how can we get the beta otherwise? (my son wants to play on pc vs ps4 but I tried to explain how many cheaters and hax on pc and lack of players. I am hoping a cheap beta might put him off)

Don't bother with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare if you are interested in multiplayer as it's all match making and quite dead on the PC.
Do you think it will be the same for Black ops 3 on PC?
I bought ghosts and it was real bad on pc and ps4 had at least 10 times more people playing
MW2 is unplayable due to hax
