Replacment key for Hyundai Getz

Hi There

Bought a 2010 Hyundai Getz yesterday and it only came with one key. I rang hyundai and they quoted $380 for a new key (with buttons) and $110 to make it work with the car. So $490 for a key.

I've been googling and there doesn't seem to be an alternative. I asked the Mister Minute man and he said he can only do the ones without the button ($140) - but from what I've read it may not even start the car as Hyudnai seem to have to do something special to make the keys work.

Thanks

Get 2 buttonless keys made. Stick the key with buttons/fob under your dash. Buy the blanks from eBay.

Don't forget to tell us where you park your car.

you still lock the car manually with the fobless key.

and unlock with a coat hanger

        • Which probably means the alarm and immobiliser aren't armed I assume?

  • Negotiate on the price for the key and making it work with the car with the dealer. Ask them what they can do so that you feel good about your new car purchase.

Alternatively negotiate with another dealer with the carrot that you'll get a tow bar or paint protection or get your car serviced there once free servicing finishes.

    Id suggest a replacement car!

But seriously, Get in contact with ebay sellers - the FOB units are only worth about $2 - you will have to fork out for the coding but dont pay ridiculous price for the actual unit….like pulled beef, its a scam!

    Heres one for $42 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HYUNDAI-GETZ-BLANK-TRANSPONDER-KE…

And in future, when buying from a dealer, always ask if it has 2 keys. If not , they will include an extra one at no cost

    • I'm selling a Getz for ten times the amount, and it comes with two keys!

        • Sorry, it was a bit pointless. But it shows the relative cost of the keys in relation to the entire value of the vehicle. Shouldn't really be more than $100, even with the fancy transponder.

  • I was in a similar position when I purchased a second hand car and have just never bought a second key. But it has made me paranoid enough that I've never misplaced my one true key. I have it on a fluro keyring and just put it in the same spot.

May not be as useful if you share the car with another person

You could get a key finder gizmo like Tile. Only updates location in range of your phone so not guaranteed, but could help you not misplace them.

  • Locksmiths that can do car keys are much cheaper than having a new one made up from the dealer. As Cheap Charlie said. Find one that can scan and reprogram a new blank key for you from your existing working key.

  • Thanks everyone. Rung around Lockmisths and the cheapest is $360. So will go for that. Thank you!!
