Why buy this when you can get a brand new M5 for $500 more?

    • -1

not everyone has the extra $500

      • +15

if you can afford a MAC you have an extra 500 bucks. we are not talking a cheap pc laptop here on a budget

        • +24

For many, $500 is a big save already mate. This is Ozbargain, not Beverly Hills

          • +1

@nicolascage: I'd love to know someone's situation where they have $2k to blow on a second hand laptop with only 16gb of ram, but they can't spend an extra 20% for the latest model, new, with a full warranty.

            • @ssfps: That’s called a budget and some people stick to it go home happy and others think I’ve spent $2k I may as well get the extras and go home happy

            • +1

@ssfps: Sounds like you dont know Apple refurbished mate. I bought two and it's practically brand new, with 1y warranty like any other purchase.
You think spending extra 20% is nothing? Why dont you start giving away this money to help other people? You're Mr Millionaire from Beverly Hills after all 😆

              • -1

@raperozbargain: Next you'll tell me how you had to buy that second hand audi/bmw as an investment.

                • @ssfps: At this point bro is just embrassing himself with gibberish no one understands 🤣

    • +8

Extra $360 on AOC, not worth to buy a refurb m4

      • +33

For many, $350 is a big save already mate. This is Ozbargain, not Beverly Hills.

        • +12

at that stage though I'd be asking why you want or need a M4/M5 MBP though. Even the M1's are still plenty.

        • +6

If macbooks were $1000 then a $350 saving would be tempting. But when you're already dropping almost $2k for a refurb I'd be leaning towards the m5 for that difference

        • +1

Normally everyhing on Apple refurb are not real bargain unless you add cashback and pay gift cards

        • -2

if on a budget for $350 saving why look at macbook pro, you are in the wrong demographics, if you drive corolla maybe don’t look at macbook pro, if in right demographic salary sacrifice and take the tax saving, i’m looking at new macbook air and i can salary sacrifice so that 35% off just base on tax. but am i in the mackbbokpro demographics, no and i earn good money.

          • @garage sale: Personally I was cross shopping MacBook Air (and also salary sacrificing it) a 512gb m4 air is $1800 for the 13 or $2100 for the 15. I chose the pro mainly for the screen but it’ll be up to everyone to weigh whats important to them.

          • +3

@garage sale: Some people have around 2k to spend on a macbook pro and they dont wanna go above and beyond. It's easy to say "oh just spend bit more for this for that". $350 is still money, and it doesn't come free. Would you give someone $350 so they can upgrade to M5? Cause I bet you drive a Porsche and earn good money yah?

        • +2

For many, $350 is a big save already mate. This is Ozbargain, not Beverly Hills.

Then why are you looking at macbook pros? If money is tight, you can get an ex-lease Dell for a fraction of the price.
Or look at macbook air. Pros are nice, a lot extra $ for marginal gain. Beverly Hills laptops. Bling, but only 16GB.

          • +2

@bargaino: There are gradations of difference between a shitty ex-lease Dell that has been rubbed on dirty bums and not having enough for an extra $350. Everyone has their budget. Then there is the OS to consider.

      • With discounted GCs (bit hard to find at Coles/Woolies lately though) only extra $120 approx for M5 on AOC

        • The same GCs could be applied to a refurbished.

        • +3

Rarely see Apple GC on discount now.

      • Is there a limit on how many you can buy on AOC? Is it one item per household. I am looking at buying two macbook pro laptops soon.

        • +1

Nothing at all. You also can pick up in store with no problem.

        • what's AOC?

      • I bought two MacBooks, one Apple refurb and one AOC. There was no difference except for the box in my case.

    • +1

It’s quite questionable whether it’s worth the extra $500 IMO.

    • -2

      because people are dumb?

    • because why pay more if there's no difference

    • The specs are almost identical to the m5. Not much of an upgrade

    • Send link

  • +6

I still think brand new M5 is better with $2249.1 if you can get 10% off gift cards.
Understand that's $260.1 more expensive but you got a brand new product with a better spec.

Or wait for clearance of the brand new M4 of the same spec and pay with discounted gift cards.

    • -1

      This IS clearance.
Apple clears out stock of their old products under the “Refurbished” label, which explains why there’s suddenly a glut of last-gen products being sold as “Refurbished”.

    16 gb ram ! For 2k !
    Ok now .. fight ! 🍿

    • +8

16 GB Ram for 2K on a refurb machine.

  • +4

16gb ram still alive in 2025?

    • +3

It will be for next 4 years. When people start complaining, Apple is still selling 16GB in 2029….. blah blah, then apple will increase to 24 GB (Not 32GB).

      • -4

No way. Now a days we have phones with 16gb. U open one google chrome tab and your 16gb whooop it goes.

        • -3

that is like comparing now we have SUV that seats 6 people, question is how much you need for your purpose, in single so don’t own SUV though cheaper per seat than sedan, but sedan corners better.

          • +4

@garage sale: Ur comment is out of no where

            • +2

@Zeee: It's like that scene at the end of Billy Madison
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

        • +1

That’s a problem with google chrome.

  • If flying out soon, M5 Pro cost close to $2100 with AOC and TRS

    • +3

TRS applies to "refurbs" as well.
But if you claim a $2000 laptop going out, you will have to declare it on the way in, and in theory pay tax.
edit: not if you used a pooled allowance from family/friend/mistress.

      • +1

What's a mistress? Did you mean mattress?

        • Username doesn’t check out

  • +2

I think i'll hold out for better discounts.

  • if you are chasing value, getting 3rd party refurbished M silicon MBP is the best

for most folks those will be better priced with similar RAM and storage and performance wise you won't see much difference compared to M4 non pro.

I am running M1 Max MBP 16 and I got it cheaper than this. if you're after performance, not even M4 Pro beats M1 Max in Apple Metal loads.

  • +1

    hackintosh is the real bargain.

    • +1

Dying breed sadly. Cool while it lasts.

    • -7

      Stealing always is.

      • I don’t advocate for Hackintoshes for different reasons, but stealing is fair game IMO when big corpos and the upper class do it and get away with it (or even better, be encouraged to do it again).

      • "Stealing" lol

  • +1

will this make tiktok run faster?

    • -2

Uhh I don't know anyone that struggles running TikTok? Do you need it run better for video production or live streaming? The vast majority are fine just using a high end flagship phone.

  • Can this run Win 11 VM?

    • Yep

    • Arm version and if the the app isn’t arm it’ll run in emulation mode. Emulation is far more computational taxing than virtualisation.

  • A bargain doesn’t always mean cheap, it means good value for the money you spend.
This sir is not a bargain, 500 less than the latest model that isn’t a refurb and comes with full warranty, this just highlights how much a better purchase new is.
A bargain would have you be 1250 or lower, when eBay has a 20% deal running and there’s a code for another 20%, and then 10% cashback (rip cashrewards), something like that would be a bargain.
500 off is almost as bad as Facebook marketplace asking near new price for an m1

  • +1

All Apple refurbs come with the same warranty as new….
