Why Is Woolworths Losing Market Share?

I shop most of the time at Coles 5 mins from my home. I like their loyalty fly buys program, there is a Coles express near my work where I can use my 4c docket, i have a Coles MasterCard and Coles home, car, life insurance and quadriple my fly buy points.
Liquor land in my opinion is catching up with danmurphys
Bunnings trounces masters
Kmart smashes bigw.
For me the inconvenience of location of woolworths, caltex and poorly designed everyday reward program lead to its slow demise.
That is why in my opinion woolworths is falling behind. Newish player aldi is expanding. Lidl is coming. What do you think?

Well ozbargainers have spoken. Wow management if you are reading, listen to your customers and try to improve on the following:
- your edr sucks. No one wants to accumulate points after $30. Make it 1 point per dollar from 1st dollar you spend.
Do 2000 pts for $10 off like your rival and dump your qff .
- your marketing sucks. No one likes scantily clad pom singing ridiculous song . Get a bunch of weirdos like your rival and start playing some catchy songs. Get yourself aligned with masterchef, mkr etc.
- your website sucks, your drivers are always late. Just fire those clowns and get some decent drivers and web designers.
-your self serve checkout terminals suck. They are slow unresponsive poorly layout.
-your masters suck. They are over staffed with idiots that are clueless about your products.
-your response to your customers suck . We want gluten free, halal, kosher varieties not just cheap home brand stuff that we can get at aldi.
The only thing that works for you is dan murphys and your animal cards

    Lets see

    • Bad online site, rarely ever go there anymore
    • Obvious lack of ground staff, often specials aren't labeled, always a pleasant surprise to find a discounted item on my receipt after I bought it.
      • In addition to this, they've started over the last year or so start to have serious sales to contend with Coles, but this is not conveyed properly as stores(I've been to multiple stores across Sydney) as specials aren't always labeled… at the same time anything not on special is a rip off. So Woolworths only worth going for "known" specials. Coles "everyday" shopping "feels" cheaper, I don't "feel" ripped off. Those "basket guides" are based on family buys, as a single person, the difference "feels" much bigger.
    • serious lack of cashiers all times, peak is disastrous… lack of and multiple process of going through self serve (ie do you have a EDR card) means getting out becomes intolerable. They got away with this in the past, as there was no real alternative, Coles better service and more self serve means there is an alternative now.
  • I actually prefer Woolworths. I doubt location generally is a huge factor nation wide, some people will be closer to one store, some closer to another. I'm sure it levels out.

As for self service, I by far and away prefer Woolworths. Our local Coles throws a hissy fit if you add ANY extra weight to the baggage area which requires a staff member to unlock the terminal to resolve. Woolworths terminals where we shop doesn't care and is far more forgiving. It'd be ok if I wasn't buying things elsewhere, but if you already have four bags before walking into Coles then it'd be nice to be able to stick them in the bagging tray without the machine having a heart attack, and that's far preferable to cluttering the shared walkway in the self checkout area. This alone has seen me go to woollies at times.

The EDR scheme need to be updated and the $30 min spend removed. It's no good for small families or other demographics that are best served by multiple small shops a week vs one big outing. Very rarely do I go much above $30. In terms of rewards, I actually like the fact EDR links to my Qantas card, just that $30 limit is a barrier.

Otherwise I find both fairly similar.

  • i was at coles today, and they DON'T price match anymore!

  • New rewards programme launched: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216565

  • This really surprises me - I would of thought Woolworths was far superior than Coles ! I'd rather shop at Woolies and their online shopping is way better.

  • Don't understand the comment about self serve checkouts… isn't it the Coles ones that require you to put items down in certain spot before the stupid thing will allow you to continue?

    • WW self-checkouts are so slow and stupid, you have to put items on a certain spot otherwise they scream at you.

  • While I like Woolies I am a shift worker. Coles is open til midnight and I have a midnight Kmart and a 24/7 Kmart just down the road as well… now you tell me which place I would visit on an evening when I finish work at 10pm?

  • location. masters is so much nicer than bunnings but bugger it if i have to jump onto the highway for 30mins to head to the nearest one.

    same goes for big w.

  • Coles have way better specials. Always costs me more to shop at Woolworths than it does Coles. Pluses are they actually stock Redwins Body Wash but its usually always sold out. They did have these awesome salmon and avocado sushi rolls for $3.50 ahh now they dont. Actually Coles used to have roast beef with the hot roast chickens bring that in that was awesome. Or if they have something I really want on special or if they give me those $10 off a $40 shop deals cos I havent been there in ages, then Ill shop there otherwise NOPE!
