AMEX - Payment returned / Card suspended

I'll call AMEX in the morning but just wanted to see if anyone is awake to ease my worries. :( This is literally my first credit card payment and I can't believe I messed it up.

Basic timeline of events:
01/09 - Notified payment is due on 06/09
02/09 - Sent payment through and got email and text confirmation
08/09 - Notified of missed payment. Went online to see that payment was returned on 07/09

I'm a little confused on what's happened or what I did wrong. I can't definitely recall which bank account I paid with but it should have been with my USaver account which has more than enough money. Can I not pay via a USaver account? :S

What happens now.. Will the banks hold this rookie mistake (that I don't even know) against me?

where did you get email/text confirmation from? Ubank saying the payment had been processed or Amex themselves?

you can only pay off CC's with your ultra account, not the USaver account.

  • No point guessing. Call Amex.

  • I called and paid through UBank Saver Ultra so hopefully no issues.. I usually transfer straight into my UBank Saver so kind of assumed I could transfer straight out.

    • Yes, you can transfer funds directly out of an UBank Saver account.

      • That's what I did and it bounced back. :S I'll just use my Ultra account to avoid future issues.

  • Set up automatic direct debit in your Amex account if you haven't done so.

    • Yeah I did but will need to change that now given the UBank Saver bounced. =/

      • You can transfer funds directly out of an UBank Saver account (if you do it manually) but you can only set up direct debit with funds coming out of an UBank Saver Ultra.

  • It's a Bpay not just a transfer. Amex will probably waive the late fee and interest as its your first time.

    • They said there weren't going to be any fees but I put on an extra stressed voice just in case!

  • Does anyone know if I set up direct debit with the UBank Saver Ultra, will it auto sweep out money if there's less than the payment amount on the card?

You mean if the Ultra account has insufficient money?

Yes it will sweep it from your USaver to make up the difference and then make the payment.

I've had it set up that way since the Ultra account started and its only failed once, and I have a lot of direct debits going on (perhaps 5 or 6 different credit cards).

That one failed time was actually quite recently and UBank are currently investigating what's caused it because it should have worked.

      • Yeah, because I think my Ultra account usually always has $100 on it but I recall the sweep feature prevents the account going negative and overdrafting. Anyway, thanks for confirming!

    • Yes, any additional funds required will be auto swept from USaver into Ultra.

      • Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I think I once tried to make an over the phone payment with the Ultra and it didn't work so I just wanted to double check it would work with CC payments. :)

  • I tried to pay my credit card bill via bpay from my ultra account last night and it wouldn't go through.. Insufficient funds.. There was plenty of cash in the u saver account.. Plenty! It should have automatically paid it from the u saver.. Didn't work. I had to manually transfer enough cash over and it worked straight away.

Honestly these accounts are a pain in the ass. When you use the debit card and have insufficient funds in the ultra account (plenty in the usaver) it won't honour the payment at the pos. Makes. You look like a real di**.
