Is This The Ultimate in Being Cheap, When Travelling

I am in a situation where my wife can fly for free from gold coast to Sydney return on labor day weekend. for me to join her will be ~ $500….total rip off.

so i suggested i fly from ballina airport 100km south for $250 return. Thus i drop her off, the continue to my airport… we both depart and land roughly the same time.

is this being extremely cheap, ie saving $250 minus petrol but flying seperatly…

anyone else done this, in their life of being cheap.

  • Sounds reasonable to me. $250 is a fair saving and 100km is not that far (I drove from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast for my flight to Singapore - that's about 200km each way.) Saved about $500 on flying from Brisbane return though!

    • id have done the same, only 100kms extra each way, thats $20 in fuel really…

  • Well you do end up saving but with car travel (both ways), then airport parking, then car depreciation etc you'd be saving a lot less.

    • airport coolongatta is on the way to airport Balline
… and parking at airport Ballina is cheaper so sort of works out nicely… only flaw is double the chances of a delay, and well being apart sucks, but no big deal.

      • being apart sucks, but no big deal.

Oh really? Come home and sleep on the couch tonight.

  • How much checked luggage allowed?
    How much do you weigh?

    • no checked luggage, i weigh alot, u need a specific amount…

Depending on the wife some people would pay $250 to spend a couple of ours away from the wife!

    • spend a couple of ours away from the wife!

Was that "ours" a freudian slip or just a typo?

Typo. I actually love my partner and would pay to spend more time with her.
But I know several people who would spend $500 just to spend a flight away from their wife.

I'm on the Jetstar website and they have OOL-SYD return for $248 for your dates (leaving 02 Oct 7am - return 05 Oct 6am).

    • yes thanks, need to leave late monday and early saturday.. still depressing paying $250 to fly to sydney when im sure tiger can get me there for 39 or jetstar 69 any other weekend

  • We do this sort of thing all the time.

I live in Canberra and we fly to Brissy or Adelaide every so often. It's cheaper to get a $15 bus ticket to Sydney and fly from Sydney for about $300 return then fly from Canberra which usually costs $600-700 return.

    • yeh its no brainer sucks, flying to/from canberra

  • get a amex edge card for $195 and use the free domestic ticket … save even more !

  • $250 you can spend on your wife.
