Best camera up to $300

As the title suggests, looking for a new camera. Dont know a thing about standalone ones but i need to address the following.

Max 300 dollars
Great photos!
Reputable brand
Quick taking of photos
Video recording
Good zoom but its not the be all end all
Good battery life

Anything else to consider?

Thanks in advance!!

  • These days mobile phones under your budget usually have brilliant cameras in them.
Just be careful with going for a dedicated camera with big zoom capabilities… you will need to haul a tripod to fully utilise it.

    • Unfortunately no Aldi in SA yet

  • We like pocked sized Panasonic's eg DMC TZ40 (& maybe more recent versions n same family)

GPS + WIFi + wide range of focal distances from near (Macro AF) to way off in the distance…
USB charging cable works fine w/ your PowerBank

You may have to dip into the Used market to get later models for $300 or less, but if you have to up your limit, you won't be disappointed, IMO. (Do your due diligence in the reviews, as some are reportedly better than others, in same family)

Let us know what you chose & how it performs for your application.

PS We tried a costly Sony & found it a very disappointing experience.

We've owned several Panasonic DMC TZ's (& their ZS - or is it SZ? - counterparts) & haven't looked back.

  • Probably tossing up between these two;
    Sony DSC-W830 http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod10728.htm
    Canon Powershot SX610 HS http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod12068.htm

    Much noticeable difference?

  • Best quality photos would be a budget DSLR or mirrorless. Not the most portable.. but the most capable for the money.

Something like an older m4/3 or Sony mirrorless kits can sometimes be found under $300. They have a similar sensor to $1000 cameras and serious lenses are available for upgrade.

P&S below the RX100 class isn't worth it really.. cheap P&S is somewhat better than a phone camera, but not worth the added hassle
