  • Thanks TA.

Please add time limits for activating an other restrictions in the description.

    • If I knew I would. Can't find that info anywhere?

      • +1

The process does seem to have changed with this release. I couldn't find any info in the email either and I still have 7 months on my 2015 subscription so I don't want to try it. I'm sure someone will provide info.

      • DEFENDARSE?

  • Need to enter email address to get license key, I'd suggest using a disposable (temporary) email address - https://www.google.com/search?q=disposable+email+address

    • -1

What's the purpose of using a disposable email address in this case?

      • -1

        Avoid potential spam

        • +4

You don't get a key but a link back to Bitdefender to sign-in/create a user account that is tied to an email address so you can download the pre-activated installer, and that email address controls access to the operation of Bitdefender on your various devices, and you need access to that email address should you ever forget your password, surely you would want to use a real email address you control.

And if you can't trust your antivirus provider not to use your email address for bad purposes, you probably shouldn't be trusting them having direct access to all your files, email and computing/interneting habits.

@Thrift: Antivirus industry is full of shady characters. Many of us seperate as much as possible from our genuine details.
Free products often come with the condition of future marketing/promotional emails.
Personally, I use one of several semi-perm disposable emails I have.

@Utopian: The Bitdefender software, or whatever anti-virus you use, has access to your whole computer, your emails, your logins, your unencrypted internet requests - everything you do on the machine. They also send a lot of data back to their servers, such as usage reports and suspicious files and executables for scanning.

Unless you have no genuine personal information on your machine, or that you provide/access through websites, then they have to ability to see it all. All of it.

I understand using disposable emails with web services to mitigate spam, but if you have any concerns about an anti-virus software maker's behaviour, you shouldn't install their software on your machine at all.

I've used Bitdefender for years, my account has a Bitdefender-specific email address. I don't think I've had more than 5 emails from them in the past couple of years, the most recent being a product announcement for the 2016 version with a discount offer. I've never received any other email to that address.

@Thrift: People are negging my factual post. I stopped reading there.

        • @Utopian: FWIW, I haven't negged you. You haven't said anything unreasonable, just in my view not the most logical - and I'm happy to disagree on that :)

        • @Thrift:

That's right, because it's not like any large IT organisation would ever spy on you or use your private information for profit ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

        • @Adhoc: so why install their software that has complete access to your private information?

It's like telling a cleaner, "Sorry, I can't give you my phone number, I don't trust your type, you'll probably give it to telemarketers. Here's a set of keys to my house, I'm off to work to browse OzBargain for 10 hours."

        • @Thrift:
Cleaner: "I'll clean your house, go through every little bit. 6 mths for free. I'm the best, and normally charge a fair bit."

  • I haven't installed anti-virus or internet security software in many years.

    • Let's hope you don't go on a compromised website….

    • Why? Back in the day when some of the products were resource hogs I might have understood but nowadays they just sit in the background doing their thing. I cannot imagine a reason not to use one on a Windows machine.

Anti-virus is for mums and dads who don't know the difference between a compromised site/file and a safe site.
Bitdefender drives me mental too. I had some problems with my javascript files running while bitdefender was active. The only way to get around it was to uninstall it.

And frankly I am sick of the snooping by these anti-virus and anti-malware software. It's like having spyware inside of anti-spyware.

        • +1

How do you know the security situation of every site or file you deal with? The idea that security software if just for the uninformed user is absurd.

        • -7

          @Juddy:

I know because I am one of those people who can create viruses. I don't use commercial anti-virus software, but I do have other sorts of software to monitor what's being received and sent by my computer. It's only absurd to you, because you are an amateur user.

          @tendollar:

          Hardcore, son.

        • @tendollar: Whoa bro! I'm surprised those pesky IT techs haven't blocked batch scripts at your school. The opening of the cd tray must be so destructive.

  • I have been concerned about losing time on my current subscription with Bitdefender by adding a new activation code and when I did activate a new key once the time on my bitdefender on my computer did change from like 20 months to 6 months but….. If you log onto your bitdefender account online you can find a place (my memory is not fresh as to exactly where to find it) which shows all the years and keys you have used and the available time left on each one. I am not exactly sure what that means as far as the total time you have on your bit defender on your computer, whether when one ends the others step up or not but I do see that is is all tracked when you add a new key with new subscription time. Not sure how helpful that information is but thought I would share it.

[edit] I just attempted to install this one since it is 2016 and I received this message from Bitdefender central on the page where I would be installing it from:
    ACTIVATION CODE
You already have a subscription for either a superior or inferior product.

If you would like to merge these subscriptions please contact our support anytime and they will be happy to help you.
You can easily activate this subscription on your account when the existing one expires.

    • ok I checked with them and they will not add on time from the promotional codes and or combine them. When you get a new promo version your time will start over.

  • Thanks, I use the free version of bitdefender since it seems to be quite light weight, and doesn't effect me much. Interested to check out having the full for a bit, see how it compares.

  • It says Activation Code Here And On The Real Website It Just Gives A Pre-Activated Installation Pack.
Why Can't you just give the activation code instead of pre-activated installation packs??

Reason- Installation packs take such a looooooong time to install

    • Reason: They aren't using licence keys anymore.

  • I used Bit Defender, for a few years. It worked really well until last year's version, when it claimed it wasn't compatible with the version of Windows I'm using (Win.7). Even their tech support couldn't work out why it refused to install, so I had to opt for a refund and switch to another company's antivirus.

  • So I uninstalled Bitdefender 2015 and installed 2016 by following the prompts given by the link address, and my whole laptop just crashed.
When re-booting it, a black screen comes up with only the cursor visible.

Restarting Windows in safe mode, and going to the startup and services page (start —> run —-> msconfig), and then disabling all processes except for core microsoft ones enables the computer to restart properly. Just through trial and error (starting half the services, and then restarting), it is clear that Bitdefender is causing the issue.

I've left Bitdefender unchecked on startup until there is a fix, is this happening to anyone else?

    • Nope not me but I'm experiencing a different problem. I can't even download and install it lol. :)

    • Damn now you have got me scared. I was going to do just this, now not so sure. Madic74 Are you using Windows 10?

  • I feel vulnerable surfing the internet without any type of protection. :/ I probably should've tried downloading Bitdefender before my Kaspersky expired but I forgot about it because I use my Nexus 7 tablet much more than my Pc. I had Kaspersky Internet Security installed and it expired last month. I didn't want to reactivate and purchase another license key. I downloaded Kaspersky Total Security Trial version, which I've used for the past 30 days and it expired yesterday.

I'm curious about Bitdefender and want to see how it compares to Kaspersky but I'm getting this error message while trying to download/install it. I click on "install Bitdefender", choose Windows for the operating system and then click on the download button. It doesn't load and this message appears.

    504 Gateway Time-out
    nginx/1.1.19

    Anyone else having this problem?
