Asus ROG Notebook: i7-4710HQ/8GB/1TB/2GB GTX850/15.6" $1,099 Delivered @ Wireless1 eBay

360
CLICK15

Looking around for a reasonable gaming laptop and found this old post which was well received.

It's currently $1,379 on their actual website but they've done a reverse Dick Smith on eBay and have it listed there for $1,199. Once you apply CLICK15 (max discount of $100) it comes down to $1,099 so a $200 saving on the previous deal. Shipping is free.

It's getting on I know but this is a very good price for the specs with plenty juice for my needs. I assume the price drop is also for the Intel Gen 6 versions which should be on the way soon, but at a much higher price

All information below from previous post - thanks to that OP :)

  • Also $27.50 back from cashrewards. But no bluray drive and only 8gb ram? I have a similar model but maybe 1 or 2 years older with a 3rd gen i7 and a gtx650m and even that has a BD drive.

    • Forgot to mention cashrewards.. Will update post. Thanks nmachine!

lol blue ray drive. What kind of enthusiast/gamer uses a blue-ray drive?
People know to get an external one if they really need it.

      • uhhhhh I do? If you're paying for a full hd screen, may as well watch bluray on it.

        • +7

Oh….you're one of those innocent and law abiding people. Carry on then.
Full HD screens are pretty standard and digital media is far more popular than buying blu-ray discs.

        • +1

@tendollar: 1378 is sadly still the most common in laptops, and I would challenge that digital media is more popular in Australia, I still think physical would be due to the crappy internet and download limits. For example it was only a few months ago that telstra generously upgraded me to 100gb.

Do many people actually use blurays nowadays. Was tossing it up when I bought as disk drive for my computer.

      • Only those who don't use services like netflix, file sharing and torrenting.

        • +2

Actually, only those that don't want to see macro-blocks and hear downmixed surround sound. Quaint, I know.

          @AlexF:

          Yikes…aren't you precious.

        • @AlexF: Exactly. Considering we no longer have any real HD TV being broadcast, Blu Ray is the only way anyone can take advantage of their FullHD TV they spent money on.

      • BluRay at home with a proper audio setup, sure. On a laptop? I personally think its a waste.

        • Just as I thought.

I'd wait for the laptops with the desktop gtx 980 to come out

    • They are out…

Also, its 980m for mobile GPU's.

      • +3

There is new GTX 980. its in MXM form and it performs pretty close to desktop GTX 980.

        EDIT

          Right…
I stand corrected, laptops struggled with heating, going to be interesting to see how they manage with more heat.

          I assume;
          - The price will be silly
          - The laptops are going to be bigger than my Asus G750 which is huge and heavy.

        • $2999+ price tag in my opinion.

        • @noone025: I am no expert but I think 3-4 kg laptop would be able to handle the heat from gpu. Problems will arise when people start overclocking. Desktop version is said to perform about 25% better than mobile version. I think to tackle overheating issues nvidiva decided to throttle gpu performance.

But still it would be hardly worth it at 3k cost, heavy laptop, not enough battery time, feeling like sitting next to jet engine and still less performance than desktop. It is for enthusiast people.

        • I thought I read somewhere that Asus ROG since the G73(My model), contained MXM cards?

    • Those laptops will be in an entirely different price range though.

  • +2

This looks a good price for the specs listed.

Could always wait for this beast when it comes out…prices are guestimating at UK Pounds: 4,000…and heavier than the G750

    • Just ridiculous.

  • How do these compare to the ROG G551JW series? or even the ROG G551JX from MSY? I can't tell which are the better/newer models.

This one seems like a better bargain at this stage https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/213264

  • as mentioned previously, good price, but there are issues with this pc to say the least heat and the bezel and poor chasis being a few. for 1k its gonna play your dotas and diablos no worries and if something does go wrong the service centre in sydney at least is decently fast.

make sure it has the latest bios settings too to avoid dealing with bsods.

  • Good price. Never had any issue with Asus laptops until recently…their ass-backwards design of the LAN/ethernet port (latch) is a problem waiting to happen. I can't repair the part, as when i plug in any network cable, the slightest movement disconnects it. Useless.

On the flipside, if it's not important to you; good specs and backlit keyboard with this price does make it an attractive offer…

  • Is it possible to Add 8mb ram
and also 120giga SSD in this laptop?

    thanks

    • +1

Is it possible to Add 8mb ram

that's not really gonna do you much good……

      • Every bit helps :)

  • +1

That graphics card is weak. I wouldn't call this a gaming laptop. Get a Geforce 780 at the least!

  • The new MSI Skylake laptops have been unveiled. Far better in specs than this, but you have pay like $500 more for the cheapest one.

  • Good deal! I bought one last time they were on sale for a few hundred more and I'm still super happy with it.
Haven't found a game it can't play, even goes alright with the Witcher 3 on medium :)
    I'm a big fan.
