When Should I Buy My Tokyo - Melb Plane Ticket?

Hi everyone.

I have been living in Japan since March this year and have been in talks with my previous boss in Australia about returning to Australia and working for that company again. I need to return to Australia about a week before Christmas which can be quite expensive to travel then. My question is when should I buy my ticket?

At the moment I can buy an economy ticket for about $600-650 which includes meals, 20kg of baggage and a seat with extra leg room. I am pretty happy with that price but would rather travel business class if I could (if it's affordable). Should I buy this economy ticket at this price or wait for another (business class or economy) sale? I have heard that the new Jetstar planes are quite cramped so I am worried about flying economy. I'm also worried that the prices will just go up as it gets closer to Christmas.

Thanks for your help.

  • I'd recommend you find a airline that has a sale at the moment and buy it as soon as possible. Yes, the prices do increase the closer the flight is, so act quick!

  • Got any points balance you could use?

  • Unfortunately no points that I can use. I am fine with paying $650 but it sort of annoys me that I have paid the same amount of money for Business class before. I'm worried that I will book these economy seats and then a business class sale will happen soon after.

Jetstar are kind of a pain in the arse but I have never had a major problem with them (they once over booked my flight but then put me on Qantas business class so I wasn't too upset about that) and they fly directly to Melbourne so it's convenient for me.
