ITP The Income Tax Professionals is trying to rip me off, help!

long story short: I was at westfield center when I saw their kiosk mentioning "$0 Upfront we get it 'cost' from your tax return" so I sat there and tried to do personal tax return with them this year, but first I asked them if they could tell me how much tax they or I can refund!

The tax agent told me I can only return $0 tax refund based on her lodgement, So I told her not to lodge my application for now but then she said I have to pay the amount $150 of fee for the tax return?! even though they didn't lodged my application and return anything.

What are your thoughts on this ?

Thanks,

so you sat down get them to do the job for you. Get the job done and decided you'll do it yourself ?

i agree. what a dodgy dude.

      • +19

        two things:

1/ They did the work so they should get paid.

2/ Don't you need to lodge your tax return every year?

      • +4

Better yet why dont you wait for 20 more years when you have even more stuff to "claim tax for", whatever that means.

  • +18

    Uh, you pay them.

So I told her not to lodge my application for now but then she said I have to pay the amount $150 of fee for the tax return?! even though they didn't lodged my application and return anything.

So what if they didn't lodge it. They still completed your tax return.

You are the one trying to rip them off.

      • +20

They still completed it by filling in all the information.

Lodging it is just sending it in.

The financial year ending June 30, 2015 has already passed. Any receipts you get from July 1, 2015 will go on your 2016 tax return. You can't add anything you buy now into the 2015 tax return.

      • +3

The fee is for tax lodgment, but they didn't lodge it !

It's funny you think you can get them to do all the work, then ask them to not lodge it so you don't have to pay the fee. How long did it take you to think of that genius plan?

      • +4

You do realize you have to lodge a tax return every year, don't you?

        • This is what I thought as well! But sis called up ATO and they said she didn't have to lodge one.

        • +5

@Banana: Correct if you earn less than $18,200 you don't have to lodge.

          @iratepirate:

You still have to notify the ATO that there is no requirement to lodge or they will mark it as not lodged.

Also, we get these type of people all the time:

          (1) They sit down and demand to know how much they will get back before the interview.
          (2) They don't understand why they don't get $ for $ back for deductions.
          (3) They tell me that the refund is too small and i should give them more….
          (4) They want ALL their tax back and don't understand why they can't.

Most of the time I try to assess them during the first few minutes so I don't waste my time as they also never want to pay for my time..

          PS

          I don't work for ITP….but the other mob who 'don't miss a thing….:) "

    There is another issue here…
If ITP were to deduct their fees from your return - and your return is $0 - how were they ever going to get paid (except out of your wallet)?

    Interesting first post

  • +14

    Ok, I'll bite…

So OP, whatever in the world made you think that getting your tax return done at a kiosk in a shopping centre might be a good idea???

  • When you say to leave until next year to claim i hope you arent intending to put this year's claims your not lodging into next year's. Apart from some minor adjustments i sometimes tweak in myself anything for this year is strictly for this year.

You're also playing it a fine line between a general consult and getting them to do all the work like any normal customer and had you had a refund you would gave lodged and paid. Agree if you did this then you should pay.

who uses ITP anyway? Cut your loses and run for the hills

    • Yep Op there are only two worthwhile methods for lodging tax as I see it and they put you in one of two categories:
      1. You earn sh1te all so you don't need to lodge or you just get payg and a couple of deductions so unless you are an imbecile you can do it yourself or let them know u don't meet the requirements to lodge that year
      2. You have a complex situation - get a proper accountant to do it and pay the dang money

long story short: so I asked this lawn mower dude to mow my lawn. but when he was almost finished I said not for him to mow the tiny bit in the driveway. lawn mower dude said "ok, that will be $150". I said "oh no buddy, you didn't mow my whole lawn".

What are your thoughts on this ?

    Thanks,

    • +2

The fee is for tax lodgment lawn completion, but they didn't lodge finish mowing it !

    • I'd be like… "$150 TO MOW THE LAWN?!?!"

  • +1

$150 for a tax return at Westfields. Are you kidding me. I get mine done for $120 from an office in privacy. You should have shopped around a little. The lesson here is simple. They should be paid for the work they did, and you should exercise common sense.

    • +1

yep. ITP and those chains arent to be trusted.

I see someone at their home in a granny flat office for $100.

OP wasted someones time and expected to get away with it.

Also having no returns tells me something is really odd. The statement 'leaving it for this year and lodging it next year when I have more to claim makes no sense'… you can only claim for stuff incurred in that year… unless you want to backdate shit, which is fine by me…

It's probably time to pay them so you can leave the kiosk now - it's been 24 hours and I don't think anyone here is going to help you come up with a way to avoid paying for their time and effort :)
