Xbox 360 RROD

Dear the wise OzBargain community,
I have recently encountered the Red Ring of Death on my Xbox 360. In the past couple of weeks it has been displaying the Red Ring Of Death. I searched online for an answer and found 100’s of videos that said it was due to the thermal paste that was used. The videos said that if I cleaned the CPU, GPU and heat sinks, the Xbox would function again. This took me about 10 hours total to open the Xbox, clean it and put it back together. The fix lasted about 1 hour and now the Red Ring of Death is back. Would you be able to recommend any way that I can fix my Xbox? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,
Bargainmuncher

Get another one off gumtree mate. Around $50- $70 if ur quick and should come with controller and a few games.

You can then resell controllers for $25, and get $15 for your old power supply too.

Not worth the effort for repair at all

an anonymous neg for sound, legit advice? Really?

  • Yes, there are 3rd party heatsinks you can buy to replace the original crappy heatsinks.

and you can also mod it with fans, while that increases airflow it also increases dust intake and noise.

It is not because of the thermal paste. It is because of the x clamp bending the mother board when it is hot.

I wouldn't bother fixing rrod. Just get another second hand one. Best to get the elite or slim as the problem appears to be fixed in these versions

Totally agree with buying slim 360.
I've tried a thermal paste and O rings fix before. Won't help much…
    Unfortunately it's a design flaw

    Get an Xbox one.

Why are you telling OP to get a DVD player? He obviously wants a videogame console.

  • I thought the RROD was an old problem which MS addressed.

    • On the newer units, yeah, but they didn't fix it on older units. I had the older unit and my xbox got it 4 times, so if all it was a problem with the thermal paste, they didn't fix it in the 4 opportunities that they had.

I wonder if OP is talking about an early Xbox 360 or a 'newer' console from about 2009, like the one with the HDMI port.

Wrap it in a towel! (Don't wrap it in a towel)

      • The newer version that has the hdmi port. I am going to re-apply the thermal paste to the cpu and gpu. That should fix it.

  • 10 hours?
Your hourly rate must be low.
e.g. if you earn $20/hr that is a theoretical loss of $200.

    • I am a kid so dont have a job, that is hwy i would like to repair it myself

  • I have three Phat machines that I am about to throw out. You can have them if you are in Canberra.

  • Does anyone have the email address of Microsoft' engineers or technicians? Maybe i could ask them how to fix it.
