How much does changing a thermocouple cost in Victoria?

The gas heater in my lounge is turning off automatically. Contacted a gas plumber/technician who quoted $380 for changing the thermocouple which he thinks is causing the automatic shut downs (labour+material).

Does anyone know whether I am getting ripped off?

p.s. I got the same licensed gas plumber to service and do carbon monoxide test on my gas heater on 30 July 2015 and at the time he gave it a clean bill of health. I am based in the south/eastern suburbs.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestion.

  • My understanding is that the thermocouple is basically used to turn the gas off if the flame goes out. It's not high tech, and is usually easily replaced (although my only experience is with ducted heating).

As to the cost, you'll need to let us know what heater you have!

  • It is a Pyrox Flued Gas Space Heater. Very similar to the one in the below link:

  • +1

Everything trade costs $3-400 these days :/

I'm the kind of person to pull it apart, see if i can replace the part myself. But i'm also the kind of person who would die in a gas explosion saving the $380.

  • One never knows whether a tradie is ripping one off! Their quotes tend to vary significantly from one tradie to another! Just a general experience!

  • Fast forward in 2025, and I got charged $675 to change a thermocouple on a Vulcan Gas Water Heater

    1 THERMOCOUPLE : $44.30
    1 CONTROL GAS EUROSIT : $243.10
    LABOUR / CALL OUT FEE : $325

Is it very expensive, yes, that's 40% of the cost of a brand new unit installed.
While I'm seeing myself as a good DIY, I had no idea how to test the Gas unit and diagnose this issue, I didn't have the part, and also there is a piece of mind that I'm not going to explode because I messed it up.
