The $1049 figure appears to be one-way. Couldn't find any return flights less than $2k.

    • +4

it is not one way. Plenty of seats available @ $1049. Just need to look within the travel period for the sale.

Okay, tried to edit my comment.

Note that some flights are on AA metal with QF codeshare. Not nice in economy with ten across on a 777

    • +2

What is AA metal and ten across?

      • +9

I would think its is American Airlines with a 3 4 3 seating configuration from left to right……I could be incorrect.

        • Correct you are.

If you have the flight numbers use seatguru:

    http://www.seatguru.com/

    • I find their information to often be inaccurate.

      • Does require a bit of detective work when there are multiple versions of the same plane. You can usually find out by matching the row numbers in the select seat option of your booking with the maps on seat guru.

Having said that. Airlines substitute/switch planes all the time.

  • I will never fly Qantas again. Just came back from Hong Kong and had 3 flights cancelled in a row trying to get back to Sydney. The only way I could get back was to get on flight to Brisbane then get on another flight to Sydney.

    • What was the reason for cancellation, did they explain?

      • +1

No explanation for cancelling flights. The weird thing all the flights going to melbourne and brisbane where all ok.

        • +1

I've had this happen also from Hong Kong. I ended up going via Melbourne and only then after I screamed for 30 mins was I given this alternative. Qantas seem stretched with the fleet at max capacity since they removed the A380 from the route and now only have A330's flying.

    • -4

Travelled with Etihad / Emirates for past 20yrs. Never had a cancellation.

    • +2

QF128? Very irritating! Flew my whole company premium ec so they could sleep overnight coming back home. Canceled flight, but at least we got into BNE. All downgraded to economy, on an ancient crappy 330, even tho plenty of spare seats in bus.

Apparently it was something with the aux power unit on the 747. Or that's what they said on the BNE flight.

      • Yes that was the flight.

      • Downgraded to economy? Did you get a refund??

        • I've asked the question. Doubtful it will be much though, then again it was for 6 people, so even a couple of $100 will add up

  • Is the A380-800 better than the 747-400 or much of a muchness?

I've flown on an A380 before and it was fine, just wanna know if the 747 is any better or worse as I have the option for both but $100 more for the A380 on the return leg

    • A380 is better, try to get the upper deck seat (2-3-2).

      • Thanks mate, I went with the A380 to SYD>LAX and 777-300 LAX>SYD to save $194

        • +1

777 will be an American Airlines Flight. Qantas code shared as Qantas doesnt have any of their own 777's

      • Aren't they more expensive? Or are they premium economy? I tried looking for seats there the last time but couldn't select any!

        • Well, Malaysia Airlines has economy class on both lower and upper deck. Might be different for other airlines, best is to look it up on http://www.seatguru.com/

        • @bargainaus: You're right, and Qantas does too - a tiny pocket of economy seats on the upper deck behind PE. Pre-book them because they're a better experience than the lower deck. I've heard you're better off booking in the lower deck on the Dallas-Sydney route though because they leave 100 or so seats vacant due to fuel concerns

    Cheaper at bestjet.com $979

If I had that much money to spare, I'd chuck my mum on a plane to Dallas; she's always wanted to see Gracelands. D:

What is it with all the deals to Dallas recently? Is it due to the recent news about [shit movie] Dallas Buyers Club? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3197545/Illegal-down…

    • +4

      Debbie!

    • Dallas is one of the biggest hubs in the US, Qantas flies there as it's the best option to fly onward to east coast destinations

    Dallas Flyers Club.

I would absolutely avoid the AA 777 if possible. The difference in "soft product" - service, food, booze - is far superior on Qantas than AA. AA's hard product - seats - is fine, but Qantas is the better experience overall.

    • I heard this as well from a mate but I was intrigued by the Main Cabin Extra seats so lets see how it goes.
Also in my experience Qantas is one of the worst in terms of service, food, booze so I will be disappointed if AA is even crappier!

Once in Dallas checkout the massive Grapevine shopping centre 10mins from airport, we purchased a fantastic real leather jacket for $49 and a large well made suitcase for $75.

Is this for flying at Christmas time too?

    • Nope. You'll find that Christmas flights are generally quite expensive since it's a peak time for travel, and don't go on sale very frequently.

      • Damn yeah i'd expect that, thanks anyway mate.

        • Take the Santa Express maybe?

  • Not too sure how a Datsun 1200 is representative of the USA, LA or Dallas.

  • Ah bugger, typical to come a few weeks after i have bought flights through Dallas with Qantas

The only thing that softens it a bit is that the flights just before Thanksgiving arent as low as $1049, so its only $500ish more. :(

  • United have some cheaper SFO flights during the same time period, for example MEL to SFO depart 14th January return 8th February for $1056: http://goo.gl/flights/aGXw
