DM's: ($68.95 delivery offer, but considering i can't find a free delivery code, im quoting the instore price)
An elegant sophisticated Speyside with the most complex aroma of any malt. Astonishingly fragrant with sweetish notes and a smoky saltiness on the finish. Complexity married to such refinement is not easily found.

Personally its quite a mild flavored but subtly complex whisky. A good one to have in your collection of Speyside whiskys.

"the most complex aroma of any malt" might be a bit of an exaggeration. But its certainly a solid Speysider, going for a good price. Unlike all the peaty Islay malts that seem to get posted a lot, I would recommend this one to anyone new to single malts.

Agree. I don't detect any smokey saltiness but it has a honey note typical of Speyside whiskies. An easy and laid back dram.

So this whisky was made the same year that Saddam Hussein was captured and Lance Armstrong won his fifth Tour De France!!!

Thank you historian JV, this might just have become a collectible now.

    • How the mighties have fallen! Wouldn't that be an cause for a little celebration? I'll drink to that.

Whiskies don't age in the bottle.. so if the bottle has been sitting around in a warehouse for a while it could have been distilled even earlier.

But assuming it was bottled this year, the youngest whisky in the mix could have come out of a still as Saddam was being captured, then been put in a barrel and aged for 12 years (distilling it was only part of the process of making whisky - when the newmake went into the barrel it would have been a lot stronger, looked completely clear and tasted very different).

But that would have been only the "youngest" whisky in the bottle.

A distillery is constantly distilling mash and putting it away to age, so at any point the people at Cragganmore have a bunch of different aged spirits sitting in various barrels (which used to hold bourbon or sherry). A master blender at the distillery then takes a bunch of different malts and figures out which ones to blend and in what proportion, to produce a consistent product with a particular flavour profile that he can sell at a certain price. By law the age statement on the bottle has to state the age of the youngest component that went into the mix. So some of the components in a 12 year old whisky could be 30 years old for all we know.

      jv, you've done it again!

  • in b4 Dan Murphys reduces price

  • been waiting for this to go on sale,…thanks!

  • Bought this when DM had it on special about 2 months ago.
I'm a fan of Speyside's - sweeter which is my preference over Islay's, peatier and smokier.
A great drop, worth every dollar!! great way to appreciate subtleties of a good single malt. add a few drops of distilled or filtered water to open up the taste and remove a bit of the ethanol/burn..

  • Unfortunately Cragganmore 12Yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700mL is no longer available.

  • just back from overseas trip, stocked up some 1L Laphaig varieties for less than $90 a bottle average, missed the Talisker 20% off sale though, otherwise it'll be $80/1L for the dark storm maybe less for others.

  • Checking the Dan Murphy's site today, some 2 days later and they still haven't price matched/beaten it. That's unusual.

    • no stock at FC, no need to match it
