Imported iPhones Selling in Australia.

I have seen a lot of iPhones for sale that are imported (specifically the 5c). They say they have a 12 month warranty back to base. Is there anything I should know about these imported phones? Are they different to the ones sold at Apple themselves. Silly question perhaps but are they safe to buy?

Thanks for your help.

  • You risk not being able to have them serviced at the genius bar in Australia for one thing.

Yes they are safe to buy though make sure you buy through a decent seller not some random website.

      Wronggg.

I purchased a grey market macbook air and Apple still replaced the motherboard free of charge.

Apple dont really care where it is from, they just look at when it was manufactured.

      • That is a Macbook air which is a different product in a different category.

        Apple computers have international warranties.

iPhones don't or didn't until quite recently.

Apple products have international warranty. Apple products purchased within Australia have an additional 1 years warranty covered under the Australian Consumer Standards giving you 24 months of warranty. Apple products purchased outside of Australia only have 12 months of international warranty.

Grey Imported iPhones = 1 year warranty with Apple Australia

Locally Sourced iPhones = 2 years warranty with Apple Australia (Gumtree/eBay/Kogan new purchases are likely grey imports so they will only get 1 year warranty)

If you have any concern about iPhone, get the imei number and call apple, they can check where it was originally purchased from.

  • Thanks as guys,as that has been a big help. Now how did I sort out who the 'reputable' sellers are?

Kogan seems to be one. Anyone else have any others they can tell me?

    • Look at the sellers feedbacks and other items they sell. If they usually sell baby toys and all of a sudden there's an iPhone for $100…well….

  • Just be aware of different models within the description. ..iPhone 5c

Make sure you get the right model for your carrier.

  • Not being very technical, how do I find out which model will suit my carrier (iinet). I gather the last number is a number identifier for the model of iPhone?

    Phew!!!

    iinet uses the A1529

    Good luck with your purchase…

  • Thanks so much for your help driver33b!!!! I'll do some checking this weekend.

  • Off-topic, but unless you can get the 5c really cheap, they're a pretty underwhelming device these days. Plenty of more capable devices out there for less money.

  • What would you suggest? I am think about the 5C for my husband. He wouldn't use any smart phone to it fullest capabilities but as we are slowly becoming an Apple Family I thought it would be the best entry level for him.

    • If your husband is anything like my dad, the screen will be too small to use without putting glasses on all the time. The LG G4 would be my suggestion, they've just come under $500 and will be relevant for a lot longer than the iPhone 5c.

  • Thanks, that is a good suggestion as well.
