Hybrid Drives - Looking at Seagate ST1000LM014

G'Day Bargainers

My 2011 Macbook Pro has had a major fail with the GPU… Apparently a common fault unless you're talking to an Apple Tech-Support teenager, because despite a massive class action in the USA that basically forced Apple to admit the problem, nobody in Australia knows about it. I digress.

Because of said problems I want to replace the current 750Gb HDD (yeah, I know. Has nothing to do with GPU) with one of those wizz-bang 1Tb hybrid drives that has an inbuilt SSD component hooked up to a standard platter jigger.

Has anyone had any experience with this type of project?

I can replace it myself, but obviously need to source the drive from somewhere reliable that isn't basically an Australian shopfront for Chinese knock-offs.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hybrids won't be as fast as a full ssd drive. If you don't need all the space maybe consider a 500gb ssd. The difference is literally night and day compared to a spinning drive. For movies and large file just hook up an external hdd. There is one samsung deal going on.

The Gpu issues is a known issue by apple here in Australia, if i where you i would contact them though the chat feature on the apple Australia website. 15 and 17 inch macbook pro models from 2011 and 15 inch retina models from 2012 to early 2013 were all affected. (ive had a few repaired)
on the hybrid drives yes they are alot faster than a normal drive (more noticeable during startup) if you have a macbook pro you can fit a second hard drive in place of the dvd burner, then you can use ssd for operating system and programs while using a normal drive for movie, photo and music.

Don't waste your cash. Get a 120/240GB SSD plus an ODD to 2.5" HDD adapters and run your old hard drive where your unused DVD drive lives. Bang for buck factor = 10/10.

  • Thanks people. Have looked at setting up SSD in optical drive bay. Is it hard to do? I've been happy to tinker with my machines amd have changed HDDs before in iMac. Any tutorials you'd recommend? I know of ifixit as a good starting place for Mac mods. Any others?

Checkout link below for what you asked about. Best bang for your OB buck and faster functionality due to 7200 rpm instead of usual 5400rpm.
Bought quite a few off this dealer … no problem.
