Forza Motorsport 6 for $56 AUD from Xbox Live Singapore Online Store via Digital Gift Cards

400

Hi All,

Let me just start off / warn you by saying this process is a bit convoluted, but if you're a true OZBargainer, I'm sure you can get through it. I'm hoping the following guide is as comprehensive and as easy to follow as possible. I would also have to assume that this would work for any other Xbox one game on the Singapore Xbox live store.

The same / similar process may be used with other Xbox live stores to obtain other regional discounts along with further savings via currency conversion rates.

I've just done this so I know this works, but I'm not sure if it breaks any rules or anything like that.
Please proceed at your own risk - if others who try, get it to work, I'm sure other OZBargainers would appreciate confirmation.
I'd also recommend reading through the complete guide before starting so you are fully aware of all that's required.

I was browsing the Xbox live stores for the cheapest copy I could find for Forza Motorsport 6 and I stumbled upon the Singapore Xbox live store having a 20% discount off their Xbox live digital gift cards. I managed to purchase and begin downloading the game on my Xbox for $56 AUD, so I'd thought I'd share with you guys.

Please note: as of writing the exchange rate is near parity between AUD & SGD currencies.
Please check currency conversion rates & game prices in the correct currency before making any purchases.

1) You'll need a credit card that doesn't charge any currency conversion fees. I used a 28 Degrees MasterCard.
2) On your Xbox one, go to settings > system > language & location. Change your Xbox location to Singapore & language to English and restart your Xbox.
3) Once your Xbox has restarted, go to the Xbox store on your Xbox one console and find Forza motorsport 6 and select buy. The Xbox should prompt you to enter a credit card and billing information.
4) I entered my 28 degrees MasterCard details along with my real name and a fake address and phone number in Singapore (I chose a hotel)
5) Now buy the game… … … and get told that "Your purchase cannot be completed with this payment option."
6) On your PC - Head on over to http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mssg/en_SG/list/Xbox-LIV… & add the $50 and $20 DIGITAL (not physical) gift cards to your shopping cart. They should be $40 and $16 respectively with the discount applied.
7) Upon checkout, you'll need to log in to the same account you use for your Xbox live account that you just registered your credit card for on your Xbox. Once you log in, you may need to re-enter those exact same credit card & billing information details as you entered in step 3.
8) Complete the purchase. I received an email almost immediately saying that the order was processing. 1hr 30m after that I had the serial number / code for the digital gift cards.
9) Go back to your Xbox, go to the store tab, select games, use a code, enter the 25 character code. Input the code you received into the Xbox and repeat step 9 for additional gift cards.
10) Go back to the store tab, select games, select Forza Motorsport 6 Standard Edition, select your $70 worth of store credit and select buy.

Once I bought the game it started downloading in "My Games & Apps" along with the "Forza Hub" app and the "10 Year Anniversary Edition Pack".

11) Wait until the game has finished downloading and then follow the same steps as step 2 to return your console location and language to Australia/English & restart your console.

12) Enjoy your game :)

      Thanks Yellow

I don't mean to rain on your parade you're right a true OzBarginer would do it your way. But personally I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get a physical version and not have to spend a billion years downloading it!

Yellow, is that link for the USA target website?
I could only find this in Australia - http://www.target.com.au/p/forza-motorsport-6-xbox-one/58293…

@funkay: oh wow you're right! I'll delete my comment my bad D:

        • Agreed on the downloading pain. Although it does let you start playing after 10% or so. I love digital copies especially now that you can stream your Xbox to Windows 10. No need to go and physically swap discs to play. Remotely turn on, browse my collection, play and remotely turn off. Love it.

The pricing on the Aus digital store though :|

        • @vgmaster21:

The pricing is ridiculous on the online store. Shouldn't they be encouraging people to go digital? Even if they gave Gold members a 15% or 20% discount on digital games, they'd get something out of it.

        • @Gecko:

Encouraging people not to shop at their retail partner stores? Not until digital is more prevalent.

        • Yes it took like 20 hours to download my copy.

          That i got off ebay.

          For $30.

        • @vgmaster21: How can you stream xbox games on windows 10? My laptop is running on windows 10 can i play it on my laptop?

        • @pointless comment:

How did you manage to get it for 30?

        • +1

@Zylam Marex: got lucky. Some dude bought a bundle and didnt want to wait to download so he bought the disc too. I offered $30 cash and he said ok.

        • @pointless comment:

Wow, nice work man, now that's one hell of deal!

        • @Zylam Marex: yeh , as i say i got lucky… No resale in 2 years time though :)

I put the savings towards this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211923

That's Target America! not Target Australia.

already been mentioned :) shame I can't delete my comment

  • You can do this all through the store online and then the game will be waiting to be downloaded in your 'My games and apps' on your console, if it makes it easier for anyone. I've done it with Fifa 16.

    • Hi Samy,

If you could explain how I'd very much appreciate it.
I tried to do it all online, but my PC kept redirecting me to the xbox live Australian store, which is why I have those steps on the console.
I suppose it could be done with a VPN, but I just found it too unreliable.

      • Did you scroll to the bottom of the page (any store page) and change your region to Singapore? That should do it, and no VPN necessary.

        • Hi Smigit,

I googled the store to get a direct link. I thought i was being geoblocked / redirected by Microsoft to the Australian Xbox store. Maybe it was just because my region was set to Australia that I kept getting redirected back to the Australian site.

I'll have to try that next time. But for anyone else, redeeming your gift cards and buying the game directly from the Singapore website this way as opposed to using your Xbox, might be easier.

          Good tip!

          Thanks

        • +1

@funkay: Correct. If you change the URL yourself or browse to it it'll redirect to your local page as defined by the site settings (or an error page if the items not in the store). You need to scroll to the bottom and change the region to prevent that happening (and any other region will then redirect to the Singapore, US or other chosen store.

It's a nice quick process, and by default downloads will auto start on the console as Samy said. I used the Singapore one for the first time the other day and it was pretty convenient dealing with an English store with a 1:1 currency conversion (more or less). A few like Russia it's best to use Chrome or something with a translator built in.

        • @Smigit: Did you have to change your Xbox console region to the same location you were buying the game from to start the game download on your xbox console? Or did it just start downloading when it was set to the Australian region?

        • +1

@funkay: I don't believe you have to change the console region.

  • This is classic ozbargain material.

  • Sweet thanks! Just one question. Once your return your console back to Aus, does Forza 6 show up in your installable games list? Like when you delete a digital game it shows up in the list on the right, does Forza 6 do that with region is set to Aus?

    Thanks buddy.

    • That's a good question Zylam.
I'm still downloading the game, so I can't test it.

    • I had an idea Zylam,

While my Xbox is still set to the Singapore region downloading Forza Motorsport 6, I looked all the way to the right of "My Games and Apps" and under the "Ready to install" list, I could see game demos that I previously had installed on my Xbox but have since deleted. Those demos were downloaded when the Xbox was set to the Australian region.

So if it goes both ways, the game should still be available to download when the console is set back to the Australian region. This to me, says that the game is attached to your Xbox live account and not to the region the game was purchased from.

Of course, this still has to be tested and confirmed, but I hope it helps.

Also, as a side note for anyone interested, Tomb Raider the Definitive Edition is free at the moment for Xbox live gold members on Xbox one.

Plus for effort. I got my copy for $30 on ebay

  • Any way to avoid international fees if you don't have a CC that does that? Can I pay with PayPal?

    • Hi Putnam,

PayPal is a payment method offered when buying the digital gift cards from the Singapore Xbox website along with VISA, MasterCard & American Express.

I believe PayPal may charge their own currency conversion fees, or the credit card you have registered with PayPal may charge their own.
Best to check their website to confirm the details.

  • Got a sample address to use for our billing address?

    • Hi Swankenstein,

I just used the address of a hotel in Singapore.
      Eg: Raffles Singapore
      1 Beach Road, Singapore, 189673

      • +2

Better yet, use Microsofts own address… 1 Marina Blvd, Singapore 018989

        • lol

        • @funkay:

That is their ROC, aka their main office for Asia Pacific.

  • I did the same on Monday but purchase the ultimate edition via NAB debit card for $96.22 the international fee come to $2.89 = $99.11 total.

Make sure you purchase an Xbox digital gift card and not a Xbox Live gift card.

    • Hi strat,

It goes to show that depending on your bank's currency conversion fees, you can still save money buying from an overseas Xbox live store.

  • "10) Go back to the store tab, select games, select Forza Horizon Motorsport 6 Standard Edition"

    This is NOT Horizon

    • Thanks for picking that up lggemo.
      I've corrected that error.

I regularly buy from the Hong Kong digital store, using a Hong Kong pay pal account. If it hasn't been mentioned yet, check out http://www.digitalgameprices.com

    • Hi tomski182,

That's a VERY good price comparison website.
      Thanks for contributing :)

  • Interesting. Does this work for games that are currently discounted under the deals with gold program?

    • Hi Shambler,

I believe it should. Different regions have sales for different games under the deals with gold program.
You just need to make sure you're adding the gift card credit to an Xbox live account that has the Xbox live gold subscription attached to it.

      • Awesome thanks! Going to give it a go with Trials Awesome Max Edition!

      • Hi funkay, just wondering.. So does this mean we dont have to create multiple accounts/ID for different regions? All we have to do is change the location in setting?

        • Hi piggiepanda,

I believe so. I used the same account for my purchase at the Singapore Xbox live store as I've always used for my Australian purchases.

        • @funkay: Interesting… Seems to work quite differently with the PS4… Is there a limit on how many times we can change locations?

        • @piggiepanda: Not that I am aware of. But I haven't done it that many times, so I can't confirm if there is a limit.

  • Damn, as if I didn't have too many other games to complete.

  • +1

Be aware that technically this is against the XBL terms and conditions as you are fraudulently buying content from another region and could lead to an account ban. It probably won't, but it could, so everyone that does this should be made aware of the risks.

    • Good to know.

      Thanks MrFunSocks

  • Looks like this promo has finished.
