Looking for a good quality socket set

Hi all,

Looking for a good quality socket set up to $100, preferably with life time warranty. Have sussed out kincrome, sidchrome, bahco and Stanley at the usual suspects like bunnings, super cheap and masters. It seems I missed out on a few good deals in the last few months, am hoping you all could help find me some now!

  • I have a sidchrome set here collecting dust in melbourne if youre interested

  • Thanks guys,
Camoqs I've sent you a message for more details.

I found one of these sets at the local bunnings, do you guys think it's a good deal?

    • I've seen this Sidchrome set for $150 at my local total tools a few times, I've also seen a dedicated 3/8" sidchrome socket set in a formed case in a few of their stores for the same price. Sorry I can only find a link for one set right now.

I think either of these would be better value

  • For good quality id be going repco branded. They often have them on sale.

  • I haven't had any problems with the Stanley sets from Supercheap. I'm a back yard mechanic. Used them for everything from replacing starter motors to swapping engines..

  • Thanks t_c, I've also heard good things about repco but they're more pricy then the Stanley and about same price as sidchrome in the current catalogue so I might pass on them.

I just discovered that masters stocks a small Stanley 21 piece and a large Stanley black Chrome set.

Might try to get them to price beat, and try stack with 5% off wish cards and 5% trade card.

Wish the 199 super cheap cabinet and tools set was still on offer though, it's gone up to 249… Unless you guys know how to get discounts at super cheap?

  • Callum22, that one you linked to looks like what I need if it's 150, which is your local total tools? I was in the Mt Waverley one today and they didn't have anything like that…

    • Mine was Melton & it was amongst the sale/marked down stuff near the entrance. I've also seen them both in the Brooklyn store.

  • If your after a 3/8" set, I would go for this

Its reasonably priced for a medium quality set, that I have used for 5 years without a problem.
Very compact, as the sockets are standing up. Think I purchased it from either Bunnings or Supercheap and its about half the cost of what you are prepared to pay for a quality brand and I believe this set is just as good.

  • big ticket, thanks for the suggestion, I've read that the supatools stuff is a bit hit and miss, some will last for years and years whilst others have had the rachets flex and the sockets crack when leaned on.

I think I'll try my luck with the mid or higher range brands with a supposedly better warranty.

In other notes, I just heard there is a Kincrome outlet in Melbourne, anyone know if its worth a visit?

  • Hi all, went the Stanley set in the end, can't beat a stack of price beat plus giftcards!

  • Update to all, the stanley set came with a dud ratchet so I got a refund for it and went the sidchrome set that Callum recommended from the local Total Tools.

They couldn't find the 77 piece set for me so gave me the 82 piece set for the same price of $149!

    thanks for the great suggetions!
