  • any cheap bluray players?

I picked up my refurbished Sony BDP-S1500 from Grays eBay with the father's day discount. Came to just under $40 which I was pretty happy with. Didn't need any fancy features for now.

Graysonline is a rip off and the buyer's premium for auction items is a sham.

    • +1

A sham? How else do you think the auction house should get remunerated?

      • Why doe the buyer have to pay the fees? That's not how it works on eBay.

        • +2

How it works on eBay is the seller factors the fees into his prices…

        • @bobjane: how does the seller factor in the price when they list auctions at $1?

        • +1

          @Orpheus:
Pretty sure eBay doesn't charge insertion fees for stores meeting various selling criteria (and ordinary sellers under certain circumstances), only a percentage of the final value. So they wouldn't be making a loss.

        • @zzyss: We're talking about auctions. Both eBay and Grays have auctions. Plenty that start at $1. On eBay, the buyer doesn't pay the fees.

        • +1

@Orpheus: Either that $1 item cost the seller 5c or if it has any real value it'll go for way over $1.

Regardless of whether the eBay seller pads it into his price or Grays adds it onto the buyer's invoice, the buyer's the one paying. Do you really think eBay sellers are eating fees and taking losses?

If you just want to be pedantic and argue about where the number appears, I can't help you.

    • No it isn't a sham. There needs to be a disincentive to discourage straw bidders. How else would you do it?

      • It's a Darwinian mechanism to weed out dumb people. "A fool and his/her money are soon parted".

    • If you've ever been to a brick and mortar auction house, this is exactly how they work.

Information: A long time ago I attended brick/mortar auctions and onsold via ebay.

  • I really can't see why they can't let you bid THEN take their fees out of what you bid. That way you know what you are paying. Trying to work out GST, plus the fee on top of the bid is deliberately confusing (same thing happens in real auctions).

Plus, these $xx dollars off deals only apply to a single item. You can't buy a few items, then get the total and apply the coupon. You have to apply the coupon at the time you bid. Worse still, they use different terminology for the coupon, so if you're not familiar with the process you can stuff it up.

There are some good deals, but so much eBay like cheap, but still overpriced stuff on there it's ridiculous. Then there are their outrageous shipping fees.

  • I answer to outrageous shipping fees : That's " IF " shipping is provided - most items I ever was interested in required pickup only in NSW ( large - and or heavy)

For large items you need a man and a truck hired which sets you back even more - might as well buy something at " factory seconds outlet centres " where you can estimate delivery cost and time

  • I still love seeing people bid well above bargain retail prices on Greys. They can't physically inspect the item yet alot of them 'Seen it cheaper'…

  • +1

After buying and bidding and paying delivery from graysonline, I think its ripped off of many hidden fee.

After winning price, plus so many fee, end up not cheap at all.

  • You have to be very selective when buying crap from graysonline.
There are bargains out there, but it's 1:50 ratio of bargains to junk.
I've been stung by their ridiculous fees and more so on their shipping rates.
