Basic gaming laptop at $1000?

I've been searching for days and found nothing that suits

I have a gaming desktop that I play most of my games on however for a number of reasons I'd like a basic gaming laptop to play strategy games like Cities: Skylines, Magic the gathering, and also some online games like Rocket League

Is there a laptop (preferably reasonably small) that can do this well for $1000? The cheapest I can find is the Asus Rog G550 for $1300, though apparently it is really big and heavy.

  • Good luck finding one. I am also looking for one for between $1,000 to $1,5000 and couldn't find it. Most suitable ones are at $2,000 and above.

MY laptop now overheats when I play games for over 30 minutes and it shuts down automatically.

Must be dust choking the air vents. Open it up and do a clean. If your laptop is more than 2 years old, you can also reapply the cpu thermal paste.

      • Yeah I thought about that but didn't have the time to check it out. Thanks for the reminder. I bypassed the overheating yesterday by setting the games to lowest detail as possible. Doesn't look pretty but better than getting shut down during games.

    • I can play every single game on my HP Envy 15 K039TX. It is less than $1000. I can play GTA V on max settings!

  • You'd want a minimum graphics card of a GT 940m (or 840m). I don't think you'll get a better card for that price. Just make sure to check the requirements on those games first.

    Eg: MSI CX61

    For $1049

You can also buy it cheaper without an OS: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=MSI+CX61

The cheapest and nastiest one I could find after a quick search was this one:

    • Looks like I might just need to pay the premium for a decent one then :( Can't go back to a 1366x768 screen :P Thanks anyway

      • I couldn't play for an extended time on a 15.6" or even 17" monitor. I've got mine hooked up to a 23" screen when at home.

        • yeah I wouldn't be able to do it for most games, my desktop is connected to my projector (120") but it makes it hard to play any kind of strategy games and I like to play online at a friend's place too (can't play online at my house) Just isn't as fun playing on the lowest settings on my macbook :(

  • I don't think you're going to get lucky with a budget of $1000. You can try finding a lucky second-hand laptop on eBay or Gumtree but buying one new good enough to play on anything but extra low is a bit of a stretch. If you were really desperate for one you could just save a little more money (200-300) and you should be able to find something decent.

Thanks for your reply, I have the money just finding it hard to spend it on a secondary gaming computer that I'll only use for a few games, but looks like I might just have to pay up

      • Totally agree with you. You might find a good deal soon enough since we're getting close to the end of the year. The laptop I have is the ASUS G550JK, I paid $1300~ new mid last year (on sale). Haven't got any issues with it apart from the audio jack being a bit finicky with audio (static in, static out).

      • Yup. Totally agree with you. I have a gaming desktop which I no longer use due to the lack of space in the room. I only play a few games each day if I am lucky and sometimes not even once in a few days when I am busy.

Not worth getting a second laptop for that when my gaming laptop now overheats or the mrs. wants to hog it for her movies. My heart wants to get a $2k one but my mind is stopping me.

        • Kaneissik, The G550 is the frontrunner for me, it's at $1200 with the current ebay sale and am pretty tempted..

DarkOz, same about the $2k one, they look so nice but then I think, wow $2k could upgrade my current computer to become an absolute beast and buy me an amazing screen as well and still have money left :(

        • @jumpo:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/213277 - got posted today, maybe have a look?

        • @kaneissik: Thanks, looks like a good price. Now trying to figure out if I want to buy it or build a small budget desktop to carry around on occasion.. The choices! :(
