iPad Mini Cellular - Make and Receive Phone Calls or Text??

as in iPhone is a bit too expensive for me, I'm just wondering if I can purchase a iPad Mini with Cellular as a phone which is just 50% of the iPhone?

I knew Optus got a app that can Make and Receive Phone Calls or Text over Wifi and Data, which sounds working for me??

Anyone got Optus service and iPad Cellular can check it for me please?

and are there any apps for Telstra can work as well??

Get a cheaper iphone? or https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214685

You can use an app like Mysms for texting.

You'd rather carry an ipad mini around for years instead of getting a phone because the iphone is too expensive?

What happens if you don't have a bag with you? Would you just hold it in your hand the whole time?

    • I mean it's cheaper to use tablet than phone, you can also get a Cellular Android Tablet ~$200.

So are there any apps can RECEIVE calls and texts except the Optus WiFi Talk? There are plenty of sending out ones but I couldn't find any for receiving…

      • The way you phrase the OP is that you want to use a ipad and use it as a phone as the iphone is too expensive. You do know there are phones cheaper than $200….

Ignore the Mysms suggestion as you'd need a phone for that.

So are there any apps can RECEIVE calls and texts except the Optus WiFi Talk?

None of that I am aware.

      • You could run Skype and get a Skype number.

        http://www.skype.com/en/features/online-number/

        • Nah, that's different… It's not a mobile number and couldn't send and receive sms

      • Google Voice > USA local number
        *VPN signup_free universal num.
        *cellular/Wi-Fi: multiplatform
        *CLID Works +rcvd Skype's CLID
        *voice,text to US+Canada $nil-
        *register family on platform
        *rec/transcribe/gmail integr.

        • I need Australia Number

It only texts wth a paired iphone as far as I can tell.

Nah, the Optus WiFi Talk app doesn't need to paired iPhone

but anyone can test it before I purchase the iPad?

  • As I see it, you should be able to use a softphone Voip app like http://www.3cx.com/voip/sip-phone/
and an account with a local SIP provider http://voipchoice.com.au/compare-voip-plans-residential/

That would give you a cheap local number and allow making and receiving calls and supposedly instant messaging — this system works from Windows desktop, Android and iOS devices.

  • Tbh I would forget a Wi-Fi apps and just get on the strongest cellular in most Australia zones, network.
Telstra actually has become a lot more impressive value since September. This new cap 40/$750 freedom plus, is where Vodafone (cap 40 $750) was, recently 2 months ago?

What? Half of my contacts are Telstra already. — i suppose those 680 call minutes, might as well be considered 1300 mins; approaching unlimited.
And, those in the know know, the 25c txt/bounced Cm2UU>> 10.00) exchanges to ~9.1mins to AU/IDD US-or 28 txt sent either country, +top up 1.000 GB.

In the end, Hangouts / Skype / etc are the world class apps to correct or fill in fo black spots/poor cellular. Voip & T, best of both worlds.
