Job Interview - People skills

Hi,

I have an interview soon and am wondering how I am supposed to greet the receptionist? Usually I say "Hi, I got an interview at x time" is this ok?

My people skills are low, am I supposed to say "Hi, hows it going?" does the receptionist opinion matter in relation to job offer? Its a small company btw.

Any other people skills advice in relations to talking the partners etc.. is welcome.

Thank you.

Absolutely, especially in a small company, the interviewer (or manager) may ask the receptionist for their opinion of a candidate. One certainly should never be rude to receptionists or anyone within vicinity of the company.

"Hi, I have an interview at X time" is probably okay, you aren't being impolite. See if there's time for small chat while the receptionist is checking the calendar/schedule or getting paperwork (if any) for you to fill in.

Plus sometimes there may not be a receptionist and you'll see the person you're going to have the interview with, and of course the first impression is important.

Back at my old job we always asked the receptionist what she thinks of the candidate, as there's always something that we developer-interviewers wouldn't pickup…

    • At the other end of the spectrum, I also work at a small company (16 Employees) and our receptionist has no input about candidates whats so ever.

And that's how it should be. Not only that any input would be meaningless if the interviewers can't work out in 1 hour then the 1 minute the receptionist won't make up for it.

        Lol

I guess if u ask some people if what the plants and furniture think matter They will say yes. But I. Reality it dosnt. Nor does what the receptionist think matter. As long as your not rude it's irrelevant.

    Good morning/afternoon/evening, I'm XXXXX.
I have an appointment with YYYYY at XXX AM/PM.

Make a comment about the weather or something.

The receptionist will probably be asked about your demeanor, especially in a small company.

They are obviously interviewing you for a position. Have in mind what 'value' you will bring to the organisation. I'm not talking about just your technical skills, small businesses need to get everyone pulling above their weight just to survive sometimes. How will this firm be better off with you onboard. What makes you unique, why would they hire you over somebody else with similar skills and experience.

    Whatsuuuup….no seriously.

Gamechanger: Good morning,I have an appointment with "insert name" at 10.30.

Receptionist: Good morning, please take a seat "insert name" will be with you soon.

Gamechanger: "sits down and checks OzBargain" Finds a deal on Chromecast, ditches the interview, flags an Uber and heads for the closest Officeworks.

      Missed a couple of steps:

      ditches the interview

      • pulls spare sim from pocket, swaps SIM into phone
      • applies an uber code for new users (making the ride free)

      flags an Uber

      • Cash rewards ?

        • Only if the spare sim is a Telstra $30 starter kit for $15 with a $10~12 cashback which you use for ~90% off google play!

    • Gamechanger: Good morning,I have an appointment with "insert name" at 10.30.

Receptionist: Good morning, please take a seat "insert name" will be with you soon.

Gamechanger: Do you like finger nail wraps? Here have these.

      Receptionist: OMG I love them.

      Gamechanger: Your welcome, :D

      • Gamechanger: Ask your boss. I have a feeling that they'll be receiving some soon… ;)

    Just be casual but polite.

Gamechanger: "Hi, I have an interview at 10:30 with Bob Smith"

Receptionist: "Please take a seat and he will be with you shortly'

Gamechanger "Thank you" then sit down and wait while watching porn minus the porn

If your people skills are low you are going to struggle to get most jobs.

Maybe take a bunch of drugs before this interview you speak of.

    • Not this, dumbest idea ever.

    • If the position is 'Lab Rat' yes by all means do that

    • Is there a drug that makes you talkative?

More so the Nootropic drugs not cocaine type haha

My advice is to steer clear of small talk involving things such as importing rice, yum cha etiquette, pulled beef being a scam, fights over pizza vouchers, shower habits - you know, the things that some people treat as matter of fact daily life on this site…

  • What you're saying is fine. The most important thing is to make eye contact, smile and speak confidently.

gamechanger: Good morning, I have an appointment with "insert name" at 10.30.

Receptionist: Please take a seat and he will be with you shortly.

    gamechanger: Thanks.

notices that receptionist is a young attractive female, as they usually are

also notices that receptionist has somewhat of a cleavage

gamechanger: *oh shit, my eyes went down too low! I'd better go back up before she noti-"

Receptionist: My face is up here.

    gamechanger: Oops, sorry lol.

gamechanger and Receptionist: proceeds to lol

  • Be polite, confident, friendly and treat people with respect. Make eye contact, smile and raise ur chin. Chances are if you are shy, you slouch ur shoulders and chin is down. Maintain interest and ask questions that show you are genuinely interested. Ask for feedback after interview.

    Best of luck

  • Maybe undertake a short course in business communication skills or like professional communication. Theres many providers in each capital city whcih have these and can help you develop these skills, and also you can put this on your resume to show development. Plus it can act as an example for 'what is your weakness', where you can say you developed your professional communication skills by being pro active in seeking education and hands on training.

    • Interesting might do this!

The interview went completely different, it was basically a chat to see if they liked me, no interview questions which made it odd!

  • Receptionists do matter. You have to be smooth all the time after you enter the building. Everything matters. But yes, what you do in front of the board is the most important thing.
