They were recalled in the US for being a suffocation risk. http://www.essentialkids.com.au/forums/index.php?/topic/7482…

    • A lot of kids grew up in these, I myself included. Some people say that the baby will be dependent on the hammock to fall asleep. Yes it's true but they are easy to train, a few days of crying and determination will switch them over to a cot when they are under 1 year old. Very useful product if you are having a hard time putting the little one to sleep.

For all 3 of our kids, we borrowed a bassinet for the first 4-8 weeks of each bub and they slept in our room. After that they moved to a cot - a white wooden Childcare branded one from Target with the mattress from Target as well. It's been great - has lasted all 3 kids and it's about to be turned into a toddler bed for our third.

      yep, fantastic.

OP, the first is exciting but I can just say dont get carried away buying up at a baby shop. and dont buy crazy priced items, most are used a short time only.

  • We used the cot in this travel system for each of our two kids when sleeping. It was handy when moving between rooms and to take to friend/family homes without much fuss. When the first hit 3-4 months we moved him into a normal wooden cot that we got second hand. The cot had a side that could be moved up and down (didn't use this much) and also a base that also moved up and down depending on the age of the child. He is just over two years and now in a normal single bed. The second is nearing four months and just about to be moved into the cot. Hope it helps.

  • We used a bassinet until they don't fit (5-6 months) and then a Boori cot (big size so will fit until 3-4 years old). Check gumtree or local buy sell facebook page for second hand ones which mostly may only be used for one child.

    • Bassinet is best as they feel more secure in a tight space. Some prams comes with bassinets are perfect for newborns. However, not all babies are like so YMMW.

Seriously, just upgrade to a king bed! Forget the cot. The only way you will ever get any sleep is to pop your Bub in next to you.

    • its against SIDS recommendations and dangerous!

  • We went for an expensive cot. Which was a waste of money. I will say though go for a large size cot not a standard like you would find in target etc. bigger does keep them in there a little longer.
We used a bassinet initially cause when you put a teeny tiny baby into a huge cot they look lost. The bassinet seems more cosy. But with another I would remove the side off a cot and push it against our bed so it works like a co sleeper.

  • sleep with bub in bed is against SIDS recommendation
we just had a bub, we decided to get a fancy round cot - not a good idea as all bedding u can purchase (from sherdian and baby stores) are usually for rectangle ones or bassents! you have to either get there branded expensive ones or make do with rectangle ones (that's what we did)

also check the size and height of the cots, the cot we got (cocoon) is actually quite low (even at baby stage) which does make it difficult to lift the baby in and out all the time

some cots you can remove the side panel making it easier to put the baby in and out

also consider whether you will have more kids
if not, you can get ones which convert all the way to a single bed
if you are having more, its cheaper to buy for the different stages separately (i.e bassent, cot, single bed)

    don't scaremonger

    they were NOT recalled

"Tragically in late 2009 we have assisted in the investigation into two infant fatalities in the USA. In both cases there is irrefutable evidence that the Hammock has been assembled and used incorrectly. "

  • Use a bassinet for the first few months however newborns are noisy sleepers. Our 3 week old did start sleeping in his bassinet in our room but we kicked him out the other night as it was impossible to even get 2hours sleep. He now sleeps in the bassinet about 5meters outside the bedroom door where we can hear him cry or when he starts getting very fussy but we can still get an ok sleep.

We have a 3in 1 cot/toddler bed for when he grows out of the bassinet.

  • We bought a second hand cot, and new mattress from Baby Bunnings.
    Ikea has baby cots too.
