    Lego has always been expensive. Licensed sets like Simpsons and Star Wars have a premium too

    And definitely, especially if you still have instructions or boxes

    Depends what sets you have.
    Pieces (used) aren't worth a lot unless you have the box and instructions in mint condition, and even then it's only certain sets that are worth something.
    Loose LEGO is worth about $10/kg if you clean it up first.

    Now recent sets or theme sets (star wars, harry potter etc) can easily be advertised for 2-3x the original price. Why people would actually pay this I don't know, as except for a few sets (usually the really big ones like 10179) get remade and rereleased every 3-5 years anyway. (sold for 1-2, then remade 1-2 years later).
    Just look at things like the X-wing, Slave I etc.

    Depends on the set. I've got a grand carousel set in 2010 back for around US$250. it's now work US$4000+ on amazon.
