  • I'm guessing we're paying for the hard drive itself basically with almost "free" system. But then again, no os so have to buy license separately, looks like a bit of work around…

    • Lunix :)
      Never buy software :D

    • It has its own embedded software platform…http://www.buffalotech.com/resource-center/nas-system/terastation-nas-system

Not sure if I missed something, but in my experience all NAS' of this scale have an embedded OS, generally accessible as through a web portal.

Just recently got 5TB drive delivered from officeworks for $150. So I will max put 12TB drive at $400. $200 for this machine is not worth it.

      I haven't seen a 6 bay nas for less than $200 though

      • +1

Agree, but 6x2TB drives are annoying though.

        • +1

Fair enough, although it would depend on what level of raid you were after

        • @JBOT:

RAID6 should be a bare minimum these days

    • How did you get 5tb for $150?

    • What drive is in the 5TB Seagate Back up Plus? I bought a couple of these guys too :)

I don't follow your logic. The 5TB price was an error which they honoured. This has 6 x 2TB drives which are worth over $100 each and offers you various raid combinations and better performance than 2.3 5TB drives would and selling the drives on ebay would likely see you get between $100 and $120 each for them.

Do you compare apples with oranges often?

      • You make some good points…re raid and speed. Hard disc speed is hardly the issue for network drives through.

However, have you considered ebay 10% fees? + 2.5% paypal fees? And the hassle of selling them? I think the hassle and the fees will not make it worth it for most people.

        cheers.

It's showing as sold out anyway now when I just looked.

  • Where does it say that it actually came with 12TB of disks?

    • The fact that it says 12TB. Buffalo units that ship without disks state 0TB. Ie 4bay 4TB (1TB disks) or 6 bay 0 TB (no disks).

      Anyway sold out now.

  • Why did I wake up late today :(

    • +2

You can go back to sleep now :)

  • The performance is not as good as others. I'm not sure whether you guys focus on capability only. but the performance is also important.

not much a deal if it can only handle 2tb drives

    • Nobody said it can only handle 2TB drives, even though 2TB drives are what is supplied with this SKU. The buyer can certainly replace them at his/her cost after purchasing and receiving the unit.

See http://www.buffalotech.com/content/files/products/Supported_… for the list of compatible drives, which are not limited to drives of capacity of 2TB or less.
