Under specs, overpriced, should be $695.

    • +17

hideously overpriced, they've hidden the costs behind the Xbox name.

It's literally the same device as rog ally x, just with xbox banner.

      • Ally X is $1599, how is this overpriced?

        • +11

This isn't the X though (and the person you replied to was wrong in saying it's the same as the X)

          • +1

@encryptededdy: Thanks for pointing that out. I gave this deal +1 thinking it was the Ally X spec and just revoked after realising it's not.

        • Because you can buy a legion go for this price.

      • +6

No it isn't? Different body and different Apu, with the base Xbox Ally being less powerful than the Ally/Ally X and more in line with a Steam Deck, and the Xbox Ally X being more powerful. (These are awful names).

      • +3

It's literally the same device as rog ally x

…you might want to look up the specs, they are different

        • Ah my bad sorry, the product names are really confusing. In any respect, the cost to value ratio is still bad.

          • +1

@bliss35: completely agree, the naming conventions for anything xbox related as been terrible, now asus has had to inherit that bad naming convention when teaming up with xbox on this.

      • You mean it's the same as the rog ally. X is the much more premmy one.

      • Thought it should be cheaper with the Xbox name on it, seeing as the Xbox name is mud these days

      • No the 2A is not equivalent to Z1E

    • +1

with 5 year game pass ultimate bundle or no deal

    • +1

dispite the specs its a windows device with an auto launch to xbox app, doesn;t play xbox games or anything remotely xbox lol its all pc games, you can apparently even switch it to launch steam if you wanted to on start up instead of the xbox app.

for the price and what you get i will stick with my steam deck Oled the end of the day i don't need to deal with the pile of crap that is windows OS and its updates. steam OS simple and just works.

  • +19

I'm not going to speak on whether or not this is a worthwhile buy over a steam deck or any other handheld PC on the market right now but putting up pricing of the membership before this dropped after all the hype it generated feels like they wanted to kill this idea before it began.

    • +4

I agree gamepass going up sucks. But I don't think it really has any merit to say that it "kills" a whole new handheld…

    • +9

PC gamepass through Telstra rewards is still $34.82 for 3 months (vs nearly $20 a month now for sub) for anyone buying this I would suggest you jump on an stack a few codes.

      • Also, plenty of ways to get full Gamepass Ultimate using 10% off Xbox gift cards, bringing it down to $32.35 PM - better than nothing :)
But that PC Gamepass via Telstra is a good deal for 3 months for those playing on PC!

        • If you add the 3 month PC Gamepass code (from Telstra) to an active GPU subscription you get about 2 months of GPU

      • Is it actually still available through Telstra? As I haven't seen it in the rewards store for over a week now.

    • PC Gamepass hasn't gone up yet has it, so this shouldn't be too affected by that.

      • +7

Has been jacked to $19.45 a month now @witheredcouch

        • You're right! I must have missed it when I read the price update, thanks for the correction.

    • That's a really good point.

    • +16

      This isn't a TV.

        • +27

the steam deck oled has a 1200 x 800 screen.. what are u talking about??

        • +11

I think you are meaning to complain about LCD vs OLED
Not "FHD" which is referring to resolution and would be compared to 4K etc.

  • +5

This is the lower spec version, though it supposedly has the same cpu specs as the Z1E, and gpu specs is 200MHz slower.

E: Nvm its much lower spec.

    • +1

yep, Ryzen Z2 A is Steamdeck APU, Ryzen Z2 go is the one like Z1E and then there's Z2 and Z2 AI or something … absoloute cluster from AMD

  • +20

    Steam Deck Available from $649

Has also been as cheap as $519.20

    • Only way to try sell one's self on the price is saying it's a SD and PlayStation Portal combined.

  • +1

I guess i could read up about it more, but am i right in thinking i cant play all of my xbox games (that i own) on this…? Do i HAVE to have gamepass to get xbox games to play? At the end of the day, its really a PC, so im assuming any pc games (whether they were bought using the MS store or steam or epic) are good to go, but i remember people talking about how if i own some older 3rd party game on my xbox, i probably wont be able to play it on this…..

    • +7

This is just a portable PC, can't play xbox console games. Game pass is not required but this is probably the targeted users for the serivce, you can launch steam games and i assume other launchers (again it's just a PC with a "xbox" game launcher overlay)

      • +2

It can only play games which are 'play anywhere' enabled, which includes PC. Which means its just a PC handheld. So why does it even have the Xbox name?

        • +2

correct, it's just a pc! well the theory is that it's called an "xbox" because the next gen of xbox's will just be PC's there will be hardware from MS but other OEM's will also be able to build these "xbox's" as well (i.e. just PC's with APU's or pc bits n bobs etc) … this is their dip into this market to see the reaction and also to test out the xbox overlay (ala steam decks)

also just to mess with everyone this is just a Steamdeck level hardware the ROG Xbox Ally X is the one with the newer higher performance parts that puppy ONLY costs $1599.

If you have most your games on steam this is pointless to buy a steamdeck is cheaper and better.

          • @scud70: I have a Z1E, it’s not pointless because sometimes you just need a windows PC. That said with all the free games on Epic/Amazon games/GOG/etc, there’s plenty of titles outside of steam which are playable. And VRR is underrated.

I just need to find a way to get a battery replacement so it lasts longer. Looking at the JSAUX kit.

            • @ATangk: I wonder what's better - a Z1E portable PC that has a SteamOS partition (same software as a steam deck), or a Steam deck that has a Windows OS partition…. Hmm

              • @JuryWheel: Z1E no doubt.

              • @JuryWheel: Deck already performs bad on a lightweight OS, imagine giving it windows bloat.

    • +3
  • +4

You’d have to really like Game Pass to buy this over a Steam Deck OLED

    • +1

i do like game pass and i have another year before it expires (i had those 3 years at super cheap prices type of sub) afterwhich i'll use some points to keep it going before i call it a day as the new pricing is not worth it in my case. :)

    • In which case, I'd get a Steam Deck & either dual boot or have W11 for a while before flashing back.

  • +2

I ordered the Ally X from JBHi-Fi. Its Z2A performance is actually worse than the original Z1E.

    • But still a good deal

    • +1

ok so the Z2A APU is actually the same as the steamdeck so it will be weaker than the Z1E, the Z2 APU is fractionaly stronger than the Z1E but if you find a good deal for a device with at Z1E it is better bang for buck than the new Z2 (more powerful) models.

AMD known for being horrible at naming and now are using the naming to basically pull the wool over consumers eye's especially the typical user who isn't into tech.

      • +1

        what about the Z2E?

        • +1

Oh my bad when i said Z2 i meant Z2E… looks like the "Z2 Series" is Z2A (steam deck) Z2Go, Z2, Z2 Extreme and Ai Z2 Extreme (same as Z2E with an NPU). Link below explains which is what gen.

          Specs

  • +6

Best I can do is $650

  • +7

Big difference form ally to ally x

    ROG Ally
    Ryzen Z2A 4 core / 8 threads 2.8-3.8 GHz
    GPU:8 cores = 512 shaders at 1.8 GHz RNDA 2

    ROG Ally X
    Ryzen Z2 Extreme 8 core / 16 threads 2-3.3 and 5GHz
    GPU: 16 cores = 1024 shaders at 2.7 GHz RDNA 3.5

    • What about the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X?

P.S. the ROG Ally is the 2023 device. ROG Ally X is the 2024 device.

      • +1

Looks like the specs are right that he’s listed but hasn’t put Xbox in the name. Those specs he posted are for ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.

        • Haha yeah good pick up, completely forgot the Xbox name.

    • +1
  • -6

$999 in JB HIFI. It is not a deal

    • +7

$997 is $2 off, + $150 Amazon Promotional credit is way better than paying JB Hifi $999. What are you talking about.

      • +2

        My bad

      • And you can still get 6 months of Gamepass Untimate via Amazon with those bucks plus $ left over (old pricing still) 2 X 3 month codes.

  • +8

Just keep in mind that despite having the Xbox logo. It won't play any Xbox titles that are not PlayAnywhere.
In my case, that's means this won't play 90% of my Xbox library.

    • +1

Damn that's a shame. Most of the Xbox games I have are Play Anywhere but I had to check here https://www.trueachievements.com/xbox-play-anywhere/games?or…

    • I was vaguely interested if it could play my entire xbox catalogue (large number of games). To limit it to PC-compatible games, I get why that would be the case, but it hardly differentiates this device from any other of the handheld PCs.

      • There are some vague rumours that Microsoft is working on this limitation. But I certainly wouldn't buy this handheld assuming you can play your entire Xbox library.

        • AMD needed a 10m unit minimum for an APU with console compatibility, Microsoft wasn't daring enough.

  • +1

Its subjective, but I think its an ugly looking device.

    • +1

That's likely the last thing on most genuine buyers minds when grabbing a device like this.

  • +2

Just get a steam deck and rid your life of Windows altogether

    • -1

Yeah I saw from some reviews that this device comes with all the typical windows bloat, ms teams, recall etc… The Xbox software seems to be a skin-deep visual change in many ways.

I don't know why you'd pay a premium for this device, particularly when this base model has deck equivalent performance

    • Why so much blind love for steam deck? Sure oled but it's laughable underpowered, plus game compatibility with steam deck frankly isn't as good as Windows.

      • +2

this costs 50% more but its only like 15% faster. The X is way better though.

        • Plenty of other options.
Claw 7 ai was $400 refurb
Legion go refurb for around $770

Both have way better performance than SD despite steam OS being "better"

    • -4

enjoy your 1980's level of performance.

      • +1

ROG Xbox Ally promoted here is only a tiny bit faster than the Steam Deck, but the Steam Deck costs a lot less.

    • No thanks, I like the idea of being able to do normal tasks with it if I really needed to.

  • +4

The only one worth buying is the ROG XBOX Ally X but for $1599 im holding off for a bette deal

Strange only JB and ASUS sell it currently

    • +1

Agreed - waiting on a discount to tip me over. I was shocked that EB didn’t snap up an allotment of stock for the Xbox Ally X.

      • +1

Yer I’m still trying to figure out why EB Games doesn’t stock the XBOX Ally X version

        • Because they know people ain’t going to pay for it

          • @Aceboy884: Maybe they will stock it when it drops in price

        • +1

I was told by JB staff it was exclusive to them, at least for the time being

  • +1

This is a hideous looking device IMO.

    • +2

Good thing you're holding it and cover it up. I have to imagine it feels better to hold than it looks… The xbox controller is great in the hand and the old one just isn't quite as nice.

  • The tech youtubers are completely annihilating this.

  • +1

This is a rip off, steam deck games don't have suscriptions, as a bargain hunter, this deal makes ZERO sense after MS hiked their prices with Game Pass. Hard no for me.
