Qantas FF OR Flybuys. Which Is Better? Both?

I have both CBA Awards program card and an ANZ Platinum with QFF.

Awards program gives benefits of purchasing any flights including discount airlines from flight centre (lowest airfare guaranteed)
QFF is limited to flights within the QFF program.

Woolies seem to be linked with Qantas program.
Coles with Flybuys.

What system/ technique should we be using to maximize points?
Breakdown of value of points?
Benefits of having both?
Expiry dates/ roll over of points?
Group points from one member to another?

I have been told there are much to be saved on flights if used correctly.

Can any experienced flyers/ oz-bargainers comment and share knowledge/ experiences?

Thanks

    both

  • From memory of my previous transaction:

60000 CBA Award points changed to $266 flight centre credit.
About 230points per $1 at flight center.

    Can someone correct me?
Also, anyone comment on qantas point $value

  • Do a search within the site, you would find answer. In terms of points value,QFF>VFF>FBS.

  • If you are planning to only use the points for flights, then QFF points get you better value per point.

If you want to use Flybuys for travel expenses, you are limited to buying flights from Webjet. There are many fees and other issues involved with this and you get less value per point compared to QFF point redemptions. There are other partners for accomodation and car rental where you can use flybuys points.

The fligt centre redemptionin CBA rewards of 230 points per $1 is worse than the redemtion rate for Coles vouchers ($100) unless the redemption went up in the last few months. Last year the $100 Coles vouchers could be redeemed for less than 20,000 points. There is a way to convert CBA rewards points to QFF points but it's not a 1to1 conversion rate and there is a yearly fee to sweep the points to QFF.

If you are using points to save money on groceries you save more money with Flybuys, by converting points to flybuys dollars. One flybuys point is worth less than 1 QFF point in terms of grocery gift card conversion or flybuys dollars, however it is much, much easier to get flybuys bonus and base points than it is to get QFF bonus and base points by using the relevant supermarkets. As a result you earn more points using Flybuys for spending less money.

  • Flight redemption value really comes down to where you live.

For example my wife wanted to fly for a weekend from Canberra to Brisbane. The price was (I kid you not) $700 return. I booked her on flights using QFF points for 16,000 points + $98 or $0.0375. Even bigger value would have been sending her business which worked out to be about (a ridiculous) $2600 return or $0.0781 per point (less the $98) you have to pay.

If she had flown that same weekend from Sydney, the price would have been $310 return or $0.0131 per point.

Similarly, if I flew from Canberra to Sydney the price would be about the same as her Sydney to Brisbane flight. In which case I would be less likely to use points.

With Flybuys, you convert points into vouchers worth $. If you buy a voucher with $X it will cost you Y points. So for me QFF is clearly the winner but as mentioned it really comes down to where you're flying from and to.
