PSN - terrible?

Hi all,

First time PS4 gamer here. Since buying my first PS4 I've had nothing but problems with PSN.

Problem 1: My PS4 can't connect (ISP is iiNet) / just says 'Please wait' for an infinite period.

Solution: Reset/reboot everything. No fix. Hotspot onto Telstra 4G - works ok, have logged in and set up account.

Problem 2: Terrible download speeds

Solution: None yet - Literally download at about 80kb/s or worse. Trying to download Rocket League has so far taken some 9 hours for around 1 GB downloaded, and 60+ hours to go

I've switched DNS to Google DNS as one workaround - marginal gains at best there.

I understand if there's maintenance/server outrages but PSN status network is fully green without issue.

Just unlucky? I fear trying to play anything online will be a worse experience and that's half the fun!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Should've got neither. You'll be playing just as many games.

  • the google dns worked for me to help download speeds if that alone doesn't work change MTU to 1473 or 1450

Can't help on the first problem ive never had that.

rocket league is an awesome game btw ive played it heaps.

    • I'll take a look at the MTU - thanks.

      • Another thing to try is put your ls4 into rest mode this should allow it to download faster as we already know Sony caps the download speed when its turned on.

        • Ok, thanks!

The network card in the PS4 is 2.4GHz but I don't have an issues with it since I can download at max speeds on my connection.

It's most likely your wifi - get a better router or use ethernet.

    • can confirm ethernet is way to go, I tested both at my place and much more solid and faster connection with cable.

    • Ethernet is an interesting one - I use multiple devices across my house in lower wifi spots and it doesn't seem to be 'slow'. Gotta try everything though.

    • Agreed PS4 + Wifi = nightmare
      PS4 + ethernet = Sweet dreams

Try Ethernet. Then you know if it's your Wi-Fi.

I don't know if this'll help you, but I've had the PS4 connected via Wifi before and now on Ethernet. Ethernet is definitely faster but I connected at pretty decent speeds on wireless. The download speeds even on wireless were pretty acceptable.

Good luck and hope you find a solution

  • works fine with mine

  • I've never had this problem though seen people get it on PS3 as well as PS4. I think it must be something in your network settings. Even when I reset my router to factory settings it still works great.

Sounds more like a internet issue as opposed to the PS4 itself, maybe a router/modem configuration?

    • I'm pretty capable at using my Internet connection in a hardcore way - Netflix, streaming, video etc etc. All works ok (although iiNet is reasonably congested at times)

      • Look at what ports the PSN are using on your Modem and maybe designate them or something.

      • Also ask your ISP to do a packet loss test to the PSN servers, it could be a port problem on their end.

  • Had a similar issue with my PS3. check the gateway the PS4 sets when it connects to your router.

  • i run my ps3 and ps4 off an old 54g router, never had an issue except its so much slower than my xboxes off the same router… eh. sony doesnt run a good a network as microsoft, i accept that
