Dont know if anyone mentioned. Radio last week was buzzing with news that ATO would send hundreds of officials all over the world on first class flights to "educate" overseas vendors of this world.

    My taxes hard at work!

    • Another disgraceful waste of money by an unaccountable government. They are like the mafia - trying to shake down corporations for more money.

  • Because Tony abbot is not good at science and they dont have a science minister in their party, Tony abbot is rounding the value of Pi to 3.0 so foreign rockets in Australian air space will malfunction and crash down in the desert. He is going to salvage and sell it on the black market to get us some revenue. He is also thinking of swapping carbon atomic number with gold and selling all the coal at gold's price to make us rich

  • Let start spamming Harvey Norman facebook page !@!!!!1!

This liberal gov is destroying Australia. Needs to be voted out soon. In comparison the Howard government was much better even though they did have issues as well but at least I don't think they would have changed NBN decision and this stupid GST on overseas purchases

Sorry to disappoint Labor supporters (who seek every opportunity to rubbish Abbott) but Bill Shorten is not going to be the next messiah.

As proven in the recent senate passing of anti-piracy laws both major parties are a bunch of morons. The online GST will pass the senate with no hassles.

    The winners:
    The Murdoch's, The Harvey's / Woolworths & Wesfarmers / State governments

    The losers:
Everyday Australians who will continue to fund wasteful spending like Daniel Andrews paying 100s of millions in compensation for cancelling the East West Link with nothing but pride to show for it.

    • Yep this 2 party thing is BS.

      • I hate Abbott with a passion… but I'm not voting Labour because I like them. I just hate them less.
Can't do anything about this 2 party crapfest, but I can pick the worse of two evils.

But what's the solution? There's some talented people in politics who would make great leaders, but will never get the chance.

    • The East West Link was a dud tollway clouded in secrecy by an untrustworthy Liberal government (what a surprise).

The Liberals didn't even release the business case before the election. A horrible party that cares more about their own interests and protecting the rich.

Victoria dodged a bullet getting rid of them and hopefully Australia will do the same to Abbott or health and education will get much worse.

  • I have an automated online business where I purchase stock overseas. This combined with the ridiculous price increase of Australia post stanps means I am going to make slit less money unless I increase the price of my items.

I really hope oversea sellers have to increase their price more in order to make a profit

  • But I guess now we can claim TRS refunds on the imported gear. Do you think this will work? I know they require an ABN to process TRS.

    • well, it won't. at least in theory, as overseas seller won't have ABN.

  • Having import tax on overseas purchases is not uncommon in many countries, maybe GST is not the right term to use here. The purpose of it is to keep the local businesses more competitive with the high dollar. What is wrong here is that this is too late an implementation to have a positive effect. Putting money into tax does not help the local manufacturers improve their products and services, because too many businesses have already long gone down the road of outsourcing instead of improving what they have here. Local quality is therefore low and will stay low. 10% isn't enough to get people to buy local. We are still over-reliant on our natural resources.

My question though is if no tax is imposed, how do we improve local goods quality and competitiveness? Sure we can keep buying from Amazon and eBay, but are we just going to be resellers? Do we just give up and move out of the country?

      To solve the issue…

Send one million letters from overseas mark them as value of $1000, send them to Joe Hockey's postal address. They will pay the fee and duties and thus creating jobs for TEAM AUSTRALIA

The 'leveling of the playing field' we keep hearing is just a smokescreen. Aussie businesses aren't competitive, and it's not solely due to the overhead of physical stores; they can't even compete against international chains like H&M, Uniqlo or Sephora which do have storefronts. Mismanaged local retailers aren't going fix themselves just because imports are taxed, because they'd still be more expensive. The import GST isn't going to help businesses one bit, it's just another source of revenue for the government which should instead be increasing corporate taxes, not nickel and diming ordinary people.

No probs, you can have Australia back and pay the Carbon Tax instead.

      Swings and merry go rounds.

I'm voting LABOR so I can get another free $1000 handout to help turn this country around. Yehaa!

Liberal and Labor are both as bad as each other these days.

i've definitely learnt the real way to win is to become an MP, then retire on a nice package…

        • Not just the package. Property development is where the big $ is.

  • why bother bring in the NBN, they've pretty much block any reason why anyone would use the internet.
    downloading movies = gone
    shopping online = gone
    what's next p0rn? = http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-12-31/news…

Lol, Its interesting to note though.
Retail industry not doing anything to fix their own mess but to simply blame overseas products for their demise.

Online Shopping will get more expensive, however funny enough, people will still buy from overseas as it will still be cheaper than buying in Australia.

I remember the last few purchases I got from overseas, they were all pretty much 50% of what I would have paid for in Australia.
Even if they add their stupid taxes, it actually won't change much because it will still be cheaper.

If businesses stopped ripping off their fellow Australians, I'm sure they will get more business!

Bloody Liberal voters, who thought Abutt was a great idea, the prime minister who doesn't have its on opinion other than to simply take Labor opinions and reverse them… Labor wasn't well managed, however at least they came up with their own policies.

Remember the person sitting at the front of your uni lecture class who would always ask those stupid questions on every single power point slide…. Yes thats Mr. Abutt… lol!

"There will be no new taxes under an Abbott Government" < < < ha … yeh remember that ???

How corrupt is this government?, federal & state. It seems like they're shoving dollars in one pocket and yuan in the other.

lol, now abbott wants to put GST on healthcare.

  • +1

This will be known as the GHT, ie the Gerry Harvey Tax.

  • this country deserved Tony Abbot and labour party for a while, so now those stupid people who wont look back to the past will understand again what these pigs really are.

  • Maybe there's a good chance Labor will get in before 2017 and overturn this shit.

  • I propose a new political party.

    OZBParty.

Its not like we can do any worse

  • Loophole? get sellers to send as gifts and send invoice separate from item

    • What's the loophole? There's no concession for gifts.

      • that the point, before I used to buy a lot of electronic from America over $1000, I would ask them to wrap up my items and marked it as gifts and send invoice to my email or work place(different address). :) no tax.

        • Putting the moral issues aside (tax evasion yaddi yadda), if you get caught doing that, it can cause a lot of headaches and you probably will get fined for it (though I guess whether they check it thoroughly would matter, but if they introduce GST on every single good (which seems to be what Hockey wants to do), wouldn't they check every single good for taxing purposes?).

          If I bring UK case:

If the value of the gifts in the consignment is greater than £40 (€45, or equivalent in local currency), then:
VAT is payable in all cases.
          Duty will be payable unless:
the value of the gifts in the consignment (not including shipping and insurance costs) is less than £135 (€150, or equivalent in local currency) or the duty amount payable is less than £9 (€10, or equivalent in local currency).

A flat duty rate of 2.5% applies if:
the value of the gifts in the consignment is less than £630 (€700, or equivalent in local currency) AND it is to your benefit.
Otherwise the normal duty rate applies.

        • But there's no concession for gifts, so it marking them so is irrelevant.

If the goods come in without a declared value (or a questionable value), Customs will determine a value. However, due to the amount of goods coming in, Customs don't have the resources to chase up all items.

        • @Oversimplified: That only work mostly on ebay or amazon. But if you buy it from a store, and the store decide to send you that gift, how would the gov prove it. Even now items over 1000 you still can get away with it. such example even on amazon. send it to address in US (some state don't have tax) then they repackage it send it to aust as a gifts with a card eg. Happy birthday John. We missed you so much over here blah blah blah

  • You cant stop globalizing trends! and now the government start to do it… haha, handshake with international retailers to pressure their own citizens. What if these retailers wont agree to pay?

    • The way government control and effect economy of free market is so WRONG, it wont fair to hard honest workers, who working hard only to find out that they are being cheated by their own government!
Look at china, they continue to lower their money value (yuan), to keep the price of their goods lower and lower. Look like we will follow china soon?
