Warning for Whoever Took up The NY Times 8 Week Unlimited Offer and Chose to Extend for a Further 8 Weeks

Hi Everyone not sure if this in the right area,

In relation to the offer that was listed at: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/190869

This was 8 weeks for free with an offer within the sign up to further extend this by a further 8 weeks for only 99c.

I emailed them to confirm something as I was charged $1US straight away.

The response I got from them was:

"Thank you for contacting NYTimes.com. We apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced, we understand your concern, and we would be happy to help.

In response to your inquiry, our records indicate that there is currently an active Web + Smartphone subscription associated with the account for the email address you have provided. This subscription was purchased on 08/02/15 at a rate of $1.00 for the first 8 weeks and $16.00 every four weeks thereafter."

So somehow the 8 week trial for free then a further 8 weeks suddenly vanished.

So I signed up under a different email address for the 8 weeks free only. But also before I finished signing up I took screenshots of the "additional" offer that was given to me. I have now not heard back from them for over one week.

On requesting to cancel the subscription I am now getting a run around.

The initial email had "f you did not authorize this purchase, someone has registered using your email address. Please forward this email to [email protected] and write “cancel [email protected]” in the subject line."

On sending to this email address I subsequently received the following response to call them in the USA!

"Thank you for contacting The New York Times.

So anyone that took up the offer of "extending a further 8 weeks be cautious as the system changed the offer" and they are not replying to my screen shots sent over a week ago.

  • If you reply to their email and give them your Aussie number they'll call you and give you a decent offer.

  • yeah I have done that and given them my number

BUT the idea of the deal not being the deal they offered is whats pissing me off more than anything.

Here in Aus bait and switch tactics is illegal!

The original offer link is closed for comments and it seems a couple more signed up thinking they will basically get 16 weeks for only a buck.

  • When I replied with a phone number I did mention and gave them the link to this that the whole interaction is being posted and updated on this website forum!
