Xbox Controller for PC - Best Price/What to Look for?

Hi all,

Looking at purchasing an Xbox controller for PC & wondering if can I get away with only spending ~$20 for one as opposed to ~$60, and what's the difference between the two?

Not too sure what to look for so any advice would be appreciated.

Banggood: $14

eBay: $25

PC Case Gear: $60

Cheers!

Banggood and eBay one both looks like they are controllers that look like official XBOX-360 controller, not the official one from how they word their product.

Check EB games around you, I bought mine, second hand one, for 6 bucks.

    • A year later, its $18…. god damn it

      • Dude… thread is from October 2015

Xbox controller WIRED version $25 AUD

While you can get yum-cha-generic chinese ones for slightly less… why would you? The real deal is pretty cheap.

Also when plugging into a computer the genuine xbox controller drivers auto-install on any Windows PC, and does not require any remapping of buttons. The Xbox Guide button also invokes Big Picture Mode on Steam and it also brings up the Game Bar on windows 10.

Any games that natively support xbox controllers will also show in-game prompts that are user friendly and not just generic joypad button names.

For example, with a XBOX controller you'll get this prompt:Press X to reload
But when you have a generic controller you'll see: Press BTN5 to reload and you'll have to work out which is Button 5 on your controller.

  • Thanks guys - will check EB Games tomorrow and if not I'll buy from one of those sites.

Also this might be a stupid question - if I ever end up getting an Xbox, will the controller work with it or is it PC only?

    • Controller will work on both pc and xbox.

Try gumtree if you want a wireless one - will jag one for $10-$25 depending on condition ….its easy to replace the thumbsticks to for a few $$ too.

You'll also need a usb dongle for wireless, a few $$ from ebay, just get a generic one, makes no diff.

I needed a extra controller once…i ended up paying $50 for an xbox with 3 controllers and 15 games from a guy 5 min drive from me! Sold Everything else i didnt need for a tidy profit.

Will you be buying AC Syndicate Ezio?

  • Will keep a look out, thanks.

Truth be told I haven't made it much past Revelations. Decided to read the books before getting in to the latest games since I found AC3 pretty average. Time is of the essence though, and fortunately the longer this goes on the cheaper the games get :)

Edit: Sorry, meant to reply to your comment. Still getting used to this haha

How soon do you need it? If you can wait till December you'll likely get one for under $10 after cashback

    • Not too bothered with time, those cheaper sites usually take forever to ship anyway.

Can you use a PS3 controller on your PC the same way you would an Xbox one (ie with a usb dongle?)

      • Wasn't the cheaper sites I was referring to, was Microsoft cashback

      • Yes you can… by connecting it with a mini USB cable. I hear you can also connect via Bluetooth although I couldn't get that to work. Apparently, only a limited number of bluetooth adapters are supported. A quick Google search should get you started.

From personal experience, current-gen console controllers (PS4 and Xbox One) are better than their predecessors. While the XB1 controller has a more reasonable D-pad, it's joystick is sadly not as durable as the ones on the XB360 controller. Google "joystick drifting on XB1 controller" and you"ll see what I mean. There's a M$-certified XB1 mini controller that's cheaper than the official one. It didn't do me any good though. YMMV
