  • So if we know it's not as good as prior sales, and the price of fuel per barrel at ridiculous lows, what's the issue ?

Peso strength/ AUD weakness. Dropped over 20% in the last year and half.

Warning, Philippine is regularly in news for tourists been kidnapped for ransom, some even across the boarder to Malaysia to kidnap tourists, Google it for yourself to see.

We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines due to the high threat of …

      • -2

Warning, don't believe everything your government tells you for they may have ulterior motives….

        • +2

Looks like someone isn't familiar with the kidnapping history of the Philippines. Those dudes don't play around. Look up the Dos Palma's resort kidnapping. DFAT has a responsibility to advise its citizens on dangers in other countries, and despite many tourists going there without incident, it is a dangerous place and things can happen.

        • -1

@alizzan: Who could that be? I'm well aware of incidences of kidnapping in Phillippines, and travelled there 6 mths ago despite certain alert levels and warnings from Australian Gov't authorities. I choose to do my own research on travel rather than merely rely solely on warnings from an increasingly untrustworthy government, and would prefer those disseminating information here to do so in a non-hyperbolic fashion.

If people choose to rely only on their government to tell them where it is safe to travel to, perhaps they shouldn't be travelling.

        • +3

@alizzan: Geez, if you're going to bring up stories from 14 years ago then you may as well not go to any country in the world! More recently, in countries perceived as MUCH safer:
Stay away from Norway or you'll end up in a Massacre!
Stay away from Japan or you'll get run down by a truck and if you're still alive, get stabbed by the driver!
As for the safest country in the world? Over 25 murders in Iceland since the kidnapping in the Philippines.

Yes, this is a facetious post but fear-mongering with stories like those (although true) need to be tempered with a big dose of realism…

        • @carwashair - I'm not sure what you're getting at with the Government having ulterior motives. They've had that travel advice for the past ten years (probably longer), and I don't see how it really benefits them to advise people caution.

@halfnhalf71 - I was pointing out that there have been situations where tourists have been kidnapped. I wasn't suggesting not going to the Philippines, I was pointing out to carwashhair that there is a reason why DFAT advise citizens that the Philippines as a potentially unsafe place to visit, because it is. If you have been there without incident, then I'm glad to hear that and I hope it continues to be that way. I also know of plenty of people who haven't been so lucky while not doing dangerous things. There's a reason why every shopping center in Manila will pat you down, most have metal detectors, and shopping center security guards carry 12 gauges and AR15s. Again, this is Manila, and not representative of the rest of the country, but to say it's a safe place because the last major kidnapping was 14 years ago is a fallacy.

        • @alizzan: I'd say it benefits Gov't to advise caution - if less Australians travel to 'dangerous' places, less Australians will potentially require embassy services/repatriation services etc in those places. There's a financial cost to that. Just like there's a lost economic benefit from Australians travelling and spending money in places that aren't Australia.

I just don't want to see Australia going down the path of the US, with an increasingly insular society happier to stay 'safe' at home than travel abroad. The barriers to travel are increasing for Australians (just look for starters at current passport fees and departure taxes), and with the current government wanting the right to revoke citizenship at will in select cases (not to mention the terrorism hysteria and manufactured 'security threats' that seem to boil up opportunely these days), I just don't feel comfortable with the way advice is given by DFAT given the rest of the government's messages.

Departmental warnings and alerts are useful, but should make up only one part of a travellers travel research.

Do you think they make any profit at all on these fares? To complain about increases is to show a lack of understanding as to why they start off with crazy cheap prices and slowly increase them.

BTW Please say it's true that they are going to fly from Melbourne!

  • I have a flight coming up with them, what is it like in economy? More importantly, is there a USB port in the seat? I know it's a stretch.

    • +3

      Standard. No USB (standard).

    • +2

As above standard plain seat. No power, no usb, no IFE, limited recline. I suggest you take a power bank if you require usb power.

    • BYO food, entertainment & comfort

    • Yep its a pretty basic service. Inflight food is cheaper than Sydney Airport and comparable to a food court. There is lots of staff and they are friendly. No USB or entertainment offered at all so expect to give the inflight magazine a good read.

At some point in the flight wait for the pop quiz where you might win an inflatable hemorrhoid cushion. Its a bit of a laugh but considering that my first flight to the Pi a few years ago was ~$900 with Qantas on special, it's hard to complain when we are now getting flights at half the price.

    • be lucky to have a pilot for $200 return

      Thanks Philippines Tourist Board!

  • Op where was this listed? The site says travel period up to Feb 2016? Do u have the sale period start date?

This really only pertains to the southern areas of Mindanao where there is a high level of conflict between clashing groups. If you travel to the areas where tourism is their bread and butter you will generally be safe. Philippines has some of the most beautiful beaches, delicious foods and friendliest people you will ever encounter. Everyone speaks English and are extremely friendly. I've always wondered why aussies prefer to head to Bali when Philippines has a lot more to offer.

This deal is to Manila which many people would use to travel else where overseas cheaply or to the standard safe Philippine destinations of Boracay, Cebu, Palawan… etc.

I have been to the Philippines many times, as-well as the north eastern part of Malaysian Borneo. I don't need to read outdated exaggerated articles from the internet.

If people are going to travel to the far southern islands of Mindanao then that is a risk that is their own.

    • I've been to Mindanao, nothing wrong with the place. There's only a couple of regions that's mostly muslim, everywhere else is catholic.
The mayor of Davao, capital of Mindanao is know to be pretty tough on crime.

There's plenty of retirees from other countries everywhere in the Philippines.

  • It's a good price, but really hard to find dates for flights with these fares

    • There was plenty last night, what date range are you looking for i can still see plenty for later on in the year 2016 late May - June, July etc

      • I was looking March/April. My trips are usually quite short though, around 5-7 days.

        • @davohatcher:

Yeah, thanks, booked for Feb :)

      • I am in the same boat. Looking for a short trip around March/April/May. 5 days is ideal. The 22 May return trip is no longer valid and I have not found any other cheap return legs.

  • Does anyone know of a page or app whereby you can search flights in a table format similar to the way it used to be:

    http://1pisofare.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Cebu-Pacific…

    • Yeah I was wondering whatever happened to that view. Couldn't find any settings or options.

    • It seems to get disabled when they have a sale, I suspect to reduce server load. AirAsia do the same thing.

      • It has been disabled for about 6 months - sale or not. There was a minor website revamp and this disappeared.

It would be good if anyone knew of an app or 3rd party page that still pulled this data.

  • For anyone who missed the cheap tickets on AirAsia, and wanting to go 'Sydney to Bangkok', this can be a cheap alternative way to get there. About 4 hr connection Syd - Mnl - Bkk. Not sure about return though ('Bangkok to Sydney'). Cebu Pacific flight as good as AirAsia, food not as good, but staff very friendly. Seats same space, but are very firm, so take a little padding.

Just note that Cebu Pacific uses Airbus A330 for the Sydney & Manila route. I have flown this plane once, from Singapore to Manila, and the standard seats are slightly wider at 30 inches (other budget airlines that use A320 typically has less — at 28 or 29 inches).

They also have Plus Seats located at the tail end of the plane. It's wider at 32" but you'll need to pay approx A$15 per way for that.

No frills flight as others pointed out — 7kg handcarry, check-in luggage for a fee, no IFE, no USB, no power socket, no inflight meals included but for this price you're paying, I'd reckon it's worth it (just bring a powerbank, a loaded tablet/phablet/phone for your personal entertainment, and buy your food inflight — or purchase during booking).

  • "Word has it that Cebu Pacific is looking into launching direct Melbourne services in the coming months."

    Finally!!!

    • Initial discussions for Cebu flying to Melbourne mentioned they were looking at flying to Avalon, from memory. Not sure how that would work with Customs/Immigration though.

      • If they can afford to fly to Sydney airport, Melbourne would be a discount. Not to mention 24 hour operation.

      • whaaaatttt????AVALON? well i guess that's much better than driving/flying/train-ing to sydney to get this flights.

  • Nothing in march and I don't like to book too far ahead a lot can change in that time.

  • Make sure you watch your drinks when you're there, twice ive woken up 2 days later. And no it wasn't smashed.
1st time I was in margeritas in Angeles, only one beer paying pool and just felt really bad …paid my tab and just made it back to the hotel.
2nd time was in Manila, the waitresses in the hobbit house dwarf bar all wanted drinks, I said I didn't have much money so I ended up out again for 2 days. Whatever drug they use it is nasty as hell, very painful.
I've also been robbed and pickpocketed in the jeepneys too. so just always keep an eye out, if you carry money stuff tissues in your pocket so they can't get to it easily.
Don't hand over money in any safe as I've had issues with hotels and the police are in on it often so they are all useless. I've also had a gun pointed at my head twice, So many issues and I've traveled many countries, so don't think it's a walk in the park, enjoy but watch out read up on all the scams. They can seem sweet but can be ruthless.. trust me.

    • I noticed the worst stories happen in bars. Bars in Asia attract very seedy types.
