Aldi's 50" TV broke its stand and fell on the ground

Ok I have an old Aldi 50" TV. Its about 2.5 yrs old, only 2 yr warranty. Its 25kg+ thing.

I heard a massive bang and went into the room where the TV was. The TV was on the floor, it snapped at the neck. The room had all the windows closed so no wind could have blown it over. My kid was using the PC in the same room but she was in the kitchen getting a drink.

TV is borked, was working fine. I'm not sure how to go about this. I'm not sure they will care since its out of warranty and was working fine up to this point and yet I wouldnt be happy if it fell on my kid.

Do you think Aldis or Fair Trading would care?

The warranty has expired and it's time to get a new tv.

    Bauhn tv from aldi

Dont buy one they are dangerous. Ours cracked off the stand and landed on the floor in the middle of the night. Imagine the accident that could have happened if a toddler was running around at the time. The tv is ruined of course as it hit th concrete floor. The plastic stand sheared off and the tv was only purchased 3 months ago. My partner paid cash when he bought the tv. Now we are trying to find receipt which to me is irrelevant as these tvs are aldi tvs and need to be recalled. Money should be refunded regardless of a receipt.
    - Dangerous. Plastic stand unsafe. These tvs need to be recalled before someone gets hurt.

    No

The tv stand was fine for 2.5 years and all of a sudden broke without anything touching it?

I highly doubt you'd get a replacement or refund.

I think you would have a good chance of getting something from them because (a) their liability due to the fact that this seems to have been a known issue, and (b) due to the fact that the do not want their rep ruined through possible media attention and reporting, and (c) they might not want this to be on record with Fair Trading etc.
In case you do not get anywhere in Australia I suggest writing a letter to their HQ in Germany - they will reply as things like that are taken very seriously in Germany where Aldi prides itself for its high and safe quality of the products they sell.

      Just like Volkswagen does ?

      • If VW made TV's they would work in the Showroom and self-destruct when you plug your own Aerial in.

        • So, because the emission are higher it makes VW a bad car. Pffft.

Do you really think they are the only one doing this? Some of the US manufacturers had faults resulting in hundreds of death (cars exploding etc.) - the VW has not killed anybody.

But also, if a stand breaks after two and half years, it is also not fit for purpose in my book and probably under Australian Consumer Law.

I reckon you have a good chance of getting it replaced (including the TV). You just need to be persistent as in Australia the first answer when you assert your rights is NO.
If you are persistent more often than not you will succeed. If you go away, then they have won and their strategy has worked.

Well, the NY Times article on VW did cover that…

          @Lysander:
There was a problem a while back of VW's motor stopping without warning… there were fatalities from that.
No car is perfect, far from it. Choose what you like and enjoy it. :-)

Scary shit. Since hearing about this last year, my personal choice was to never to buy a VW.

But it's also opened my eyes to the fact that companies get away with this stuff all the time and don't issue product recalls, or they do dodgy repair jobs to cover it up.

I know of the Samsung washing machine that spontaneously catches fire (http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/samsung-recall-washing-machines-fi…), and the recent news about those Takata airbags that caused so much damage to a driver that police initially treated the incident as a homicide (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/21/business/it-looked-like-a-…)…

        • @brotherrfranciz: The thing with the samsung washers is that they put the recall on the news on TV, the radio, in the paper, on their website, on facebook and on twitter and yet still people didn't organise the repairs.

  • Contents insurance perhaps? Lucky no kids or pets were injured…could of been a disaster

    let consumer affairs know.
u may not get a refund but aldi could be forced to recall all their tvs for safety reasons.

i have had had bad experiences with aldi tvs and dick smith brand tvs and would never touch them again.

    • Can vouch for DSE TV's being rubbish.. :-(
You can get reasonable quality for a fair price but need to do some looking.

  • On the plus side, if u r ready to replace, maybe check out the good guys ebay 20% deal combined with TAs Cash rewards 4% codes…should get a decent replacement there id thnk

ignore the promoted 2yr warranty.. instead go by 2011 Aus. Consumer Law.
TV should have lasted a 'reasonable' amount of time.

i don't feel the onus should be on you to prove it just snapped.. and anyway.. even if it was the wind or a kid bumping it.. it should be designed to withstand small bumps or breeze.

    i would definitely ask them.
aldi are typically pretty good with returns i've found.

  • Go and talk to Aldi they are usually pretty good.

Get a refund or credit or something and in the meantime buy a decent tv from TGG on eBay.

  • For me, TV should last at least 5 years. I presume its reasonable period of time. Sorry if I'm expecting too much. This should be covered under ACL if not under ALDI's warranty I reckon.

  • Ask them for a refund. That could have killed your kid or your dog. If it had been under warranty, would their warranty have covered your pets death?
