Buying Shoes in The USA

Hey GUys,

I'm going to NY for a few days and happen to need new runners.

I've never been before but was wondering where shoes sell cheap in NY.

I am looking to buy new balance shoes. (usually would just buy at new balance outlet)

you ned to go here and spend a day or two

    massive outlet, bus ride away

Bus ride costs USD 40 per person for the return trip, not worth it if you're going just to buy shoes. There are plenty of sneaker shops in the main shopping districts of NY. That being said, with the exchange rate as it is, unless something is on sale it's unlikely to be that much cheaper than what you can get in Australia.

Catch of the Day were selling a lot of different styles of New Balance sneakers last I checked a couple of days ago. They were generally $60.

        don't just buy shoes!
there are over 220 stores there (biggest in usa)

great if you need to buy handbags for the wife/girlfriend, prices are quite good

levi, tommy, ralph lauren, CK all very cheap

sunglasses hut are cheap too (they have discount shelves)

also head to the information booth and get a free voucher booklet, all international people get it free

        • Yes, don't forget the vouchers. And if you find other vouchers (no, not a reprint, an actual different voucher), print them and/or bring them along as some outlets stack them. And when at the outlet store you plan to purchase at, ask them if they have a discount for purchases over a certain amount. I was forced in one store to purchase another $15 t-shirt that I liked to get another $40 off, and having already used a voucher to begin with.

Heaps of sport stores all around New York! Macys has a pretty good range and you can get an extra 10% off with your Australian (or other foreign) passport. I can explain exactly where to get this if you'd like.

Just a note though is it DEFINITELY going to be cheaper? With the dollar etc? Also add 6.5% tax on top of the price + currency conversion + credit card surcharge etc etc

Don't forget state sales taxes and currency conversion fees on top of the basic price.

I found while shopping if it wasn't on sale, it didn't work out significantly cheaper.

The outlets though are great. $190 pair of calvin klein jeans in AU for $50 (after conversions etc…)

I found going to stores like TJ-MAXX, Marshals and Ross was very worthwhile with big brand runners like nike for cheap as $20, also I recommend buying sketchers shoes while you are over there, much cheaper than stores here. Also if you are going to LA it is very worthwhile to go to the Ross in Santa Monica, bought some really cheap designer handbags there also. Also bought a few pairs of cheap sketchers runners.

I got a tip-off by locals in NYC to shop at Jersey Gardens.
Since its not in the State of NY, there is no sales tax(as far as i recalled).
Not too far from NYC. There are buses from the NY bus terminal that looks like a bigger central station. You will feel like you are driving through Penrith on the way, but the Mall is huge and you will feel like you are in shopping heaven.

    • interesting.

i'll actually be staying new NJ

      • Another tip, clothes and shoes were definately about 50% cheaper, but when you do find advertised specials, they are really cheap! eg. i bought Onitsuka Tiger shoes for $19 US dollars, they would have been $150 here.

        • thanks for the tips.

  • Also look for SAS shoes. Most comfortable work shoes ever.

  • If you are just after one pair maybe buy from Amazon, then have them delivered to your accomodation? Don't forget to tip whoever looked after your package.
