Current Handsets supported:

N97 Mini
5800 XpressMusic / Navigation Edition
E52
E55
E72
5230
6710 navigator,
6730 classic
X6

Upcoming:

N900 and N97 (Keep an eye on the Nokia Maps site — expected release date for N97 is Jan 28)

To take advantage of the free Navigation now, simply hit the download link and then use Nokia Maps Updater to update your Ovi Maps to the latest version.

You can pre-load road maps and guidance voices to your device by using Nokia Maps Loader. Preloading maps lets you browse your maps without incurring data usage charges (highly recommended unless you have a very large data plan).

If your handset is not supported, don't fret — Nokia may soon add updates to earlier S60 handsets.

News:

After March 2010, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will come installed with the new Ovi Maps application and pre-loaded with local country map data and walk and drive navigation with access to location-aware Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost. Additional premium guides like a weather service and events / movies are also included.

mod - Just a note for those new to the navigator. Some features make use of the Internet. Avoid excess data charges by turning off various settings and avoiding some features

  • cool i guess, too bad about the wait til the 28th…. kind of prefer garminXT on my n97 tho

  • damm no 3120 classic…

  • Awesome :)

Was just considering it for my 5800, that I got from another bargain here :P

Now I just want a deal for 32 GB micro SD cards … :)

Ideally someone in Doncaster who takes Westfield vouchers … Dick Smith? :P

  • Smart move by Nokia.

  • Wishlist

Other apps that would be great for Nokia to release, to compete with the iPhone:
    - Office (eg Quick Office :P ) … with a refund or accessories to me for suggesting it ;) / buying office already
    - Adobe PDF reader. I can't believe the Ovi store shows a $16.00 PDF reader as the only option! :P (I did find one for $2-$3 but still)
    - Paint
    - Piano (for a bit of fun :) )
    - Guitar so we can get great use out of the plectrums for our 5800s :P

    • Office (eg Quick Office :P ) … with a refund or accessories to me for suggesting it ;) / buying office already

Office comes free on the E-series of nokia handsets. So if you have an E63 / 71 / 72 / 75 you should already have Quick Office installed (with an option to upgrade to the latest version) as well as Adobe Reader LE installed.

      Adobe PDF reader.

You can read PDF's using google docs. Just upload the PDF's into your gmail account, they will become viewable as plain text. Just sign into gmail using your favorite browser, or just use the gmail symbian app.

      Paint

Quick google search reveals that there is already a simple paint app for the Nokia 5800.

      • My N95 has a pdf reader..

      • Ah no, I have a 5800 :)

Office readers are supposed to be available for free, but I just grabbed the full version's trial instead, found it really good, then found an offer for 1/2 price. :)

Ah, I haven't used Google Docs before.

Thank you! :) I've been a bit wary of downloading from sites which don't seem to be Nokia, so I've been looking through the Ovi Store only (then going to vendor sites after seeing an app). But the first Google link that you gave me, linked to Forum Nokia with a demonstration paint app that saves etc :) http://mowser.com/web/http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nok… so I'm going to try that out :)

Does anyone know if this should be safe? :) I'm a complete newbie to the S60 world and which sites to trust. (I'm currently trusting Nokia, Forum-Nokia, and sites for the developers of apps on Ovi)

  • Welcome to 2010 Nokia :)

    • Thanks to Nokia's new offer you can finally wave goodbye to expensive Tom Tom and GarminXT symbian apps.

Imagine the horrified look on the Tom Tom and Garmin CEO's faces when they read this news… hah!

      • the nokia maps leave something to be desired for countries outside europe/north america/australia. garmin has a really nice function for adding lots of 3rd party maps

  • +1

    sad, can't do in E71….

    • +1

I too own an E71. I'm pissed off considering the fact that the E71 is (or was) Nokia's flagship E series mobile phone and they've chosen to neglect it from this new offer.

But my predictions are that Nokia will eventually extend this to all GPS equipped phones. It makes no sense to only provide free GPS navigation to the upper end of the market while making your lower end consumers pay for a free feature that is already common on Android phones.

  • this could be the best deal ever!

    normally $100 a year.. $100 x forever….

    you rock nokia!

    • $100 a year? I thought it was $5 a year or you could buy someone else's software to install for $40. (I haven't looked into it too much though, at this stage)

      • +1

$97.99 to be exact, that's how much it costs from the Nokia Maps license store.

      • There's an ebay seller (Melbourne based) listing compatible s/w for $21.98, 2010 MOBILE XT GPS NAVIGATOR 27 countries, but since now Nokia is upgrading the 5800 for free, another freebie! (On top of the gift voucher I had on the purchase of the 5800) :)

  • Anyone know how to browse through the planned route waypoints, so we can check out the route it wants us to follow, before we start driving?

(In case we don't like the route etc)

I've tried clicking on the map to skip ahead, flicking left or right goes to a different screen. Flicking forwards and back doesn't seem to do the trick …

    • Look for any option that says 'flyover'.

      • Found the solution. Flick the screen to the right, till there's a solid sidebar. Then click on the arrows to jump through the different turns and round abouts.

  • Wish my N95 8gb was supported! I love having a phone and a gps in 1 :)

  • Great news!

The n900 just has a firmware release to speed up Ovi Maps app. But the Ovi Suite still can't support the N900! Just silly. And the lack of multitouch really hampers the phone.

Now to wait for this to be free for the N900 and 6700 Classic!

  • MMMM… gave it a + for the post…
    Anyone else having problems with Windows 7 - not supported :{
Almost well done Nokia - guess gotta use other p.c. with %$^*#(&% vista ….

    • My Win 7 works OK with Ovi Maps..
      32bit.. Haven't tried it on my 64bit

      • I'm running 64 bit Win 7 - no problems with Nokia software so far

  • Just downloaded the map to my E52, will let you know how it goes! cheers!

    • it downloaded the Chinese map, I supposed because I bought the phone in China. Is there an option to change that?

      • Could try the "Nokia Maps Updater"

If you want, first remove the map of China
        Then select
        - the map of Australia (I think it's under Oceania)
        - one of the voices
        Then download

Note: you can have as many maps and voices as you have space for on your memory card. I'm not sure about the Ovi maps, but the previous Nokia maps also needed the memory card (or wherever the maps were) to have some empty space too, in order to be usable.

  • mmmm -interesting… well might be dat??? - I on 64bit….

    • Works absolutely fine here, Windows 7 x64.

    • I use Firefox.. try that..

  • Dammit really want this for my N85!

  • Has anyone worked out how to use contacts with Ovi maps?

With Nokia maps I could search for an address, then select from options that I want to look up one of my contacts, but this seems to be gone from the current version of Ovi maps.

Hoping they'll soon add that into Ovi maps.

In case Nokia's people read this, I'd also the Ovi maps to work with SMS. (Take my position, sms it to my friend, my friend receives Ovi Maps SMS and can add the position to Ovi Maps)

  • waiting for my N96

  • Hey guys, I have the 6110 navigator, any chance if that will be included in the future?

    thanks

    • Route 66 Navigation is provided free and should be enough unless you want new maps.

  • +1

For those even newer than I am, to the navigation, beware that some features make use of the internet. Check your settings and make sure you know which features use the internet, in order to minimize your data charges.

eg one of the types of navigation (is it Assisted GPS?) talks to internet servers to try and calculate your position, faster

    • +1

It is Assisted GPS (A-GPS) that uses data to obtain up to date satellite info. It is generally only a few kilobytes. Either leave A-GPS off, or if do you want faster GPS lock on, set it to contact the server periodically. The data downloaded is valid for about a week. Not sure if Nokia have an option for periodic connection to server but my samsung does.

      • Sharing your location, under Ovi Maps, tries to connect to the internet.

When you try using walk for the first time, it will want to connect to the internet.

Weather, Events and Lonely Planet - all from the Internet

If you haven't downloaded any maps or voices, I'm not sure if drive will want to connect to the internet.

I think, but am unsure, whether continuous map upgrading uses the Internet. I think traffic info will use satellites but am not 100% sure.

        • +1

Live traffic uses data, but only very small amounts.

  • In downloading says other maps I downloaded map updater NO maps is N95 not included ?

    • If you are having problems obtaining the new version of Ovi Maps,
Open the following link in your N95's web browser:

      www.nokia.mobi/maps/dl

      Install the application.
Once installed, reboot your phone (if required).

To get the latest maps, you must connect your phone to your PC via USB (Bluetooth is fine, but USB has faster transfer speeds).

Now run Nokia Ovi Suite 2 — if you don't have it installed, do so now.

Run Ovi Suite 2 — then at the top of the window, click View => Maps.
From there on you should be able to preload maps onto your N95 device

Unfortunately you'll still need to pay for Navigation at this stage (refer to deal description to see list of supported handsets).
If this is the first time you've used turn by turn GPS navigation, you are entitled to a 7 day free trial.

  • So NO N95 maps ?

    • Maps exist. But no free turn-by-turn navigation. That's all.

You can still browse the maps, track your current position, look for landmarks, add favorites etc.

Free navigation feature will be added soon, just be patient :)

  • Saw download link now on n95 Aust NZ no free trial just charges So N95 no free Maps

  • Thanks for posting this Scrimshaw. I downloaded it to my E71 and it worked initially but then when about to tell me the turn-by-turn instructions it prompts me with a message asking me to go online and connect to the online shop. It doesn't let me do anything after that? Do you know why this is happening? Wouldn't let me connect from a wi-fi or wireless connection.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

  • Just now spoke to one of Nokia Consultants…Maps are just free..we still need to pay for the turn-by-turn navigation it seems…its alll marketing :(

    • They're wrong, simply.

    • I got the maps and navigation for free :) (Nokia 5800) Which phone do you have?

Still getting the hang of Ovi maps, though.

I've worked out how to save places, retrieve them, set up routes (note, only one way works well), save and fetch routes …

I still haven't seen that it can work with contacts though or that it's possible to set up a route that doesn't start whereever you are. (Anyone know how to do these, if they are possible?)
