big rolls too.

If needed throw a pillow in and wrap it around the noses. You can grab a pool noodle or two from a two dollar shop and cut them up for rails, or tail but if you are trying to squeeze too many boards in the extra width can make the zip too hard to close. Just try and use t-shirts and stuff to protect the edges.

Use a zip tie instead of a padlock and travel with nail clippers in carry on. Use a special coloured zip tie if you are worried about tampering.

    • BaryGusey, sounds like you have done it all before. Thank you. Wax has been scraped off and he used bubble wrap. Took you advise and also used his clothes and towels to protect the boards.

      • Bit of bubblewrap wont hurt, and if it all fits in no worries.

Board bags for multiple boards usually come with a coated bublewrap sheet or two to slip between boards anyway.

Slip a garbage bag in too, chances are he will be travelling about with wet gear as he goes from place to place. Jumping straight out of the surf means wet stuff in with the dry stuff when you cram it all into a bag. Zip seal sandwich bags are good to slip phones and documents in too.

More important than all this…. learn a few simple phrases - "thank you" in particular.

  • Costco

  • Thank you all for your responses. All packed now. I hope he hasn't forgotten anything. He flies out tomorrow. Now all I will do is worry till he gets home.

  • Try Macarthur Wrap and Strap

  • We just purchased a couch from fantastic furniture. 'Twas covered in heavy duty bubble wrap, so we've got loads of it. Maybe your local has some they are throwing out? (Or pm me if you are in the hunter region)

    Edit: oops, too late.

  • Thank you all. Everything is good.

I thought that he would have problems flying out because of the volcano ash but it seems that Virgin and Jetstar are the only ones cancelling flights. He flew Garuda with no problems.
