iPad Air for dad's birthday - buy now or wait?

Hi all

My dad's birthday is coming up in September. He wants an ipad so I'm thinking of getting him an ipad air or air 2. Currently good guys and office works have it for $449 (ipad air) and $569 for air 2. Cause its so close to the potential new ipad release (ipad air 3 if any). My question is should I buy it now or hold off abit until late September/early October to get it.

I might score a bit of a discount but on the flip side I'm worried apple may jack up the prices and blame it on our AUD currency.

What do you guys think?

PS, we are set on the ipad and won't go to Android for the oldies

iPad air was released November 1st, 2013
iPad air 2 was released on October 22, 2014

If you need to have it before then, I'd just get it now.

No wait next year around august and come here ask the same question again…

  • The next ipad should come soon, when it gets aannounced the current ipads could drop straight away. So I'd say wait.

  • I saw an article today suggesting the announcement would be somewhere around September 9, with the launch normally 1-2 weeks after.

  • If there the current standard every day price then i don't see the harm in waiting those extra few weeks and if no deal or cheaper prices just go in and buy it.

Good guys currently have $50 off. I wonder how much Ipads normally drop when new lines are released

I personally suggest you to look through the Ozbargain (+ look at those 20% off eBay codes and stuff).
iPads do pop up frequently enough on Ozbargain deals (enough in my opinion to have enough information about the decent deals and whatnot), so I think it will give you a reasonable idea on what a good deal is.

  • If you will buy it now, make sure you use a credit card that has price protection. In case if the prices dropped when the new iPad came out.

  • I'd recommend iPad Air 2. Apple rarely increase the RAM on their products (It has been 1GB from iPad 3), the processor is specially tailored for iPad (A8X). So with all that into account, I personally think iPad Air 2 will be reasonably up to the spec for awhile. It's my personal opinion though, with technology, you can never be certain.

Wait for a deal on iPad Air 2, if you find a decent enough deal, I see no reason to not buy. That said, you are more likely to find a decent deal on Air 2 after the announcement.

  • "PS, we are set on the ipad and won't go to Android for the oldies"

    Such a closed mind….<sigh>

Not everyone likes Android, not everyone likes iOS.
Not everyone will move to Android, not everyone will move to iOS.
My dad uses Android, my mother uses iOS. They've chosen those because of the reasons that I don't know about. If I try to move them from one to another, I would have to face them question me on everything, EVERYTHING. Upgrading the phone for them (Galaxy Note 1-> Galaxy Note 3, iPhone 4 -> iPhone 6) was hard enough for me.

I personally hate showing loyalty towards any OS (since that gives more monopolistic powers to that OS). So I tend to look at both sides (I tend to put Windows tablets in a different category).

      • Yeah look I get it we have both here, it was more the blanket "We are set and won't".

So even if something better/cheaper/whatever comes along they're buying an iPad - that's it.

You wouldn't say "We're set on DVDs and won't go to Netflix"……would you????

"We prefer iOS at this point" is more appropriate I think. Each to their own, just gotta keep your options open to get the best out of life is what I mean.

And the amazing amount of people that say something like that and have not experienced a quality Android tablet for more than 5 minutes is overwhelming.

Anyway on to your other statement, if you set up your Google Account or iCloud properly, surely upgrading a phone is not so hard any more nowadays? If you enter your same account on the new phone it practically sets itself up?

I currently own a Z1 compact and missus uses an iphone 4. I've used both and am quite indifferent. My oldies are quite old, know very little english, and are resistent to change. They are use to apple ios system, and if anyone has seen some of Ronny Chiengs comedy when he talks about trying to fix his parents computer, you will understand why I'm not changing to another system.

I think its probably just for asian parents IMO. =)

If you can tell that to my parents, I'd more than be grateful. They asked me about new functions, changed functions for awhile. This was after importing everything from their old phone. They got used to it and they did like their new phone.

Though, the point I am trying to get across is, people can have problems moving within system, it will be far worse in moving across the system. The cost of learning new things are simply too high (and/or too bothersome) for some people.

  • I say grab one now. With the fall in the AUD against the USD I expect the new ipads will be priced higher. We won't necessarily see much discounting on old models because the new higher prices iPad 3 will make the old ones look cheap. Of course if you want the latest and greatest at any cost then wait.
