How are thumbnails generated for deals?

I am guessing one of the following things happen:

  • scotty has written an amazing piece of code that can intelligently pick up the correct product image from the page or capture a screenshot if appropriate

or

  • Mods/Power Users are in charge of choosing from a list of suggested thumbnails (similar to Facebooks URL sharing script)

or

  • Said users must source the image themselves for every deal posted

Not sure if it's not meant to be public knowledge, I am just curious as to how the the thumbnails are always so accurate/appropriate.

As i've said previously, mods (and power users) take it in turns sitting in mcdonalds, using the free wifi, hosting the website. That includes taking screenshots.

Screenshot?! I have to take out my camera, take a photo of my laptop screen, and then upload the photo to make thumbnails. Moreover we cannot do that at McDonald's any more, just in case we accidentally snap some copyrighted material in our photos.

Reminds me of my tennis club. Every month or so, they make a newsletter in what I can only guess is Microsoft Works. They then print the newsletter out. They then scan the printed newsletter into a PDF and then attach the PDF to an email. The whole process is mind boggling.

      • and Dubway?

        • @Davo1111: you are right. I like 5UBW4Y too, and think it is more creative than Dubway. See a lot of Dubway image online and do not know why till I read this.
