  Just a quick word of warning as I made this trip with this airline a couple of years ago.

  When you are booking you flight please watch out for a hidden internal flight, either from Ho Chi to Hanoi or on the way back Hanoi to Ho Chi. This will be a domestic flight and you will need some kind of visa (costing roughly $75). I got caught out by this but put it back on the travel agent as they did no specify this internal flight. The booking just said Hanoi - Sydney. When in fact it was Hanoi-Ho Chi-Sydney.

  Plus there was some long stopovers and there is very little to do in the Ho Chi or Hanoi airport. Add to this Ho Chi business class lounge is poor.

    I used Vietnam Airlines 2 years ago from Melbourne to Frankfurt and it was a fairly pleasent flight with good service. I also had the long stop over on the way back in Ho Chi Minh City … so we just combined this with a 1 week stop over in Vietnam to avoid the long stop - as the flight was super cheap at that time (a bit under AU$1100) we had the money left over for an extra week of holiday :-). Good price … but not the best flight.

    Etihad had a special on earlier this year which also gave you around $1100 Melbourne - Europe … but a more direct flight with hardly any stopover time.

    VN Airlines have pretty good return business class fares from Sydney to Europe (usually around the $4000 mark). Better value still if you make the connecting flight from Ho Chi Minh - Paris on Air France and Paris - HCMC on return (you still travel on a VN ticket but in a superior business class cabin).

  Vietnam Airlines were great flying from MEL-LGW. Couldn't fault them and it was probably the best food that I have tasted on any flights :)
