  • I'm assuming there is some newer model out.

  • $22.42 cashback too ;)

  • If this had built in HRM i would be sold. great price still, looks like an awesome watch.

Apparently from what I've read, the watches with heart rate monitors (no idea what the technology is called) are the least accurate compared to other forms of HRM (such as the ones you put around your chest). I'm pretty tired, so excuse the vague information in regarding to names.

I've got an old garmin forerunner 610, and I just use my wahoo tickr around my chest and it connects to that. Works pretty well, the only downside sometimes the strap can be a tad annoying.

      • Yeah I know what your saying is right. I just hoped they improved the technology by now. It's a hassle having to carry around and wear the chest HRM.

think what you're referring to is the optical hrm (it has some optic thing underneath the watch which takes your heart rate). like you said, it isn't as accurate as having it on the chest strap.
there is a new FR225 (i think) which has this technology, but as expected - it's not as good as having the chest strap

      • The Tom Tom Runner Cardio uses the optical wrist HRM technology and is very accurate according to reviews (check out dcrainmaker), even for high intensity work, and even during a swim apparently. That one is worth a look if the convenience of no chest is important.

I have a Garmin 225, but I find the HRM in the watch isn't very accurate. I get readings of 200+ bpm, while i'm jogging and I know it would be sitting around 140-150 bpm around that speed. my maximum heart rate should be around 185bpm at my age.

      Chest straps
      + more accurate reading
      - annoying if the strap slides down or drops off your chest.

      HRM built into watch
+ don't have to wear a chest strap
      - not very accurate readings

      • I've had the same experience - I just picked up the Garmin 225 week before last and the heart rate readings are all over the place - either wildly inconsistent and too low on the outside of my wrist/forearm (jumping between 120-145bpm, when it should be steady between 155-170bpm), or consistently reading about 10-20bpm too high if I move it inside my wrist (reading 180-200bpm when it should be 165-175, maybe 180bpm peak). Seeing as I picked this watch because I wanted to start HR zone training, it's not much use to me.

Think I will return it and pick this offer up instead as I was already toying with the idea of getting a HRM to go with the 225. I'd eyed up the 620 when making my purchase but chose the 225 for the slightly lower price point and convenience.

  • Does this model have a replacement wristband?
I have an FR210 with broken wristband and there is no replacement. Its now a running hand watch.

Got this watch last year for about $400 have been using it for most of my runs - great running watch, review here DC Rainmaker

  • Way more popular and stylish than the unwanted iwatch.

  • Very tempting but in DC rainmakers review of the Vivoactive he writes this.
The biggest recommendation I would make though is that I wouldn’t buy either of the FR220 or FR620 these days. I just see them as dead-end watches without Connect IQ on them. Everything within the company will be focused on Connect IQ and the various extensions it supports. So while the Vivoactive might be slightly less featured than the FR220/FR620 in certain areas, I’d personally wait for Connect IQ to fill those gaps instead. But…that’s just my two cents.

IQ connect only came out this year so the compatible range is very limited. The features are already good on the 620 so getting add on widgets and apps shouldn't be a deal breaker. I guess it comes down to whether u want a premium older model watch (620) at a discount or a newer equivalent at a higher cost.

From recent comments Ray seems to have given up on Garmin Connect (being what it could/should be) so his original comments may carry less weight now. It's a decent watch, with decent features at a very decent price. There may be a replacement announced at Eurobike/Interbike with optical HRM but if this one does what you need in a running watch right now……

    • Garmin connect still works for recording the workout. You can then use endomundo to get data from garmin connect.

  • My opinion as a personal trainer who's competed in many multi-sport events is that Garmin makes some pretty kickass sport watches. The forerunner series in general is excellent for running, although I find them too specialised as that they're not suitable even for using in the gym as a timer.

I've got a Garmin Fenix 3 which I find much more versatile (and expensive)

Did not like my ex girlfriend's forerunner 220 at all because it was so running focused that it had 1 setting- run. No timer/stopwatch or any other function.

  • I wish Rebel had a click and collect option.
Had to pay $10 delivery - so my cashback was halved.

    • There's a banner saying free shipping to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane metro. I'm on Gold Coast and it gave me free shipping. If you had a Rebel near by you should have gone in store, used rebel membership (which is free if you dont have one) and get 5% discount.

    I ordered a Garmin 920xt yesterday from 99Bikes.com $499 w/ HRM + 4% cashrewards + 20off200 promo code

20off200 promo code excludes garmin products but you have to spend more than $200 in your purchess. I bought some riding gloves, but you could buy something cheaper like a $2 tyre lever.

Also Amart all sports has 20% off storewide.

    Amart sports 20% off sale
Garmin 225 for $311.20 ($77.80 off) (HRM built into watch)
Garmin 620 for $399.20 (100 off aprox) (HRM chest strap) rebels is cheaper for 620
Garmin 910 for $399.20 ($100 off aprox) (HRM chest strap)
Garmin 920 for $479.20 ($120 off aprox) (HRM chest strap)

    edit - fixed up links.

    • Thanks for the heads up Little Wog. BTW, the cashback has now increased to 8%. I hope Cashrewards pays up.

  • Thanks Yimp. Picked up one from my local Rebel.

    • Hi, Did it come with the HRM-Run strap? Or is that a separate purchase?

      • +1

It came with HRM and chest strap if that is what you mean.

        • Thanks very much! That's what I was wondering. (apparently, there's a version without the HRM strap)

  • I need a replacement USB cable for my Forerunner 220, any ideas to not pay $30 - $50? :<

    • Contact Garmin, you may be able to sweet talk them into sending you a free replacement USB docker.

      • Worth a try, cheers

  • New Garmin Forerunner Has Someone Else's Data on It

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208601

    • Yep ^^ that was me. Rebel was no help - asking me to drive to a store over an hour away to exchange it for a new one. I ended up going in to my local store (which didn't have any 620s in stock) got a full refund then went straight to Amart Sports and bought it for the same sale price as Rebel.

I've been a Forerunner user for a long. long time - I dislike them but I need them for training and I don't have time to learn how to use a new brand (the Suunto sounds good). The 220 hasn't started well. Last night I went out for a run (no tall buildings or trees to block GPS) and (according to the data) I am a now a female world record holder. The last '10k' were run in 25 minutes. One of my 1k splits was done in 1:25.

I went back to my Forerunner 410 for this morning's session because I didn't want to deal with it not working again. I'm about to go try the 220 again now. If it plays up again, it's going back.

  • Garmin vs. smartphone app, which one has more accurate GPS tracking?

    • +1

The 620 is going to be more accurate as I think it takes more readings. In saying that I still use a smartphone and it's pretty spot on for distance. If you go to Runkeeper website you can map out a run and it will tell you the distance. Do this and see how it compares to you actually running that path.
I'd say if you wanted to run an actual competitive race then a smartphone may not be right for you.
The other thing is that if you are after current speed or pace then smartphone apps aren't too great as the fluctuate quite a lot.
I use a footpod from an older garmin forerunner for this specific reason. My phone still tracks the path via GPS and plays my music.
I was so close to getting one of these but decided to give it a miss and wait until a smartwatch like the Vivoactive or the Sony Smart watch fits my needs.
The perfect Smartwatch for me is a pebble/Garmin cross. The Vivoactive doesn't quite get there yet.

      • Thank you for sharing your experience. Totally agreed that the pace on my app fluctuates quite a bit (my biggest gripe). Other than that I'm quite happy with apps.
