Haggling at Optometrist

Need some new glasses for work. I'm curious to know what the markup is for a pair of designer frames, and lenses? I have my eyes tested already. How easy is it to haggle a discount if it is possible at all?

I have no probs getting a bargain at a dept store like JB Hifi, but am unsure about negotiating with the dispensers.

You'll just have to try and see

  • huge markup.
Just ask, or even buy online for cheaper. visiondirect are pretty good (wife got script lens in rayban sunnies for less than just raybans here.

    • I tried visiondirect… After two attempted orders and 3 months of waiting for a particular style/brand I've had enough so trying a normal retailer.

      • fair enough. we bought 18 months ago and everthing was fine.

Specsavers wouldn't be the first place I go to for glasses.

There is a reason why optometrists work within a glasses store and it certainly not for your convenience nor benefit. Their business model works on the principle that 99.99% of all those receiving eye tests will feel obliged to purchase a pair within the store usually at a huge markup.

When booking your eye appointment make it clear that you want a copy of your prescription script after your consultation (you/your health cover is paying for it); If they give you some bull about being unable to issue you with one just walk off.

After your eye appointment the sales staff will do their best to "sell" you a pair of their glasses giving you all sort of sales bull about fit, after sales service, warranty, etc. Appear disinterested and make it clear that you are shopping around (probably a good time to ask if they will price match their competitors) by this stage most sales staff will be desperate and will most likely offering you "so called" additional extras for free that others usually pay for.

If the deal is good then proceed with the purchase, otherwise leave letting them know that you are open to being contacted if a better deal (than the one offered) becomes available.

Remember with your prescription script the buyer has the power not the retailer.

From personal experience I could tell by body language that the SpecSavers staff were annoyed when handing over my glasses prescription script(no sale for you).

for simple single-vision prescriptions i have found online retailers to be fine.

I don't see why they would complain to hand over your prescription. They get paid by Medicare when you do an eye exam. They still make money, just not the 900% markup on their glasses.

    • Some optometrist stores hire optometrists to work in their store like contractors i believe. The money from medicare would more likely go to the optometrist themselves. If the store owner is not an optometrist, they don't get that much benefit.
I tried to do a colourblind test with a store once. The boss was not interested in me and was treating me like a beggar, as there is no real cure that can be sold to me. Went to another chain store that was happy to help!

    • My local optometrists are still playing cute with bulk-billed prescriptions. They'll give you the prescription but not the pd and reckon they don't have to. Are they correct?

Doesn't worry me because I already have it.

      • Yea, I went for a eye test at Specsavers. The optometrist left out the pd as well. I asked about it specifically, and he reluctantly gave it to me. Not sure if it was accurate though, he just held a ruler to my eye quickly and gave me a number.

        • I paid for my eye test, was told PD was measured as part of dispensing process by opto (OPSM) and went to another and said its part of the eye test and its required by law to provide it. Had enough and measured myself with a selfie and ruler

  • Thanks. I was after a pair of Dita frames, sadly I don't think Specsavers or Luxicotta stock this brand
