Recommendations for Gas/Electricity

Hi All,

Moving into a new apartment next week (renting, first time out of home).

I was hoping someone could provide recommendations on electricity/gas providers.

Small 1 bedroom apartment for 2 people.

Thanks!

I'm with Red energy since last few years and their rates are better than few companies who are offering discount.

    try this
    https://www.onebigswitch.com.au/

I got 22% off electricity and 16% off gas via Energy Australia

  • Do you have a 'smart meter'? If so you might be interested in the AGL offer/deal under which you get FREE electricity all Saturday (as in, for 24 hours), for a year. We're on it, and it saves us heaps. We heat the entire house up for free on Saturdays with an electric heater (this saves us a day of gas usage as an added bonus), we do almost all laundry on Saturdays, and even run the dishwasher mostly on Saturdays (once mid-week only, usually).

If AGL offers to extend this deal for another year, I'm defo' going to buy or lease some kind of electric vehicle with an easily exchangeable battery system, and buy a couple of spare batteries.

  • Be very careful of advertising hype - one company advertising say 30% off may actually be more expensive than another company advertising just 10% off. This is because their rates and supply charges can be very different.

Since you're "first time out of house", you won't have any past bills to run through an online calculator to find the best deal for you, which makes comparisons a bit harder. There is no company that is cheaper in all circumstances.

Like cniminc, I have an account with Red Energy, and I'm happy with them. However, like all retail energy companies, all they have to do is send you a bill every couple of months - they don't do anything else. It's surprising how many of these companies can't even get that right, though.

Some energy companies (including Red Energy) have a scheme where if an existing customer "refers" you, you both get a $50 gift card.

And be careful of the daily service fee.
Cheap rates often mean higher daily service fee. For a small place with only 2 people its likely that your usage will be lower than average and as a result, service charges will make up a bigger portion of your bill.

    • Good point. Lower prices don't always mean the best overall price. A little off topic, but out of interest, who are you with? I am looking to switch in NSW and was looking at redenergy and the power shop. Currently with Energy Australia (was hooked up to them automagically when we moved in).

Ended up with AGL for electricity and Origin for Gas (cheaper than bundling).
We have a solar system (on the current 8c net feed in tariff) that cuts our usage through daylight hours significantly, so daily service fee equates to 33% (in Winter) to 80% (in Summer) of our quarterly bill.
An Excel spreadsheet with your usage and the rates for each provider will quickly show you the best options.

  • I can recommend Powershop and get you and me a $75 credit by referral. PM me your email id for the invite.

  • I can recommend Red Energy.Great customer service and competitive rates. Please PM me for $50 referral credit.

I was on AGL for year with 10% off.
I got sick of them and decided to leave for origin energy once my contract was finishing up. Origin were offering 30% plus the first month usage free.

AGL founded out, and begged us to come back and said they would matched their offer, I told them that cost per kwH/supply rate was slightly more that origin. So they increased the % discount/ thrown in flybuy points and some start up credit.

It best to compare the rates they charge, not the % discount they are offering.
