Cairns to Cape Tribulation or Fitzroy Island

Hi There

I'm travelling to Cairns for 4 days. I've booked other tours(rafting, hot air balloon, green island, outer reef and Kuranda). I have a day (till 5 pm - as i have a flight at 7pm) free and just wondering which one to chose: Fitzroy island or Cape Tribulation(Daintree rainforest).

My wife and I are non-swimmers… not sure if Fitzroy has any activities for non-swimmers at all.
Also, If i hire a car and drive from Cairns till Cape Tribulation…Are the roads really dirty ? - Will there be any problems with hire car companies ?

Cape Trib is nice. Went there years ago (more than 10) and was in a ford falcon, did it easy. My guess is the roads are even better now.

  • Did the trip last weekend - roads are sealed up to Cape Tribulation (unsealed beyond). Some of the car parks are gravel but should have troubles with the car being dirty.

There are cruises along the Daintree and some nice walks/lookouts along the way to Cape Tribulation.

How long did it take for you to reach cape tribulation from Cairns city ?
Also, did you do the jungle surfing ?

  • It takes about 2.5 hours in total of driving time each way (including the ferry across the Daintree). Possibly a bit less depending on how fast you travel but its easy to get stuck behind slower cars. The ferry is about half way.

Didn't do the Jungle Surfing (although it looked interesting)

when I was there last time there was a girl selling bananas from a stall on the northside. best bananas I've ever eaten.

  • Both are pretty good. Just came back from Cairns today and did both. Plus heaps of other things too.

To be honest it may be sufficient to go to Port Douglas rather than all the way to Cape trib.

If you want rainforest then just go to Kuranda or crystal cascades.

Bahana Gorge (3km walk), The Boulders and Josephine Falls are good for rainforest.

    • did you self drive ?

      • Basically. But our mate in Cairns took us in his car.

    • is the jungle surf worth it for the money, or are there better things..

      • Surf? There's no surf in North Queensland except when there's a cyclone.

  • I'd recommend the Daintree.
Fitzroy has a few hikes around the island you can go up to the light house or nudey beach, there's a glass bottom boat that'll take you out to view some of the sea life as well as kayak hire around the island. To be honest though if you're both non swimmers there really isn't much need to visit both islands.

Daintree is always beautiful and (if you're into that sort of thing) you can stop by for a breakfast with the birds at Port Douglas on the way. If your free day happens to be a Sunday there is local markets by the water at Port Douglas that are a big hit with locals and tourists.

Also, just a heads up the recommended Behana Gorge, Boulders and Josephine Falls are in the opposite direction of Port Douglas/Cape Tribe :)

    • how long do u think will take for a trip from cairns to boulders and water falls ?

  • Fitzroy Island is a little boring especially if you don't swim
