I'm surprised the ACCC haven't cracked down on the term "Lifetime" by now.

  • Yeah, lifetime of the product. That said we bought our current GPS 3-4 years ago and the map updates are still coming through. It was a big incentive for us to upgrade from our previous GPS.

HOW they still sell these things has me stuffed.

Surely most, if not every single smart phone/device has built in navigation apps nowadays that are constantly updated, such as Google Maps etc… Samsung Navigator etc.

What am I missing by not having one of these over an Android phone/tablet with GPS built in?

    • +1! I'm wondering the same too

Some people just like having a dedicated device?

      • Just like some people who prefer to have a physical book instead of an e-book!

My parents are the same. Have yet to convince them to convert to smart phone + GPS and e-books. I got an Apple iPhone 5 a while back, running GPS and e-books. Works great way more convenient than stand alone GPS. Especialy when paired to a bluetooth car head unit and offline maps.

I also have a working first generation 4.3" Tomtom from 2006 that can still get maps and camera updates for it.

Well for one it's illegal, in Vic at least, to touch your smartphone whilst driving… but not a dedicated SatNav device. That's a big one for me!

Plus a few years ago when I tried using my (then) iPhone 5 for navigation it kept overheating above the dash in the sun! Never had that problem with my SatNav.

    1. Do not have to pay data charges (if not downloaded maps) on phone
    2. Live traffic and speed camera fixed and patrolled + red light camera features
      have saved me many times.
    3. Correct lane direction is another helping hand….I was in Melbourne recently
      On unfamiliar roads.
      1. Advanced lane guidance. When using my iPhone, I lost count the number of times I entered the wrong lane when driving in unfamilar roads for the first time. Never ever have that issue on a TomTom.
      2. Not really a biggie but Apple and Google already know all my friends contacts, what I search for, where I visit online, see my emails, all the photos I upload, what music I listen to… I don't want to add "where I drive every day" to big brother <tinfoil hat on>
      3. Alot of the cheap/inbuilt map apps on mobile devices are slow or crap compared to dedicated units. If you can recommend a good app that's on par with TomTom, that'd be good, and before you say Google Maps… PLEASE NO! G Maps is excellent for top-down/address research, but it is nowhere near as good as TomTom at address guidance.
      4. GPS lock on standalone units are usually much faster than phones.
  • i m surprised, what's the bargain here….it's at a same price on JB HIFI…

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/gps-car-audio/tomtom/tomtom-go510-…

  • after two years, the new Tomtom's software still worst than older version.

    • The UX is now SO much better IMO, and through software updates TomTom have added a lot of the expected features back in… what are they still missing? (Besides being able to update the maps, um, manually!)

  • life time maps and upgrade sounds good.
    but at $214, It's a bit much.

  • Also same price at JB Hifi - 20% off the entire range

The 5100 i a better buy with lifetime data included with the built in sim card
